  • This will be my longest episode in my town series since I'm in a way describing a nation or a tribe of it's own. The Akureyri people have their dialect and other cultural characteristics but this is also my old hometown so I'm in this unique position say what the tourist brochures don't dare to mention.

Thank you for introducing us to Akureyri .... !
As to the weather always being great there you have to remember that some people love the weather whatever it is doing ... Here in the UK when it rains it's a great day for the Ducks ... when it snows its a great day for the Children and sledging etc ... when there's a storm its a great day for the MET office and news reporters ... and when it is extra hot its a great day for mini skirts ... and ... by using that as a basis for understanding, its always great weather here in the UK too ... !
Let us hope that the weather doesn't get too extreme now that the air holds more water... because you know how some people imagine their opinions are more sacred than the facts ... and they don't like change.
It could lead to the elderly getting violent and no one needs to see that.

Glyfi, we just LOVE your videos. My wife and I just got back from Iceland and we've already made plans to go back (quite a long trip from Los Angeles). We stayed in and enjoyed Akureyri very much. We even learned how to pronounce it correctly. Using English words, we decided on "Acu-ready." ;-) We are both geology nuts and had hoped to see some lava somewhere on our trip (but the island waited for us to get back home to start acting up). Every time we go somewhere, something happens to wherever we have been. After we left Mexico, it got hit by a hurricane. After we left Paris, Notre Dame almost burned down. So leaving Iceland will probably assure the volcano won't be far behind! We also joked about telling people "We swam in the Blue Lagoon right before it got filled in by lava!" ;-) Thanks again for all the work you do on these videos and you've got a great drone! -- John Kiernan and Harriet Boxer

Thanks a lot John and Harriet :) it's so nice to get comments like this and I hope my channel will help you to prepare for the next trip, it's just so much to see here :) and not everything is covered in the tourist brochures :) so I'm trying to keep my approach more personal since I'm not representing any companies or towns. And yes, we might get an eruption soon :) but it might just as well be old Hekla, anything is possible as things look now. And best regards to LA from Iceland and welcome back :)

Several times I have thanked you for your very fine photos and videos, but I have to say, that this one was really moving me. It was a little bit like coming home. We visited Iceland ten times and were in Akureyri every time. When we first entered the town coming from Goðafoss over the old (gravel) road in 1984 (of course reading George Orwell then) it was about half as big, as it is today. We will always remember the development with the constantly expanding swimming pool, the renovated old houses and of course the growing camping side. We visited the Nanni-House due to the fact, that Jón Sveinsson is still very popular in Germany and lived and died in our hometown Köln (or Cologne in English) and is buried in the most famous graveyard in town „Melaten“.

Thank you so much and sorry for late reply, busy comment section :) and I sometimes loo track of things, but I read the Nonni books in my childhood and loved them, was thinking about them the other day, because I have to mention a story from one of his first books in an upcoming video. I would like to visit his grave some day. But wow how the roads have changed, but we still have plenty to complain over :) And check out my little local Akureyri channel, actually all in Icelandic, but there are some moods there you might like this one I just made from pollution /the pond as we call it :) And greetings from iceland and always welcome :)czcams.com/video/03n_mfsc7yo/video.html

I went there in 1986 or so, gravel and mud all the way from Reykjavik and took all day to get there. It seemed slightly unfriendly to utlendingur (amazing I still know the word for foreigner) but certainly clean and interesting. I see the roads now paved and smooth and while that makes it easy to travel, also less adventure trying to fix things that break off while rattling along bumpy roads.

My daughter and I spent 3 days in Akureyri in May 2017. We have many fond memories of our time there. The mountain pass west of the city was treacherous to cross due to a blizzard, but the valley below was lovely. We drove around to Grenivik, and returned via the coastal road to Davik and Siglufjordur. We were fortunate to rent a suite in a guesthouse near the waterfront. Akureyri is a city where I would consider retiring to. Thanks for your videos. :)

Watched this video twice, for the scenery and your humor. However, I recenlty returned from Norway and Iceland (Reykjavik region only) and I regret to inform you that the nothernmost botanic garden is not in Akureyri but in Tromso Norway, which is 300 km north of the Arctic Circle. Beatiful flowers in bloom there and I spotted one - the Himalayan blue poppy - in your video segment on the botanic garden in Akureyri. Now i am following your volcano videos.
We saw the tourist eruption when we were in Iceland in mid-July. Long ago I was able to watch several of the eruptions of Mt St Helens from my hometown of Portland, Oregon.

I am really impressed. Very nice video. And a beautiful town. It is really a beauty! The most impressive thing is that it has many trees. I would say too much trees) I mean in most of the videos about Iceland there are not so many to be seen and Akureyri has a lot of them. Is it because of the climate? Very interesting clip. I will try to see the other too. Thank you for your effort!

Thank you very much! the climate in Akureyri helps, but the people here are a bit tree-crazy and that helps way more :)

Is it strange for me to say that I love your accent? I love the way a lot of Icelanders say things in English. I've been trying to learn some words and phrases in Icelandic for when I visit. I know most of you know English, but it might be nice to say a couple of things in Icelandic. What do you think?

Just had acquaintance's come back from Iceland . They said its dark, expensive and lovely people . My daughter had her Geography field trip cancelled there due to covid and one day i will get there on my motorbike but they no longer do a ferry from Shetland so i have to get to Denmark ! (from scotland) So nice to see sheep free tree areas !

If Niceair is clever, they try to get a lease of an Airbus NEO (320 maybe?) and goes for a "cheapo" run. Europe - Iceland - North America. not as a direct flight, but with a connector in Akureyri. 2 days in iceland, week in canada, one night in iceland....
I have NO idea if that would work,. it just sounds awesome in my head.
thanks for the video. Hope to get back to traveling maybe next year.... and Iceland has been on my list for ages, ESPECIALLY central and northern Iceland.

The other new airliner "Play" is moving into the US market with Keflavík as conceding airport but it's a tough market and I'm hoping that this new airliner doesn't go for to big bites like WOW air who went bankrupt, But the prices with NiceAir seem to be fine and you are only little over an hr. away from the highlands, the Sprengisandur entry, or 2 hrs away from the Kjölur road entry, and welcome to Iceland :)

I noticed how many trees there are in Akureyri now. When I visited Iceland (long time ago - early 80’s I think) there were no trees at all! So it’s funny how you say there are limits on tree height these days since they have “gone wild with all this tree planting stuff”.
