      I’m flattered. Your work is absolutely amazing Chuck. I typically reference your photos and settings for deep sky so I can gauge my own. Thank you for stopping by. I should be back in the solar game by mid summer. Really excited about it. I might go Calcium K first. Nobody is really employing that so it might be interesting to the community.

    I'm so glad you got the MAK180, THE BEST BANG for the BUCK for a planetary SCT optical system!!!

    • @GarnettLeary
      @GarnettLeary  Před 2 lety +2

      Took the words out of my mouth. Absolutely. I don’t think enough can be said regarding its durability and ease of use. Collimation turns off a lot of beginners. This scope has superior contrast and durability compared to its SCT cousins. Let’s face it, most people don’t live where a C11 or C14 is usable anyway. At or around 8” I can’t find a better choice than the 180 Maksutov. People argue how flexible SCT’s are. I remind them that for the price of the Hyperstar you may as well get yourself a refractor. You waste time converting the one scope across its functions also whereas you could just have a second scope setup on standby. I doubt I’ll ever be sold on SCT’s. The Edge series seem to address a lot of the issues but for me the Maksutov already addresses them all. I have had multiple bad experiences with products and come to think of it… most were Celestron.

      @MPAstro Před 2 lety +2

      @@GarnettLeary Yep the one right thing that Skywatcher SHOULD DO!!! Is launch a new series of 10" to 12" Maksutovs, then you'll see the C14's will be just a optical instrument in the past!! Nobody has not taken my suggestion seriously in any of my videos, if the Maksutov design was made the same way as the Mak180mm, there will be alot of upset SCT owners kicking off!! Don't get me wrong SCTs are great scopes if they are made in good quality parts, but now they made to just there to sell cheaply and rip-off the customers. Again from your last video there is no pride in their products anymore!! So true the words you said!!

      Thank you. Ollie is a very talented guy. I was very impressed at the 180’s light gathering capability. Obviously a full Moon helped but it’s razor sharp at F15. I didn’t get my typical minute plus ser files. They were rather short test clips and I only took a very small 10% of those. I’m very eager to go to the planets on an image run.

      Thank you. I’ve had many years to consider this particular scope. I believe it’s capability is at the upper limit of what’s possible where I live. I’m very excited about taking it to Jupiter and Saturn especially with a full mono setup. I would prefer a Maksutov to most SCT’s. I know a huge part of the community disagrees but for me personally it is true.

    g`day been thinking of getting the skywatcher 180 myself i have the edge 8" do think its worth it for the extra contrast and sharpness or just stick with the 8"edge hd ?? great video your helping me to decide to get one or not with all your videos its appreciated cheers i also have the same camera but the colour one asi290MC what's your thoughts on the focuser nice addition or a must have ?

    • @GarnettLeary
      @GarnettLeary  Před 2 lety +1

      Tough question. I will try to answer as if It’s my situation. I personally do not like SCT’s. I have zero experience with the Edge versions tho. What I noticed mostly is that Edge owners all love them. I think many issues I had with SCT’s were addressed so I must be cautious. Your Edge is undoubtedly more versatile. I have a threshold for scope size based on my environment. A 9” up would be useless where I live. I do favor higher contrast scopes especially ones that are built like tanks. Collimation is something I can live without doing even tho I’m very proficient. Regarding the focuser I think it’s relatively new. They designed it in mind for Maks and SCT’s to employ the ZWO EAF. That’s why I got the Event Horizon. It’s very well made. I have switched to full mono for solar system so I currently employ six different filters. It became necessary for image runs. Had I stuck to OSC I doubt I would have bought it. I plan to review it and show a setup sequence once my EAF arrives. I need more time with it. Manually it’s great. Getting close focus on the primary and then fine focus through the night with no image shift is fantastic. I think Farpoint has made an excellent product. It’s a little pricey but it is machined and hand inspected.

      @@GarnettLeary thanks for the reply i also don't like to colliminate as i spend too much time on it trying to get it spot on . i fitted a feather touch focuser (just the knob on the rear cell) to my edge and enjoy the 10:1 fine tuning.. i have only owned SCT`s and have no experience with other types of scopes but like the idea of the extra contrast and sharpness from the mak

    • @GarnettLeary
      @GarnettLeary  Před 2 lety +1

      Certainly. I can tell you from experience that a well collimated Maksutov just about requires throwing it against a wall to get it off. They’re built like tanks. There is definite apo-like contrast. The downside is that they take longer to acclimate than SCT’s.
