Great stuff Ruff! I've taken a handful of lessons via Skype with Jim Manley. What he has taught me has blown my mind. It is all counterintuitive. So inspiring to hear Sergei and Rafael and Jim play. You need to write a book my friend!

Yes, this video helps me understand the best concepts from great players all in one compilation. Thanks Jon,... personally keeping focus from day to day is what I need to practice on now.

Couple of thoughts. I don't think how a big breath may or may not affect your speaking voice has any correlation to expelling the air through a brass instrument. The only way I can, for example, get through the Reich Abblasen is to take a monster breath.
As for the notion of breathing high or low, the only place air goes is into your lungs.

Hi Jon, I have a question regarding range. For some time now, I have been trying to find ways to be more efficient. One way I have found was to back off and focus my lips. When I do this I can usually squeak out a double G, however, my range around B and high C sounds airy and weak. I am not sure if it just needs development or this is a faulty setting. The way I naturally go higher is louder and stronger around the high C's, however, I can rarely get above a high Eb and I am using more effort. My question is whether I should try to develop the easier setting with airy B's and C's or should I stick to trying to use less tension with my normal one? Thanks, John.

This is not surprising. So what you need to do is add air support to the equation. Easy to say hard to describe. The embouchure that you use to get the high G is working but needs a bit more energy (but not masses of air). So how do you get that feel. I would work on getting a full nice mezzo Forte sound up to high C. Slow quarter note slurred scales up to there using a good deal of control on the accent. Your sound should not get softer or smaller. This may require more energy from your mid section (abs region) a slight flex to ad support. You should feel this start to engage at the top of the staff and very subtly increase as you ascend. Slurring helps control the air in a more linear manner. Once you have good control of the volume and support now add one half step each week. In theory you should be at a nice controlled high G in seven weeks. You should also do slurred arpeggios, this will help with control as the upward leap of a 4th (5 to 1) requires more control. Once you have this feel and control figured out you can bring in a bit more volume in the form of a small… did I say small, crescendo as you ascend. Only think louder not more air. Your embouchure should not change and you should only experience more tension or flex in your mid section area that creates the support. Everything; chest, shoulders, face should feel the same only the support component change should be felt. Once this is figured out start working out of books like Earl D Irons, Max Schlossberg and Charles Colin. You will be well on your way. Best, Jon

Rufftips Hey Jon, I have been trying this out now for a week and my upper range is coming along. I do have a couple of issues, however. My high range up to C is starting to develop, but my middle lower register embouchure feels weird and i am starting to lose my tone quality. I have noticed that I manipulate my lower jaw slightly to ascend in this new embouchure as well. I was wondering if I should switch back to my old embouchure, which feels good and has a good tone, or if I should continue on this one? Another issue is that I play lead in my Marching band and our director decided to give us a song with high C's in it. I always find myself having to switch to my natural setting to play them with enough precision. Thanks for your time. John

I am not sure you if you have seen this video but I highly recommend doing flexibility studies, scales and arpeggios or chords through out all registers.
Here is the vid on different things to work on throughout register.

Here is the flexibility study vid

I have no idea exactly how or what you are practicing but I would start with the 2nd video and do these everyday for a month then every other day forever. You must alternate range studies and you must practice throughout your entire register when you practice. Best, Jon
