- Is the Tire Pressure Monitoring System on your 3rd Gen Toyota Tacoma not working?! This was driving me crazy after rotating tires. No matter what I did the tire pressure never displayed on my dash. In this video I'll show you how to fix this with one tool! Don't go to the dealership or tire shop... Fix it yourself at home!

Just a thought but make sure your tires aren’t directional when you rotate them, great video Jason 👍😁
Good point! No should’ve said that. My KO2s are not.
Exactly what I needed to see. My ocd couldn’t take it anymore. I swapped new wheels and tires and received dashes afterwards. I watched your video and purchased this tool. I agree…the set up is a bit much with their installs and updates, but went by your video and my low pressure light was off by the time I backed out of my garage, and the readouts worked by the time I got to the end of my driveway. One note for someone buying this…during the setup, ensure you choose the correct market. Mine was in Europe and the Tacoma didn’t appear, so my heart sank. Once I counted to ten and breathed a bit, I found my mistake and chose America, and now all is right in the world again. lol
Getting ready to do my tire swap soon. I hope everything goes as smoothly as it did for you, sir. Great video.
Very cool! I didn’t know a DIY tool existed and this accessible
Worked like a charm for me when doing a seasonal wheel/tire swap. Thanks!
You're very welcome.
Nice video and clear instructions, had the same problem with my five wheel sensor Landcruiser , Toyota dealer wanted more than $500 to do tyre swaps because of sensors , gave me the run round how they would need to remove tyres to read sensors??? One thing you stretched all the way up to read sensor in the spare. These gadgets will work fine from the opposite side of tyre , no need to get dirty.
I tend to set the tires up about 2 psi below what is correct and install in car computer. Then fill the extra air after to correct pressure . Do this as winters are cold where I live and the sensor light never comes on!
Thanks for the simple and great video. Just got my Autel tool and it made it simple to fix my TPMS sensors.
Excellent! Glad it helped! I know I was relieved when I finally figured this out.
Great video Jason
Another note on tire rotation. I've always done 5 tire rotation on the same scheme as you do and had great success. But once I wondered, hey, what if I would flip tires over on each wheel, like inner side out? Why? To wear more evenly. Well, after flip I've got vibrations, slippages on bumpy curved roads, could not get rid of those and even flipping tires back to what they were did not resolve the issue. So, 5k story short: do not flip tires on wheels! Just rotate them, either 4 or 5 of them and that's it. BTW, great videos, Jason, all of them! Thanks.
You are correct the dealer wanted me to go in every time I installed my winters (on separate rims) and my summers in the spring. I went to the tire shop I bought my wheels and sensors and they cloned the standard sensors.
So for my 2023 Tacoma, I bought an oem wheel, tire, and sensor and installed when I did a 5 wheel rotation. Then I programed the new one into the ECU, alll is well. I will have to do the program at every rotation, but only takes 5 minutes. I use Autel ST508.
Ur vid was great! Just put in a new sensor could not get or understand y I couldn’t make it work!! After watching took less then three minutes and only had to let the truck run for less than a minute! All pressures displayed.
This device worked for me. I bought a set of rims and had oem sensors installed. I scanned the sensors ID then programmed to the ECU and worked. Tacoma 2019
Awesome! Glad to hear. It’s so nice to just do this programming at home. I have a 4Runner and Tacoma so it’s very much worth having.
I used your affiliate link to purchase TPMS tool and It worked!
Thank you
👍👍👍
Thank you SO much! I used this for my 2022 Toyota Sienna. When it came to selecting my spare tire {which my model doesn’t come with.. crazy right?!} you just move to the next step. Anyways, it worked just like your video showed!!
Fantastic!
For an Autel MaxiTPMS tool that's a generation earlier from the TS508, it's impressive.
Good job on performing the TPMS relearn.
Can it relearn oem sensors?
@@lennoxcooper3881 Yes it can.
Thank you! I heard it comes with free lifetime updates . Is that true?
@@lennoxcooper3881 It does. Although the tool can read and register (relearn) direct-fit OE sensors and programmable sensors that were already programmed, the TS508 can only program blank Autel MX-Sensors.
how bout the older 408 can i get that workin on my 2016 tacoma?
What would be the problem if the TPM media screen displays your tire pressures but the screen will not turn off but instead always showing all four tire pressure?
Great video
Thanks! Glad it helped. This was driving me crazy last fall.
1000th like! Thanks Jason.
