  • A look at how we use air; what happens as we move up in range, what is happening in the mouthpiece and horn.

    Wow, that was intense. Thank you for explaining how to recognize the placement of the notes in the staff. the rest is actually something that I know is going to help progress, these things I did not know. I have been struggling with all of this time, now I'll be able to correct the process. Thanks very much!

    The tip about not filling up too much helped me a ton! I didn’t even realize I was doing more harm than good with that until watching this video. Thanks!

    good information Rufftips i even used a balloon and putted it on my lead pipe and i notice playing the low range and pedal range the balloon inflated faster and even more as i got louder, on the higher range and extreme it inflates but very little because the low notes use faster air, high notes too but we blow the air differently when we change resigters

      Michael,
      I was just talking with a colleague about that. I have some ideas how to present that. Time willing I will do a video about endurance next week. This is an interesting facet of trumpet playing. I will do my best to formulate a video that helps players approach this part of playing.

    So I think I'm having problems with my air support, especially moving to the upper register,somewhere around E above high C. Feels like I'm really tightening up to the point I'm actually not moving the air correctly. As of lately the bottom third of the muscles around my ribs are sore like in working out in the gym sore. Is that an indication of doing something wrong or actually using new muscles to get the air support I need which is causing soreness?

    • @Rufftips
      @Rufftips  Před 6 lety +1

      Britt Wright This is an excellent question and I plan on doing a video focusing on support. As with other aspects of trumpet playing I think that the results we get usually define whether we are doing something correct or not. It is difficult to say if it is the support mechanism that is not working correctly therefore you’re trying even harder and creating the soreness in your muscles or if there something else blocking you from letting the air do it’s job. Support mechanism certainly can become tired but I have never had it really become sore like a full on work out in a gym. There may be a combination of exaggerated support mechanism Usage and not allowing the air to flow freely in play here. I would experiment with going into the upper register playing soft and then adding a crescendo to see if the air is still being allowed to activate the buzz freely. I will try to get a video of next week that discusses support in depth. Best Jon

    Do you have any advice for endurance? Because a big problem for me is that after a while the portion of my lips outside of the mouthpiece start become extremely loose and start to push out, allowing air to escape. Since our marching band, pep band, and just band class, we play very frequently, it becomes more pronounced. During marching band, we usually have a five-ten minute gap between playing, and no matter how much I do loose buzzing, it will do that for the rest of the game

    The overtones in a tone are ALWAYS integer multiples of the fundamental pitch. It is impossible to have tonal overtones out of tune. (That is: They are in tune with the fundamental.) The harmonic series of a particular instrument depends on the acoustics of that instrument.
    Also; tonal "overtones" are rarely at the same frequency as resonance frequencies of the instrument.

      @@Rufftips Yes. Gap is one variable that affects the acoustics of an instrument. That is what I meant regarding the harmonic series of a particular instrument. But "overtones" are always in tune with the fundamental of a pitch played. Even a "bad" tone has overtones that are in tune, they are just the wrong "mix".

    • @Rufftips
      @Rufftips  Před 4 lety

      Darryl Jones I would postulate that if you have a bad tone you’re not playing in the center of pitch you are somehow not where the horn wants to naturally sound. This would imply that you’ve bent pitch away from the pitch center of the instrument therefore that fundamental is in a in a position that would allow overtones to be misplaced as well. We can also get it
      Into some crazy discussion about even temperament. Pretty simple to compare baroque instrument ensembles To modern instrument ensembles and hear the difference in pitch and color. A lot of discussion can be had here

    • @darryljones9208
      @darryljones9208 Před 4 lety

      @@Rufftips One can also play a bad tone perfectly in tune with the resonant frequency of the note played. There is more to a good sound than simply playing in the center of the resonance. But I think no one would disagree that it sure helps.

    • @Rufftips

      russell straight It is usually when we can’t play with control or we can,t get the next higher note or our sound stops. Also you may feel like you’re working really hard. This video might help. czcams.com/video/13wyUXZj1X8/video.html
