  • RAILROAD SHOO-FLY UPDATE! Train goes over train! A giant CSX train with 2 mid train DPUs working hard goes under a Norfolk Southern train in Kentucky. Both trains had 2 DPUs in the middle of the train and working hard. The NS train was flying over the CSX train. First we see the progress on the railroad overpass being constructed in Richwood, Kentucky. The temporary railroad track around the construction zone ( shoo-fly ) is still in use. Notice the permanent right of way being constructed next to it. We see the the shoo-fly from both ends and both sides right in the middle. I also filmed a train going around the shoo-fly. It won't be long until the permanent track is put back into place and trains will be going over the new bridge. I also show the permanent right of way being constructed for the industrial spur that serves 2 customers. I show both abandoned railroad crossings also. After that I went a couple miles south of the shoo-fly where the CSX line goes under the Norfolk Southern line. I heard a CSX manifest approaching on 161.370 and the Norfolk Southern line on 160.950 was very slow today. A huge CSX train with 2 mid train DPUs was going from Cincinnati to Louisville, Kentucky. While I was filming that train a Norfolk Southern manifest with 2 mid train DPUs passed over the CSX train! That was pure luck! It was cold with the temperatures maxing out around 25 degrees Fahrenheit. The cold temperatures along with the wind coming off of the CSX train was pretty hard on my camera battery and the battery finally gave out just before the end of the NS train. There might have been another 20 cars but at least I got all of the locomotives. CSX runs about 7 or 8 trains every 24 hours through here and NS has about double that. This CSX line is the same one that runs through the street running track in LaGrange, Kentucky. I have a lot of videos of trains in LaGrange in my playlist called Street Running Trains. The main purpose of this video is to show the progress on the railroad overpass. They put fencing up on the bridge which is not great for photography. On this day, the tracks were not very busy and I had to wait close to 3 hours for a train. The over and under shot was a lucky catch. What do you think about the progress and leave a comment about the over and under shot. I also filmed Norfie and Chessie on the same day and don't forget to watch my world famous slide show at the end! The train going between buildings and dropping the signal at the end is for a future video that I am working on from Muncie, Indiana. Shoo-fly and over/under shots all filmed December 7, 2021.

You know the odds of catching twin DPU's passing over twin DPU's. Wow what a shot.
Plus on top of a trestle.
Definitely twin stacks want fit under that sucker
That was a tight fit down that embankment.
This is gotta rate in the top 5 videos you've captured.
    Way to go. Take care.

Bunch of BN grainers in the shoo-fly train, too, though those are still pretty common. The railroad names on the autoracks are somewhat irrelevant, since the cars are nearly all owned by TTX. I don't know why they even put railroad names on them. They don't with the Railbox cars, for example.

It looks like they mihgt have the tracks over the new bridge in place and in operation soon. Nice! I know many people don't think about tracks being relocated because they are so much a permanent fixture. But moving them is done in such a way that even the most observant folks won't realize it happened. I grew up near the Chrysler stamping plant in Warren, Mich. they had a huge pedestal water tower on one side of the track and the plant on the other. It was the town's landmark, but it disappeared one day during the summer and the track were relocated over that space. Found out years later, the reason the tower was removed was it was unused and the angle of the track was off to the entry of the plant for drop off of chassis in the assembly plant ne3xt door to the stamping plant. (I know, confusing a little), but after the track were relocated the trains could then drive thru the back end of the plant and drop chassis on the newly moved tracks, then realigning them back to the main line. fascinating stuff, thanks for the video!

