The only good thing to come from 9/11 was that 3-6 month period where it didn't matter if you were republican/democrat we were all Americans with passion and compassion. Likely never to see that unity again.
That would never happen again, if we got attacked on that scale people would just hate eachother more because some would go over the top patriotic and others blaming us saying its our fault
Fern Mccreary nah, thanks to whites, who still continue to think they’re better than everyone else because of skin color, whilst liberal diverse states thrive and white red states suffer
@@louiegonzalez6812 < - - - moron has never lived in TX. I left my native state of CA because of idiots like you. CA is not thriving, its bankrupted. Also, NY and IL are both sinking. Thanks to 0bama
It is so crazy that that happened. for almost a year, people who normally hated each other were all on the same side. The country united together in a way I’m not sure we will ever see again.
as silly as it sounds, it was important for him to throw a strike
too bad he threw 4 balls with the rest of his presidency. great moment for americans though. he isn't a bad guy, his cabinet wasn't great and going to iraq was fucking stupid.
And yet he still did infinitely better than Obama, who has turned the country into a massive race war.
TheMichiganfan97 "massive race war"? Yeah right.
Using one's free speech to protest =/= race war, but good on you for trying, you ignorant fuck.
Good throw by the President. It was very important for the American morale that he deliver, and in that big moment, he did.
it was important TO him to throw a strike

I love this, it reminds me what it is to be an American.
Going on 21 years and when the crowd starts chanting USA I start crying. After that tragedy we were all standing together. Makes me sad how divided we are now.
Just saw it again after all those years, and can't help but wipe the tears. 😢
(And I'm Canadian)
What's impressive is that he threw the strike with kevlar armor on
flash gordon and from the big boy rubber! Well done POTUS

Everyone was rooting for the city of New York at this time. I honestly wish this country could unite like that again. Sadly it will probably take another 9/11 or worse to do it.
This is one of the most American things I have ever seen.
The only thing that would've made it more American was if the Yankees had won the series. They seriously deserved to that soon after 9/11, and it's a real shame they didn't.

Don Wolfberg and two seam action!
His 9/11 speech from the rubble was pretty awesome.
didn't he throw from the normal pitching rubber also unlike most other ceremonial pitches that are thrown from closer to the plate?
yu stu yeah usually ceremonial pitches are thrown from the bottom of the mound or directly in front of it
And from the rubber!
Say whatever you want about Bush, but this was beyond a powerful moment and is very underrated as far as significance goes. The country was scared at the time and the World Series, which was damn good btw, offered us all a release from reality. No president had thrown out a first pitch at Yankee Stadium before and when it was announced the man that would lead us through this difficult time would be there in NYC, the sight of all this tragedy and fear, the country took notice. With the 3 flags found in the wreckage of the twin tower flying high in Centerfield, the president confidently throws a perfect pitch. The stadium immediately erupted in a USA chant and for 3 and a half hours we all relaxed and watched baseball.
Jon Matthews you should be a writer. Imagery was perfect
This comment is amazing
And it was a damn good pitch too. Great knuckleball.
Beautifully written! I loved his confidence walking to the mound! He just knew that he was going to throw a strike!
Jon Matthews yeah wasn't a fan. Felt he stole election from Gore. But this and the bullhorn moment pretty much changed my perception of him.
Legit one of the clutchest pitches of all time
The last time we were truly united as a people. That USA chant gives me chills, something we probably wouldn’t see today.
See also: when seal team six got Osama Bin Laden, there is similar chants all over the place.
Osama was probably like Dr Manhattan in the watchmen. Something terrible happens to bring everyone together
Amazingly President Bush said that this moment was the most nervous he was over his presidency. You are right. He had to throw a strike as strange as that sounds.
when you stand in front of 10k + as a leader of the number 1 nation of the time , of course, i'd be scared too.
Paraphrasing Derek Jeter - "You better throw a strike or they'll boo you."
Great observation David!
You better not bounce it or they’ll boo ya
Yea it's a lot easier to push pens and read teleprompters than it is to go out in the aftermath of 9/11 at the World Series in New York with all American eyes on you and throw a strike. That's why he practiced a lot for that throw and nailed it.
Still get chills. Can see they had a shorter pitching rubber for him but he went right to the mound, threw a strike and walked off like a boss
Jeter told him if he didn't go to the mound, Yankees fans would boo him lol
did you notice the kinglike stuff he has to maintain, its just an observation but he didnt pose for others photos. thats how its been, how it is, how it will be
Angel hernandez would’ve called that a ball

