- Why do we love the end of the world?
Because post-apocalypse video games are dope. Ever since playing Fallout I've been obsessed with post-apocalyptic video games. From loving Fallout 1 & 2 to 3, Stalker, Metro, The Last of Us and so on. All these games use the end of the world in such an interesting way to drive a narrative and bring forth innovative game play mechanics and lore. So, let's look to where it all started.

Really informative! I enjoyed watching this video! You earned a like, subscriber and a blue-star bottlecap. The cap should come by mail so don't attempt to shoot the mailman in the head when he scoots over to your house, mistaking him for a raider. You will regret it.
Boy howdy! That's amazing, this will be my third blue star! I just got a message from a guy named Allen Marks saying he wants to meet up and give me a 4th one! My luck must be through the roof.
Don't meet allen marks! He'll steal all of your caps!
Post apocalyptic settings in video games have a ton of potential for great story telling. I really liked the way you laid everything out here. Great info and presentation!
Thank you! And I agree, I love games that use post apocalyptic settings to their benefit
The first apocalyptic game I played was Fallout 3 and it was quite a shock coming from Oblivion, though you could say that there is an apocalyptic event in Oblivion. Now I've lost track of all the games that came out so I'm glad to rounded them up. Not only that, I'm impressed by the production quality here, both in research and editing, it feels less like a game review and more like a professional documentary
Thanks my dude! I wanted to go into more detail on each title, but tried to limit it to the really innovative titles. I tried to keep this brief lmao
Dude this was some seriously great stuff! The editing, sounds and transitions are some of your best work by far!
One of my favourite post apocalypse based games has to be mad max for sure, So glad you threw it in here! Great stuff
Thanks man! Glad it turned out lol. Never making a video this long again
This is seriously one of my favorite genres. Both in gaming and out. Hell, Fallout inspired my audio drama, "Dark Lands". The post-apocalypse is just such fertile ground for endless storytelling possibilities. Fantastic video!
The original Fallout games are some of my favorite post apocalyptic games.
Liked the Fallout sounds you used
Thanks! It's my favorite part as well lol
The entire video should have been dubbed the fallout era
Absolutely loved Tokyo Jungle. Happy to see it included!
Incredible video mate! The editing made me want to up my game, that was dope and damn, I didn't know how many games in this genre I'd played... I'd say a good 80% of this video I've experienced but my personal favourite has to go to Fallout New Vegas (says my nostalgia) It's just such a great time. Appreciate the shout out and I know you put a lot of effort into this video mate and I just wanted to say it was well worth it this video was seriously captivating.
Thanks dude. Greatly appreciate it! The fallout games are amazing. Fallout 3 and NV are my tops for sure, such a interesting world and lore. Glad this video turned out palatable though! Lol
Yo man! I loved it as usual. I think these history videos really work well with your style. Super well-edited, very informative without ever being boring - overall amazing.
Thanks my dude! I find the research of it all really interesting.....editing it all is another story lol
This was such an informative & enjoyable video about the whole concept of a post apocalypse scenario, this was seriously such a great video!
Thanks bro! Glad you liked it 😊
Enjoying all the content so far! Definitely gonna be tuning back in! Keep it up bro!
🙏🙏
Another interesting post apocalyptic racing game is POD (planet of death). It's set on a colonized planet which is being harvested for resources but in one of the mining camps they uncover an "organism" that starts to spread and corrupt the whole planet. The last few survivors build cars with whatever scrap they can find and organize a racing tournament so the winner can secure a place in the last escape pod. Amazing game from the 90's release for PC
i was born in 99 so i was 12-13 when state of decay came out and then a year or 2 later 7 days to die came to console and i loved them. i played the hell out of them
Used some video games for inspiration for a post-apocalypse story I was writing! Not a gamer, but looked at artwork, fan stories, and review and trivia videos (like this) for ideas for characters and environments! The Last Of Us, Resident Evil, and Call of Duty were the top ones!
my guy come with some new sweet edits those sounds were so fallout like im accessing a pip boy lol. but man the list of games mentioned in the description was like 70 games (i tried to count lol)
It's close it 70 lol. I tried to keep it brief too!!