Markus, your absolutely right, in my forty years operating an engine I’ve seen plenty and even had undercutting of the right of way under bridge superstructures, lots of scenarios…..they’ll swing that right of way over and a temporary speed restriction for the first train or two and then it will be like the sho-fly never existed…..I don’t see the switch installation being an issue….ok, good update Brian so let us know how Purina is coming along we have to keep you busy, happy holidays and your list for when you return from Florida is going to be pretty big…..rest up…..I’m headed over to yt channel “jackmp294.5” and hunt for some “uboats”…..take care all…..Mike5203

Hello from the UK. What a great catch that was to see the two trains together. That must have been your reward for standing out in the freezing weather all of that time. All in all that was a lot of rail freight that shifted by the three trains. When I lived in Neath, South Wales a couple of decades ago, my cat Harry brought me a small mole that he had disembowelled and left it (just like a present) on my back step outside the kitchen door! I'm afraid cats are hunters by nature, and that was just one of the grisly things he thought I might like as gifts that he brought back to the house over his eight year life span! My other cat used to like catching Slow Worms (Snake-like legless Lizards common in our area). He would bite them into two or three inch sections and leave them all over the house. We soon put a stop to that, and Tigger eventually stopped his homicidal gifts.

BTW, it’s her natural instinct to hunt/catch. If she will be an outside cat, a collar could catch on a fence or anything and strangle her. Cats are predators, inside is best for wildlife!! Her as well, saves her from dogs, owls, hawks, coyotes who see her a tasty meal, plus winter isn’t kind to outside domesticated animals!

Our outside cats have "breakaway" collars. If they get hung up, cat tugs away from whatever collar got snagged on and pops open, no harm to the cat at all.
Now finding the lost breakaway collar, that's another matter all together! LOL
But I agree, inside is best for most cats, however, there are those that flat refuse to be inside only cats. I have quite a few of those.
But I did train mine not to kill birds or squirrels. Snakes, rats, mice are fair game though.

Might be a good idea to at least try to make Norfie a house cat as it'd be better for both her and the local wildlife though that's in her nature to hunt. We had a shop cat at my former employer for the first 10 years I was there and ol Puff would bring back all sorts of critters he caught to show off his hunting prowess.
Funniest was our receptionist keeps hearing this thunk thunk thunk noise of something bouncing off the sliding glass door near her desk, after a few more thunks curiosity gets the best of her and she looks to see Puff with the mouse he'd caught pick up the mouse in his mouth by the tail and then flinging the mouse against the window and then doing the same until one of us went out to acknowledge his skill as the hunter supreme with ear skritches.

I never have seen those tall gondolas with covers on them before (so stuff doesn't spill out). That's a good thing! BTW, your cat is just doing what's in her/his nature. Chipmunks can cause damage to your home (and they make that annoying noise, LOL)! Vermin are the reason God put cats on Earth, to keep our homes safe and healthy. I don't like it when the cats kill birds, but for cats, it is a way for them to keep fit and active. It keeps their hunting skills sharpened. Your cat will also go after spiders or other vermin in your house, this is all in their nature. Happy New Year to you, Mrs. Tooth and the whole Family! God Bless!

I didn’t measure his speed but it seems to me that the train at the beginning of the video rolls faster than we usually see. Maybe the track that has been built recently allows higher speed. The great works you make us discover and explain will improve the safety of accident theater places in the past. Removing railroad crossings is always a good thing.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 Před 2 lety

From the time the locomotives took to pass a fixed point, it was doing about 45mph. Not an unusual speed and any benefits of brand-new track is offset by the tight curve of the shoo-fly, which probably can't be superelevated because it's a pair of short s-curves.

You were lucky to catch both trains at the bridge. I was lucky to see that happen as well a couple of years ago in the same spot. BTW the siding that was taken out near the shoofly was for a small coal yard that was by the tracks. They had lump coal and sold it to people who heated with coal. If I remember correctly they brought it in on gondolas. In later years it was used to set off a defective car if needed.

Nice video Brian, it was cool to see those two trains at the same time and the CSX train had some interesting cars in it. Like others were saying, get a breakaway collar with a bell for Norfie, or else keep her inside. Do you have a decent model train layout? You should show it to us in a video sometime.