One of the best pitches ever thrown.
That was a magical moment. I think he also had a bulletproof vest on for that pitch, which makes it even more impressive.
He did they also had a police officer dressed as a umpire up there to
Sportsdude522 **secret service agent
The most impressive part was that he DIDN'T have on a bulletproof vest. The Secret Service wanted him in one, but he said it would restrict his throwing ability. On that night, America need him to throw a strike. He did.
Of course he did. Hes the president
Nope. He took it off.
One thing the secret service took into account was the fact that they had another 56k volunteers looking for anything suspicious.

That’s the old Yankee PA announcer Bob Sheppard. He passed away in 2010 at the age of 99. A class act indeed.
I am honored to have had the opportunity to hear him at games. Out of all of the sights and sounds of the old Yankee Stadium, all the iconic memories from my childhood going there, the thing that stands out the most probably and which is my first impression of all of those is Bob Sheppard's distinguished voice.
Bob Sheppard, who George Steinbrenner nicknamed “the voice of God” and was supposedly the only Yankee employee he never criticized
@@TheLocalLt I remember going to Bob Sheppard day in 2000 when I was a kid. They had a ceremony to honor him before the game and a bunch of the old timers came out for it. The game itself was a pretty memorable one for me too. It was a day game. We we playing a decidedly not great Orioles team, but I remember that I had been excited to see Cal Ripken Jr. play. Cal, of course, immediately gave the O’s the lead with a solo shot in the 2nd. It was his 407th HR and moved him passed Duke Snyder on the all time list (yes, I’ve looked it up lol). Tino tied it up a couple of innings later but we ended up down 4-2 going into the bottom of the 8th. That’s when Brosius came up with the bases loaded and smacked a HR into the deep LF power alley of old Yankee Stadium, giving us a 6-4 lead (and himself the 2nd of his 3 career grand slams). Mo was on the mound in the 9th so you’d think to yourself “it’s over” right? Wrong. Mo gave up 3 in the 9th including the game winning RBIs to none other than a soon to be retiring Albert Belle. We lost 7-6 O’s. Mo naturally took responsibility after the game in the press but, of course, it’s freaking baseball. Nobody’s perfect, not even Mo. It’s was, as Os manager Mike Hargrove said after the game, “fairly improbable” but that’s what happened. Pretty memorable game for a forgetful May in 2000.
@@StacheBigote thanks for sharing this story, what a great day to remember.
That Hargrove quote cracked me up, one of the ultimate examples of a pure “baseball guy”
This is a complete goosebump, patriotic, political-party-doesnt-matter moment. And a perfect strike from the full distance too. What a thrill to see it again.

