Because he was. As much of an utter disgrace that he could be at times with regards to his policies, he was at least at heart a moral and ethical human being. Bush Jr was the start of the downward trend of the GOP into their anti-truth anti-liberty attitudes, but McCain and to a lesser extent Romney were the last of the most famous Republicans that actually had somewhat of a moral compass

If you haven't watched Obama's eulogy to John McCain (who had asked him to speak at his funeral), it is worth watching. It is so touching.

He lost partially because of Palin, he certainly didn't lose because of his grace in this situation, he showed how a good and decent man should act, didn't matter anyway in the long run, 15 years later decency died.
His electoral loss had nothing to do with the decent parts of him.

Baseball became somewhat of a show of patriotism after 9/11, since it was still in season and already held a deep-rooted history with America over any other country. When baseball resumed a just a few days after the attacks, it was a major show of American perseverance and refusal to let the attacks hold power over them. Then in what seems like a plot to a cheesy B-movie, less than a month later, who else is playing in the World Series in 2001 than the New York Yankees. Games 1 & 2 were in Arizona, so Bush’s pitch at Game 3 was the first WS game in New York less than 1 month after 9/11. Watching the President walk out onto that field was a moment of pride and unity all across America.
And that dude threw a perfect strike. Legendary moment in sports.

Boston Red Sox won that series, along with the New England Patriots (both had been on a loosing streak since as far back as I could remember- born ‘66 in Boston - that was just unreal to us - 9/11 & Massachusetts the start of the American Revolution)

Wholesome moments like this are extremely rare not only in American politics, but in world politics in general.

That moment was electric. Made me feel something
The problem with this is, Trump is a big proponent of the hostility we are currently seeing in politics, not just in America, but around the western world. He verbally attacks opponents, spread lies about Obama being born in Kenya, demanding Clinton be put in jail, refusing to concede defeat, and turning against Pence overnight because he refused to say the 2020 election was stolen. He has made some pretty misogynistic comments over the years also, which kind of flies in the face of his tribute to the female representatives in this video.
I'm not saying he is the only politician to engage in this sort of behaviour, because he certainly is not. But he has certainly stoked it and emboldened his supporters to behave in the same way.
We need to return to an era where political debates focused solely on the political issues, rather than the people and their families. And an era where opposing leaders respectfully disagreed with each other, but never resorted to personal insults.
And above all, America needs to remember that the peaceful transfer of power is one of the crowning achievements of any civilised nation!
Unfortunately I can't see these things returning anytime soon, especially if Trump wins the GOP nomination next year, which he looks almost certain to do so.

This is why it is so important to protect our nation at any cost. We have the freedom to not only disagree with those in positions of power but can also be vocal with our opinions.
In the next ones, you should include:
-Bill Clinton giving Bob Dole a Presidential Medal of Freedom
-When Ben Carson didn't hear his name at a debate and awkwardly stood while everyone else was passing him (this part could also be a "no context" clip), Trump eventually stood with him so it would be less awkward
-Any of the moments with George W. Bush and Michelle Obama
-George H.W. Bush's concession speech in 1992, particularly when he congratulates Clinton and praises his "strong campaign" (since this was the last time an incumbent president lost reelection AND conceded)
-The viral 2020 Utah governor election ad when both candidates appeared together to call for a return of civility in politics
-Reagans "youth and inexperience" quote in a 1984 debate, as even Mondale was laughing at the joke
-When McCain hosted SNL in 2008, just days before the election, particularly the cold open when he was selling election-related items on QVC
A small moment was when Republican Richard Riordan won the mayorship of Los Angeles in the aftermath of the LA riots. He had an Asian opponent who was more politically experienced and just hammered Riordan in the debate. As a fellow Asian left of center, it made me uncomfortable. In Riordan's acceptance speech, he said with the utmost sincerity he would welcome Democrats, Republicans, independents, people of every race, creed, color and sexual orientation to his administration. I'm not from LA but it was another wholesome moment that resonated with me.
Also, Al Gore acknowledging, as president of the senate, his 2000 defeat to George Bush

