The late 80’s and early 90’s were kind of weird time for US Army doctrine, where the Machine-Gunner and Auto-Rifleman were essentially the same role besides the difference in ammunition they carry. Since then, they have become distinctly different roles.
What's interesting is that Ewan Bremner, who played Nelson, was partially deafened while filming the scene with Tom Hardy as Twombly. The real Nelson was also deafened during the real firefight but I can't remember if he really was partnered with Twombly while separated from the other Rangers.

In the movie Blackhawk Down, that "strobe unit" wasn't accurate. the Delta and Rangers had portable IR strobes attached to their gear and the little birds lit up anyone not strobing (it was mentioned in the book)

Just wanted point out that these were not Delta or CAG operators. Most likely they might have been operators from Special Activities Unit, but definitely not CAG or SMU.
But the US will never use them for this type of operation. Maybe as a support role but never these types of operations. This is the movie magic lol 😆. This would never happen. As far as I know there aren't that many tier 1/SMU/national mission force units in the US military that will run and gun on the ground, but one of them is the unit that is most well known as Delta Force. So please elaborate the best you can on who was actually on the ground that day.
The scene where the woman runs away from teh soldiers and then goes for a hidden gun reminds me of when some friends (three females, I was surprised they chose the movie) of mine rented Apocalypse Now in High School. There was the village attack scene. When the young attractive village woman started running against the crowd, I quietly said, "shoot her." As she got closer to toward the helicopter, I said it louder. My friends looked at me funny. I am a generally nice guy. That comment was out of character. Then the helicopter blew up. I then said, "You should have shot her." That's when my friends asked my what those comments were about. We rewound the tape (this was on VCR) and I pointed out that everyone was running away. Why should she be running against the cowd toward the attacking Americans? Also, look at her hat. Why is she so careful to hold onto the straw hat? There are people with guns shooting up your village. Why do you care so much about the hat? As she got close to the helicopter, I told my friends to keep an eye on the hat. For those of you who never saw the movie, she threw the hat (which seem a bit heavy for straw) into the helicopter and two seconds later, the helicopter exploded.