Wow nice! 😁
I just bought a used 2018 TRD off road 4Runner. It has four of the optional trd alloy wheels one of the previous owners bought. The spare is a standard steel of the same OEM size (265/70R17). The four ‘road’ tires had 50 psi in them! The spare had 20 psi. I brought down the pressure to 35 psi and matched the same with the psi in the spare. My tpms light went nutzoid. I have no individual tire psi indicators. This trim and year does not provide for that. Just a tire icon that flashes. I brought up all five tires to 45 psi (wrong pressure) and the tpms light stopped flashing and is no longer on. I think I need to figure out a plan on how to fix this….. or go without tpms in the future. Or don’t fret about the light staying on.
Great video! I have been frustrated with this 5 tire rotation issue myself. Quick question I don’t think you mention in the video. Obviously the programmed spare does not show up in the dash display, BUT does it trigger the TPMS light when pressure drops below a certain threshold? I’m guessing it does?
I don’t believe so.
Where you at buddy I need help with this on my taco
When i rotate a 5 wheel tire rotation on my 2020 4runner, i just reset it thru the display. Sometimes i have to try it a few times before it works. No tool needed.
Hi Jason, i have 2016 tacoma then i bought a tire and wheel that came from 2023 so i got the TPMS lights on in the dash board then i bought the Autel TS501 i’ve follow the instruction but the TS501 could not recognize the tire sensor. What do you think i need to do?
I suspect that the sensor was a low quality aftermarket item, it failed (they fail quickly, sometimes instantly) or wont work with your system (designed for a host of different vehicles, but not designed well for any of them). The TS501 should still sense a good one, that just doesnt work with your vehicle. Not detecting it at all says it has failed. Probably someone went cheap, and sold you junk. I am seeing people say this all over these videos, and that the best is the dealer sensor, designed specifically for your vehicle. They work much better
You just saved me $20 👊
As long as the tires DO NOT have a directional tire symbol, which is a well defined arrow, you may rotate the tires cross directionally. If the arrow is on the sidewalk with the word rotate, that means the front driver side tire rotates to the rear driver side tire (#1 tire to the #3 tire location) and the passenger side front tire goes directly back to the rear passenger side tire (#2 to #4) and the back wheel come directly forward where #3 moves to #1 and #4 moves to #2. Also, look in your owners manual to see what Toyota recommends.
Thanks for stopping by buddy!
I have a 5th generation TRD Pro what do you recommend for tire pressures for this vehicle?
For the street just do the pressure listed in the door sticker or owners manual… which is 32 PSI I believe. For off-roading it depends what I’m doing. Usually I run 17-20 PSI
I think I found it you have cloned sensors, don’t reset the system while close to your other wheels with sensors. My system, I believe can sense my summer wheels which are in a trailer in my driveway. My warning is on when I leave in the morning AVS comes on when I pull into my parking spot in the driveway. So, I’m assuming or suspect it’s reading my wheels that are in the trailer. I’ve checked all my installed wheels’ pressures and they are good.
I just got a new set of wheels and tires installed but it won’t display on my Tacoma. Took it back to the tire shop to have them reprogram them and they still couldn’t have it appear. Should I just take it to the dealership and have them fix the sensors?
This happened to me as well. Sometimes it can take a while to show up. I’d try to have the tire shop fix it so you aren’t charged.
@edgargutierrez9596 I am having the same situation. Did you ever get anything to show up on the display?
Will the Autel work with generic sensors or only the OEM models
As long as they’ve been previously programmed then they should work.
Do you have a review video of the tool, or does it only do TPMS sensor things? Ive been looking for an all vehicle sensor tool (check engine) and TPMS.
To my knowledge the TPMS reader (proximity sensor) is its own thing. I have a separate Code/live data tool.
@@JasonExplainsThingsthank you
How did you get the spare sensor into your Tacoma system. My dealer told me it will only hold 4.. If that is so, how would I take 1 sensor out and put another in place of it.Would that come down to dismounting 2 tires from rims at every rotation to get the sensor changed over. If anyone knows, let me know.
Just had a thought. What about cloning a sensor so it things it is the same wheel and tire all along. I may try that.
@@rynersandberg9601, how would you clone a sensor? BTW, this diagnostic tool, what it does is simply enumerates all sensors, makes sure which is which, then writes 4 proper sensors to Toyota's ECU and skips the spare one.
Hi Jason,
I just had my spare rotated im on my 2020 4runner and I am having issues now. Apparently my spare didn’t have a pressure gauge on it, so I paid discount tire to add one. So now all 5 have the sensor. Discount was unsuccessful twice to program the pressure. My low pressure indicator light went off on my dash but the pressure isn’t reading out for the four wheels. Ugh soo annoyed. I didn’t see them relearn the spare in with the main four, though. Maybe that’s it?
I am seeing all over these videos that cheap aftermarket sensors are not reliable. They fail a lot, read poorly, dont reprogram, etc. The reason is they are designed for a host of different vehicles, and are not well set up for each. Dealer sensors intended specifically for your vehicle are much better.
