  • The M&P 15-22 barrel nut may loosen over time and use. This causes inaccuracy. This video demonstrates how to check the barrel nut and adjusted to factory specifications. This will restore the rifle’s accuracy.

    Great video, I'm going to check my brand new 15-22 that I got last week but haven't shot yet. I assumed that they have properly installed the barrel. Now I'm not going to take that for granted! After seeing some others recommend cleaning and oiling new guns before shooting I decided to do mine also. I'm glad I did because I found a 1 inch piece of polymer shaving (flashing) in the channel on top of the bolt where the spring and charging handle reside and some debris particles in the barrel. I don't think these would have caused any danger, but may have caused FTF if it interfered with the bolt action at all. In general the action just felt stiff and dry, not smooth like a machine should. After checking everything and removing the debris and adding a light coat of gun oil to the slidey-bits everthing is nice and smooth. I do plan on doing the ejector upgrade also.

    Great point about debris possibility infiltrating the loose connection.

    I thought I was losing my mind for the past 2 days. I couldn't get the rifle to hold any group and when I did the poi would shift again after a reload. I ordered the tool but im pretty frustrated that I have been fighting this for 2 days. I have owned the rifle for 10 years and never had this problem. Now i have to order a damn 30 dollar tool.

    Thanks. Mine came back from S&W with a replaced entire Bolt and Extractor. Now runs all ammo - even subsonics. Maybe they had a bad batch?

    Nice job. Sorry for the following negative comments but I can't help criticizing when I hear "clip" when referring to the "removable box type MAGAZINE," it is not a "clip." A clip is a light gauge metal piece that holds 5 cartridges to load a MAGAZINE more quickly than loading each individual cartridge into the MAGAZINE, generally found when using higher caliber rounds in the military or purchasing those cartridges in bulk such as 7.62X39MM. Also, the "crush nut" is not a nut, it's a crush washer.

    If you leave that handguard end cap off you may see better accuracy as well.

    So would it not be advised to lap the upper receiver and handguard on all 4 mating surfaces? To assure uniform pressure and perfect fit when torquing barrel nut?

    Is this common with the M&P 15-22?
    Mine is fairly new still and seem to be having trouble getting it sighted in accurately and not sure what the hell is going on

      Depends on when it was made!! If it's a newer pistol version it's probably good, if it's like his then I'd definitely check it!! I had 1 of the original rifles and had the handguard changed before I knew what I was doing Lol My gunsmith retightened everything and after adding an aluminum handguard I noticed an obvious shift in accuracy for the better. In my opinion, I ONLY use a red dot with these, and I can hit half dollars at 40-50 yards with it. With a scope on the rifled version, I couldn't get a group within 3 inches to save my life at 60-80 yds!! My suggestions are red dot, high quality ammo, put it in a sled if you want the best chance at 1 MOA groups, and finally... Go SHOOT IT!!!! Lol Most people bought these and have put less than 100 rounds through it Haha Don't be that guy Lol Good luck

  • @LKaramazov

    Is it common for it to be loose? Is there a certain amount of shooting when it’s advisable to have it checked or do you just judge if you’re loosing accuracy.I’d probably have a gunsmith do mine since I’m not very mechanically inclined.

      I would put witness marks on the nut and then check the marks before firing to see if they are in proper alignment. See video about witness marks.

    How about freefloating the barrell?

    • @diygunswithmike
      @diygunswithmike  Před 3 lety +3

      The barrel can be made free-floating by removing the end cap at the front of the Forend/Hand Guard. This may affect the accuracy a bit. However, the rifle was designed to a certain degree of accuracy and if you want to be more accurate its best to get a rifle designed to be more accurate. I think the M&P 15-22 Rifle is fantastic for plinking with a semi-auto weapon and its a load of fun at the range. When I want maximum accuracy that I am capable of I use a Ruger Precision Rimfire bolt action. To me a bolt action rifle is more accurate than a semi-auto, and the Ruger Precision Rimfire is affordable at about $100 more than the M&P 15-22. One rifle for fun and one rifle for serious accuracy. Hope this helps.

    I was wondering why AR builds seen to require a receiver vise block, but you were able to just put the barrel in a vise to tighten the barrel nut. Hmm...

    • @rmblwgn
      @rmblwgn Před rokem +2

      The 15-22 upper is plastic. You cant put it in an upper vise or it will destroy upper when you put torque on it