Greatest moment in baseball history for me!!!! Gooooosebumpsss!!!
Give me goosebumps every time. I remember that some were fearful for some kind of attack that night at the stadium. The fans in the upper deck can see Wall Street burning. In what does GW do? Fastball right down the center. The catcher didn't have to shuffle at all or even move his glove. That, my friend, is leadership by symbolism.
So wonderful hearing Bob Sheppard's voice again. God I miss hearing him at the stadiums. As a young, single fan averaging 20-25 home games per season I grew up hearing "now batting, the first baseman, number 23, Don Mattingly, number 23". He introduced every batter that same way (position, number, name, number) from DiMaggio early on to Jeter when he was well in his mi to late 90s, taking special care to learn the exact pronunciation of all visiting player's names during pre-game warm-ups (especially the less common Latino names that everyone else butchered). When you heard his resounding voice and always perfect diction reverberating throughout that cathedral of baseball it let you know that you were indeed standing on hallowed ground. His was the voice that linked the generations of past and present fans, the one constant through all those decades.
Although not as well known for it, he was also the PA announcer for the NY Giants and since we were season ticket holders I had the distinct pleasure of hearing that voice of God on fall Sundays for over 30 years. Even now when the Giants are stinking it up on the field I sometimes catch myself closing my eyes and listening to that perfect voice echoing in my head "Sims to Bavaro, White on the tackle" or "Jaworski on the attempt, sacked by Taylor".
I'm sure some of you will think I'm a bit of a wacko to carry on like this about a PA announcer and my only reply is that if you'd of heard him you'd feel exactly the same way. Indeed, I've heard countless major leaguers recall how one of their biggest thrills as a pro ballplayer was their first time hearing Bob Sheppard announce their at bats at the old Yankee stadium
Great post, thanks for sharing.
Easily one of the best stadium voices ever. And not just the voice but how he enunciates.

His second term was problematic, but when we needed a leader desperately in 2001, he was able to stand up and not just be a President, but be THE PRESIDENT.
I literally get chills every single time I watch this
I’m not even an American but I feel very patriotic to this. One of the greatest moments in American history for sure ✊🏻
I never thought I would miss this man.
Imagine Gore in those same footsteps....just saying. Bush at that time was the right president.
Crazy how popular he was around this time.
Great President, great pitch, and what a great moment in strength this was !
1 out of 3 aint bad.
All the more sad that he blew the opportunity :(
As we remember that solemn time, Americans came together..... need more of this in 2020
Wish this country had the same untiy today it did back on this day...
National Unity was so high in the aftermath of 9/11
I remember very well this time in New York. After 9/11 through Christmas. It was very scary, very sad, but an amazing period of time. We were a small town and all next door neighbors.
this still gives me chills. never gets old.
Bill burr brought me here
This was one badass moment in time. Total confidence and strength of which the nation was in need of. Bush was the perfect president to kick ass after 911.
upvote, for sure. "We will find out who did this.. And when we do, they're not going to like me as president." So true. The Man..
9/11 happened 18 years ago today, God Bless USA 🇺🇸
I'm a Canadian, but grew up loving the game of baseball. I think it is significant that the American president threw out the ceremonial first pitch for America's favorite pastime at such a time as that. A pretty special moment for sure.
God that “USA” chant at the end of the clip always gives me chills. I miss when we were that unified as a country
Incredible moment! Just what the country needed in that instance. And he threw a perfect strike to boot.
Thats a real President.
right, because sitting in a kids classroom reading a book while the country is under attack is definitely a characteristic of a real president
Andrew G Yeah, because jumping up and running off panicking before an appropriate opportunity arose was totally a good thing to do in front of those kids. Stop watching Michael Moore, Andrew.
CHRISSO JM haha if obama sat there and read to the class like bush did you people would be flipping a $h!t
Andrew G o and then he crashed our economy 7 years later
Andrew G
Nice job tagging yourself moron.
I watched a documentary on this from the Secret Service and they tried their hardest to not let him do this due to safety, but he did it anyway. Powerful!
20200911 19 year still not forgotten
"Thank you, Mr. President."
Miss those days, when it wasn't wrong to be an American.
It’s still not wrong. If you’re one of those people who goes to another country and tells them you’re Canadian, grow a pair.
@@1439of2000 Still super proud or what? Look at what we've become.....
It's our job to wake up every day and make sure it's right. We all hang in a fragile balance, President Bush knew it then. Stay strong!
You know the anti-American sentiment has been around for a long time. Globalization is just at a higher level & outside countries social media is coming in more, so you can finally see how the world was actually looking at Americans. And of course Americans have little to do with the hatred, it's their selfish corporate interests that steal from other countries & give the rest of Americans a bad name.
The American flag has somehow become a symbol of racism. It's weird. It's almost like tons of people see the American flag as if it's the confederate flag.