Did you have to install the sensor in your spare or is there one by default? I never even considered this for my Colorado... But I also don't do 5 tire rotations... yet.
I needed to install the sensor in the spare. 👍
@@JasonExplainsThings Something I'll have to remember when I get new tires. That's where I draw the DIY line!
Oh of course. Mounting tires sucks!
May be a stupid question but I have a SR and it doesn’t display TMPS readings on the dash. However I changed out my tries and rims years ago and have same issue. Would it still recognize this even with different rims and tires?
Most likely yes. I’m guessing you have the same system to alert you if it’s low… the pressures just aren’t displayed.
@@JasonExplainsThings thought so. Thanks for the video! Can’t wait to get the light to go away!
I just installed new wheels and tires with aftermarket TPMS that is supposed to work with the truck. I haven’t gotten any tire pressure to show up and the TPMS light is one will this tool still work?
I'm not 100% sure. Mine were programmed and synced one time. My educated guess is that it would work. Worst case scenario... if it doesn't work you can return it to Amazon and get your money back. First I'd go to the tire shop you got your new wheels from and have them program it for you.
@@JasonExplainsThings reporting back, got the tool and did this exact process everything worked! Seems that the relearn process is the same as “programming” the sensors. Great video!
Fantastic!
Can the sensors be reprogrammed if the in sensor batteries are defective or dead?
So every time we do the seasonal tire exchange they need to reprogram? I’m new to car
If you swap wheels… yes.
It’s super easy after doing it a few times.
FYI You also have to use Autel TPMS sensors in order for it to reprogram. It won't work with OEM or other brands.
I don’t have Autel sensors and it worked fine.
@@JasonExplainsThings It didn't work for me. The sensors on our Lexus GX started dying. I replaced all five with OEMs and tried to reprogram with no luck. Autel told me that it would only program their brand.
@@Drarkansasfwb
AFASIK OEM sensors are already programmed no need to reprogram them just do a relearn using OBD II
TOBY is the best 😀 thanks for this video bro
Hope this works with a 2020 4runner..
It should. Same process as my 2021 4Runner.
nice video. we has developed a new automatic tire deflators which are the most accurate and fatest. we are searching for a distributor in US.if u are interested, pls let me know.thanks!
Hey Where I could find the Tire pressure monitoring system TPMS Receiver card on Tacoma 2017 Pls help
🤙🤙🤙
Short story. New wheel and tire. On board reset didnt work. Tpms scanner tool didnt either.
If the sensors are brand new they might need to be programmed.
If u are just rotating tires with oem sensors, DONT listen to this thinking u need a damn expensive programmer . The vehicle does it for you. Turn the key on, push the TPMS Reset button until it flashes and goes out. Turn your vehicle on, and drive for 10 minutes. Bring up the Tire Pressure Screen, and it will display blank until the sensors are relocated. Usually takes 5-10 minutes continuous driving. Your Welcome.
Um… maybe you have attention span issues. I said this is for folks doing a 5 wheel rotation or swapping out wheels. I never said a standard tire rotation will cause the issue I documented.
I made the video to help people having an issue I had a hard time finding a fix for. You’re welcome. 👍
@@JasonExplainsThings Hopefully someone saves a lot of their time reading this first instead of wasting time watching your entire video, instead of putting that on the title that just says Rotating Tires
This does not work for my 2023 Tacoma
@@jdsim9173 you are doing it wrong. they didnt change anything until '24
This is so ridiculous Toyota has these setup this way. Even nuttier? Tundras can save more than four TPMS sensors....:frustrationloading:
So, I use the same tool on my 4Runner since I have a fullsize spare! Easy peezy!
There is a reset switch on every single toyota tacoma ....no scanner needed
Hey Nic. Yes, I showed that. This is for folks that have issues getting the tpms sensors to read or update. If you don’t do tire rotations like I do, or swap seasonally to another set of wheels you’ll likely not have this issue or need this tutorial.
@@JasonExplainsThings trust me all you gotta do is search tacoma tpms here on youtube...everyone has done that...when I got my 3rd Gen the first thing I did was look at customization tips and everything from tools to hidden features popped up....
There is a switch but on my 2023 toyota 4runner trd pro no amount of driving has reset mine…ughhhhh
👎
$200 for a tool that can only do 1 thing. 😁
And it’s already paid for itself several times. 👍
And I’m sorry but that literally no sense. My torque wrench just torques bolts. My floor jack just lifts stuff. Maybe tools and doing stuff yourself just isn’t your thing? 🤷🏻♂️
I change my tires winter/summer twice a year. Dealer wants $150 to reset TPM each time. Seems like a good deal to me....