@@MrHammers "close to 70" and "brief" haha.
There's a lot of games in the genre bro!
Oh wow great minds think alike I was thinking about doing a video like this! Great job!
Great video! Amazing research and well put together!
Thanks dude!
this channel is amazing. so happy i found it
Thank you!
Every channel will eventually have that one video that sticks out above the rest, that one that pierces the veil and grab all the attention the moment you get to a channel page.
This is that sort of video, this is some serious good shit fam. Excellent job.
Edit: Oh I bet you thought you could slip that Frostpunk theme past me @ 11:35
Thanks my friend, greatly appreciated!
After watching your vid on Frostpunk I knew I had to cop some of those tracks to use, they're just too good! lol
My favourite topic in media. Just awesome.
Really liking this channel
It's 3 am, and I'm sitting here thinking to myself "What the heck is the medieval form of an apocalypse, and why is it breath of the wild the closest thing I can think that best represents this?"
hey great great work!!!
I’d love to see a video for fallout 2 the way you did for fallout 1, that video was so good!
Very informative video! Some of these games I'd never heard of before and I love post-apocalyptic games. Thank you for also naming Half-Life. It always felt post-apocalyptic to me (especially Half Life 2 and it's environment), but it often gets catagorized as purely dystopian, when it's more of a hybrid.
Dude, you've gotta do more history stuff... that was fkn enlightening as hell hahaha
Thanks bro! Much appreciated
First post apocalyptic race game was Carmagedon.
And there are some RTS altough, like Dune, Dune 2, Krash Kill & Destroy,....
My favorite one is Stalker followed by Fallout. But you forgot to mention Minecraft. Yes, Minecraft - you are the only human left, you gather resources to survive, you fight mutated monsters and creepy aliens from another dimension invading the world sent by a giant space dragon. If it is not post apocalyptic, what else happened that the world end up like this?!
7DTD>Minecraft
If you need more proof on Minecraft, look uo Retro Gaming Now's videos on it.
great video!
you know, I'm surprised gears of war wasn't mentioned here.
you could argue that the gears series IS an apocalyptic game about soldiers trying to keep everything together
The first post apocalypse game I played was Fallout, but it was in the early 2000s. I hadn't explored the genre before, and at the time there was this Fallen Earth game that was coming out that a teamspeak friend hyped up, I never ended up playing it but I was introduced to fallout for a taste of the genre, I sucked at it and never came back for what felt like 15 years.
ironically my first post apocalypse game that I can remember, was actually CNC 3 tiberium wars and CNC Tiberian sun, although the world there was destroyed by alien crystals, not nukes, still had a lot of the same aesthetics though
“More imaginative like a pandemic”
Wow this aged well….
😳
Earned my Subscription, I needed someone to give their own explanation.
Thank you
Ps, I'll check out half of the golden era games how I already own the first half.
Underrated Channel.
finally someone mentions mad max...such a good game and rage2 was a great expansion of what that game plus doom mechanics could be
Your videos are criminally under-viewed.
This video deserves more views.
🙏
I love this man, this was such a great video. I am always a big fan of the videos you do but getting a history of one of my favourite genres of entertainment was great! The end was like when everyone lent goku their energy to take down freiza lol.
Thanks big man. Much love!
Great video. I too am a Fallout 3 guy, although I also have a ton of love for New Vegas as well. But with the a new entry in the Horizon series having just been announced for Playstation VR2, I might be about to have a new favourite post-apocalyptic game.
Great Video! But! You totally forgot about the game Burntime by Max Design around 1993.
Dude, 'Horizon: Zero Dawn". In my opinion this is true successor to 'Fallout'.