Trump’s interview on Ruth was such an out of character and genuinely sweet moment for him, it still kind of feels like a dream
Trump plays a caricatured version of himself to shock/organic market and get free publicity. He's been doing that for decades. He got billions of dollars in free media coverage in 2016. He's not an idiot.
You know, I’ve been watching a lot of clips I never saw from the 2016 and 2020 race. He may not be perfect, but he acted like that more often than I think many of us have seen.
One I saw recently was kind of similar to the McCain speech (in its own regard), near the beginning of this video.
This was during 2016. Trump VS Clinton.
Basically they were asked if they think positively of one another or respect one another.
If I recall correctly, Hillary basically said: she respects his kids and how he raised them, but not so much respect for him as a person.
Then Trump spoke, and to summarize he basically said, he respects Hillary and how hard she fought for her campaign, and how he disagrees with her on many important topics but he has nothing against her as a person.
I was really thrown off. A beautiful sign of respect. I want to see more moments of respect in this 2024 race.

THAT is how politics are supposed to be ran: you might not agree with the opponent or the person across the aisle but you can treat one another with dignity and respect. You are there to serve the people, not combat and mudsling one another. Having two parties should bring out debate and arguments, so that compromise for the good of both can be met. But it can be done civilly
this is even better than the no context series, these are a great reminder of how we can be united as a country and respect each other. 🇺🇸❤️ we are all people worthy of respect, no matter our differences we should try to do so.

You’re really underselling that pitch by W. It wasn’t just “a baseball game.” It was the game 1 of the 2001 World Series, which was IN New York, barely a month after 9/11. W was wearing a bulletproof vest under his jacket. One of the umpires on the field was actually a secret service agent. He knew he had to nail that pitch or they’d boo him. So he practiced it beforehand and he threw an absolutely beautiful pitch. So much symbolism and meaning behind that moment. And I wouldn’t have ever voted for the guy.

One thing I will say about Boehner,at least he tried to hold the line against the furthest fringes of the Right in Congress. He was the last Republican Speaker that actually believed the GOP and Democratic Party could unify as they did in the early to mid 2000s,unlike Paul Ryan who pretty much let the Freedom Caucus and later MAGA caucus have free reign of the lower chamber

I know Boehner is a cryer, but I legitimately got a little emotional watching him tear up while the Pope spoke. I can’t help but believe that he is simultaneously proud and humbled.

I was a kid and saw these john mccain moments on tv and agreed with him and the grown ups around me made sure to say how wrong he was. I wish john had become president now more than ever. R.I.P. John, a true American hero.

More of these please :) Us here in the US are tired of the radicals and the fighting. Yeah, the left and right don't agree on pretty much everything, but we're all still human and neighbors, and sometimes we have each other's backs cause we're neighbors and we care about each other regardless of the politics.

Except the Austrian government who mandated the (cough) just LAST YEAR. Here in the UK, the Government was about to introduce V passports to enter stadiums, pubs and nightclubs. I like to think that the political parties in this country are like siblings. You fight, you make fun of each other, and sometimes it feels like you can't stand the people around you. But at the end of the day, you still love each other, and you've all got each others backs.

Vice President Mike Pence should be added to this list. He acted independently and critically after the January 6 riot. He did not give in to the threats and pressures. Just think what might have happened if we had a different vice president who was a sycophant - we will be living in a very different world today.

This discredites any claims against Biden being dumb, he realizes pretty fast that no one else but him could get the Medal of Freedom because no one else stood by to receive it anymore, he reacted pretty quickly and his initual reaction seemed genuine, god this video is so fascinating, thank you D Carl for all the funny stuff and yet the little beam of light which is this video!

I don't think Biden is dumb per se, but age is quickly taking its toll on him. He started showing signs of it back in 2019. You see videos from the 90s and 2000s and Biden is quite good at speaking.
The simple rebuttal is that even if he was very perceptive in that video, he could be impaired now. He is 10+ years older now than he was in that clip

This is a terrific collection of clips and watching it just now gave me a much-needed boost of pride in our nation and some of its great leaders. The toxicity of the past eight years has taken a heavy toll. I only hope that once the MAGA madness subsides we can return to the days of decency in our public affairs. It's not just MAGA it's populism in general. The whole government just tries to take away our freedoms. We have to go back to basics and restore our freedoms! Freedom to speak, freedom of religion, freedom of press, fair and just court system, etc. The government, on both sides, tries to remove various freedoms every day. The Democrats try to remove our freedom of speech and the Republicans try to remove freedom to make decisions about the body. The problem is populism.
