Big Sean is an artist who hails from Detroit, Michigan. Artists like Royce da 5'9 & even Danny Brown also come from this area, however, they've managed to develop their own sounds and shake up the world of music in a way Big Sean has not be able to yet. Why is that? Lets discuss it.

He used to be complete trash but his delivery, flows and lyricism have really improved over the past couple of years. He can still have a few corny bars here and there but he at least HAS some bars now.

I think the reason why people think Big Sean trash because 1. from day one he's been underrated because of being under Kanye's wing and being considered a lesser version of him and then he finds a way to differentiate himself from Kanye while still keeping the style that he started with. Yes I agree Big sean doesn't have any special thing that separates him from other rappers but I find him to be relatable depending on what point you are in you're life, That's why I really enjoyed the I Decided album because it resonated and still resonates with me.
He isn't trash at all, bur the way he delivers some of his bars just sounds "high school". His voice in particular. He has some good ass punchlines but if he doesn't make the shot, then it comes off as forced. The other reason is that he can sometimes try to seem like a street nigga when we all know he isn't really gonna pull up on you. Think about this too. He can send a message or a concept, but its not like he has a view that breaks the ground. You listen to Kendrick and its a full song idea that makes you really think about the situations he puts you in (The Art of Peer Pressure). You will probably sit down and look through the comments of that video and see peoples own little anecdotes about their troubled youths. I don't know a Sean song othet than Jump Out The Window that really makes me think his mind has more to offet than others. I think what im trying to say is that he seems to try to hard to seem like a well of knowledge when being a storyteller, and tries to hard to sound like he has been in every women. He's got technical ability and some bars, but he isn't anything special as a character of rap.

Big Sean continuously sells tons of albums and performs in front of large crowds. We can debate about the content of the music and that's fine. But big Sean's commercial impact is proven and here to stay. Hence big Sean has appeal to people.

I don't think he's top tier - I Decided is his only good project. But I don't think people realize how essential he actually is to the modern state of hip-hop. Drake, Kanye, and Cudi have all given credit to Sean in terms of flow and rhyme scheme. He might not have an abundant personality but he's a lot more essential to hip-hop than people give him credit for.

So because 1 freestyle he isn't trash? And majority of freestyles are rehearsed or an unreleased song? I decided had a few good tracks, TO ME, but nobody talks about his album anymore, or any of those tracks. If he doesn't mention Detroit, his grandma or his "bitch" he has nothing to say. His punchlines are cringe and corny majority of the time and he calls people out then waits years to respond just to keep his "talent" relevant.
SERIOUSLY somebody help me understand why people don't see this... Big Sean to me is like a poor man's Drake, and he has some bars that are weak or unnecessary, but he also has great lyrics and DOES offer something slightly different than others in his music. Something that has become increasingly focused through the years.
Since his debut album, he has gotten better and better at giving people who really listen almost like an instruction manual for success. If you watch his interviews, all dude does is consume philosophy and religious texts, and it shows in his music... yeah it doesn't always come off as deep and I like it because it doesn't have to be complex to be true, and anybody can listen to the lyrics and gain insight on their own lives with pop appeal.
To me, that's the point for listeners on songs like Voices in My Head/Stick to the Plan and I feel like his last album should've been called I Decided (to hit my haters over the head with this niche I've slowly carved out for myself).
Listening to Big Sean's music can put you in the right mindframe and propel you to succeed ... if you let it.

John Lennon I agree, Drake stole Sean's flow, he said so himself and Sean gives the most effort out of the two of them in 2017... but sonically, Drake's got the better beats, entertainment wise on lyrics Drake's still got him beat because of all the iconic features and songs on his albums, and that's what rappers that are in the Drake-style box are judged on these days. I agree with Shawn Cee in that way... if this exact album came out in 2015, he'd definitely be in most people's top 5 by now. But everything sounds a bit dated. But he called it "I Decided." I'm glad he found his niche, I think he'll get what he really wants if he goes back to the studio and comes up with new kinds of beats to back him up, kinda like how Vince Staples did, and then releases like an EP next year.

The thing that frustrates me about Big Sean is that I know he can really spit and can go into deeper topics. He just doesn't want to(or at least it isn't a priority to him). I watched some of his lesser viewed freestyles and the guy can really go off on a lot of stuff. Knowing this just frustrates when he comes out with another mediocre song. I actually thought No More Interviews was one of his better songs because he really talked about some topics. He has moments of brilliance in my opinion but moments aren't gonna keep him respected. It will more than likely just remind some of his naysayers or apologists that he can really go off.

Big Sean is in my top 10 rappers. His album dark sky paradise is his best project to me. He knows how to let people know what's on his mind. He got an interesting story when he decides to give one.

His detroit mixtape is still one of my favorite projects from any artist.

Big Sean has no distinct sound. He has never created a world or a sound for himself after 5 albums. Kendrick, DRAKE and Cole all have a sound that is very curated.
The problem is he doesn't have a good album, or Mixtape. He can rap, but so can canibus, and not constructing a good album is one of canibus' criticisms. So why should Big Sean get a pass for making Bad albums when He as a lyricist isn't even that impressive. And he can be corny sometimes.

Big Sean was dismissed as a top rapper ever since Control was released. Since then, he's always been an afterthought when people ask "Who's the best in the game right now?".

Both their last albums (4YEO and I Decided) were concept albums, and both their previous releases (FHD and DSP) were introspective albums. And both of their releases all before the last 2 were more commercial sounding. Do you think it's because of their images that people view Big Sean worse than J Cole?