Just found your channel so this comment is pretty late, but I really enjoyed the video! I think the Shin Megami Tensei series also deserves a place on the list. It’s a turn based jrpg set in post apocalyptic Tokyo after a demon invasion. That’s a very simplistic description, but you should check it out!
I just realized...half life 2 was made in 2004...like, it looks so good!!
Woah 8:20-8:35 that’s eerily similar to now
Currently playing Crossout.....
Terminator Future Shock and SkyNet were FPS games, set in the future wars. From the mid 90's
I also recommend to try Insomnia: The ark, one of my all time favorite post apocalypse dystopian game
I used to be a Fallout fan until Bethesda ruined it with Fallout 4. I am a fan of Rage 1. I think it's a game that is very underrated. When I played this game I really enjoyed the graphics at the time and I think they did an outstanding job on what a post-apocalyptic should look like. I think they did a great job nailing the theme of it. I just wish that it was more than just a first person shooter game. However, I was hoping that with Rage 2 they would Implement much more to it than just a first-person shooter but unfortunately that wasn't the case. Regardless I saw great potential and I believe it software has what it takes to actually make a post-apocalyptic RPG game.
Great writeup man.....
Good video
The world is here as long you are here to observe it. The world ends with you...
BattleTanx: Global Assault was a fun game on top of a dying humanity. Don't think it was ground breaking but I remember it fondly
Obsidion knocked it out of the park with NV. Then went on to better it by making their own IP in a similar vein and did it again.
“i’m more of a fallout 3 guy”
oh shit i can hear new vegas supporters’ screams from afar
New Vegas is a superior game. I can admit, but I played fallout 3 at the right time in my life I guess and got attached to it. It's definitely a personal bias, but I plan on making videos about both games to explain lol
@@MrHammers i don’t judge but people might that’s all i’m saying pal
Haha yeah I get ya
@@MrHammers btw now i have the chance to say it, recently discovered your channel and i’m in love with your content keep up the good work i spent my day watching all ur videos
@@MrHammers I feel exactly the same. Fallout 3 was the first RPG I played and It completely blew my socks off. I've played that game more than any other. It actually took awhile for me to warm up to New Vegas (but I love Vegas too dont get me wrong). Even after playing 1 and 2 recently (both fantastic games), theres just something about Fallout 3.
Remnants from the ashes was actually a sequel to a game called Chronos i believe. It had a mechanic where your character would age up one year everytime you died.
first youtuber i ever heard admit they liked fallout 3 more than new vegas. you got a pair of balls on ya! ive never come out to my friends and family about my love of fallout 3.
This was a great video! One of my personal favorites would be Lisa The Painful RPG, it's a pretty neat take on the RPG genre that's takes place after all females become extinct. The story and gameplay is really good and I recommend checking it out
Impact winter and the flames in the flood are good games too
I just really hope Stalker 2 isn’t permanently canceled. I was really looking forward to it.
It's not, they just released a new trailer for it recently. It'll be out at some point!
@@MrHammers I just saw that a few days ago! I’m so excited! I’m on xbox so I can’t play any of the previous games but I’ve been watching a lot of videos on the lore and stuff. Amazing video by the way!
Oh my god, FINALLY. I see so mant videos on youtube about "the history/evolution of (genre) games" and then the video is nothing but tiny clips of games from that genre throughout the years, with no narration, no explanation of the genre or which games shown had the biggest impact, nothing. IMO it's by far the LAZIEST way to go over the history/evolution of a genre, and the videos aren't even worth watching.
So it's an incredible relief to see a video like this one, where you actually go in depth and discuss the games, as well as discussing the genre as a whole
Damn, thank you! That was originally the motivation for doing this type of video, because I'd watch the same ones with just gameplay and have to go research the games on my own. Glad you liked it, thanks for the kind words.
@@MrHammers no problem man, you did a good job on the video, very comprehensive. I liked and subscribed
Missed Dead Island which inspired Dying Light
I kind of liked Fallout brotherhood of steel for the ps2. To me it was fun.
No mention of borderlands? Also chrono trigger from 1995 has a big section of the game set in the post apocalypse
22:46.
Best game soundtrack of the list.
(Why didn't it come when you showed the game?)
I thought about having the soundtracks pop up for some of the games, but it ended up not sounding that great switching audio so frequently so I just put them back to back in no particular order
If you want a good Post-Apocalypse game, check out Frostpunk
Pretty sure WWZ is based in the same world as the book an movie but tells it's own stories while borrowing from both the book an movie
Underrated video at less than 5k views
My favorite genre I have the last us 1 and 2 days gone dying light the evil within in fallout 4 I'm all In
No post apocalyptic game series can ever beat fallout.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. would like a word with you, pal.
@@papaoscarwhiskey9213 stalker is a great game but it has never beaten fallout yet I mean the original game is still pretty incomplete remember?
As a massive stalker fan, fallouts world is better
this channel is so underrated that it not even funny
And now that I think about it, state of decay was kinda apocalyptic too wasn’t it?
What about DEAD RISING ? not all of them were bad. The first one was great and so was 2 . I also liked 4th one alot too
I thought Death Stranding would get a shoutout
My favorite Post-apocalyptic game is Splatoon 🙂
while new vegas is probably the best fallout game in my opinion, fallout 3 is a very respectable pick for favorite. they really nailed a aesthetic that still felt like fallout, but still managed to be very uniquely bethesda. not to mention the Pitt is probably the best expansion in the series.
I think my first apocalyptic game was undead nightmare.... And now days it's unplayable and buggy
Damm i miss it
Miscreated, a great post apocalyptic game. Good PvP, fun PvE and the base building was implemented well and improved steadily. I don't really understand why it wasn't more popular but I suspect it was the mutant enemy's being less preferable to people's Zombie obsession.
Wheres the Project Zomboid love?
why this video doesn't have a higher view count? lol
I feel like you have missed something. One game that comes to mind is Hard Truck Apocalypse / Ex Machina
Another one is The Fall: Last Days of Gaia
GSC game world, not GCS. Their logo is just weird.
Dying light but no mention of dead island?
I'll have to assume you haven't played Kenshi
No resident evil 2??? No dead rising? No killing floor?? No red dead undead nightmare???? What the hell…
Shame cdda wasn't brought up.
Two words. Days Gone
did he forget Dead Rising?
@Alfred Pennyworth then left for dead and a few other games on the list wouldn’t make the cut either. Dead rising very much deserves a spot on the list
Great video. Imo you're missing Nier and Nier automata.
Yeah and Prey.
Yeah, no way I can include every game here, I tried to talk about most games that I have played atleast, unfortunately never played nier.
Is prey post apocalyptic?
@@MrHammers It's kind of a spoiler for Prey but yes it is
Dark Souls is a Post-Apocalypse Video Game
No Resident Evil?
Dead Island?
My favorite post apocalyptic game has got to be fallout 4 because it just has this special place in my heart that can’t be replaced
Great video brought back great memory's but with the real pandemic an how people carried on lol Toilet rolls are the commodity if the world goes to s**t no bottle caps or bullets lmao.
BRO GEARS OF WAR was not named
This War Of Mine is awesome. It definitely has the survival gameplay and environment of a post apoc game. But it's not. The rest of the world lives without a care, yet you and your people are stuck in this hell.
Lol I just got off fallout new Vegas
words
Tlou2 should not be considered a game, is a PC rant without any sort of vision and cool features. Dope video btw. The Road by Cormac McCarthy, brilliant way of storytelling. NV is the dopest.
But does fallout 3 REALLY belong in the “golden era”? Seriously Can someone answer that question.
Absolutely, Fallout 3 is one of the best games at portraying post apocalyptic setting. A ravaged DC, settlements made from abandoned homes and scraps of metal. Whether you like the game or not you can't deny it's setting is nearly perfect
It does,it brought the Fallout series to a wider audience and brought new life to the series.
