    White Star Captains: "That Vorlon ship has massive forward firepower, what should we do?" "Let's approach from the front instead of flanking and pecking it to death." "Sounds good to me."
    And one of the Minbari Captains thought the same thing too. The second one was smart and fired his gun at full power from close range. The earth ship is clumsy so it had to take the shot available.
    Visually it is impressive, but for your next film I'd suggest someone to plot out fleet tactics for you.

    • @edlaprade
      @edlaprade Před 8 lety +14

      +Todd Kes That's exactly what I was thinking for most of the battle. That, and concentrate your fire, which is something you pretty much never see in sci fi space battles.

    • @ajb695
      @ajb695 Před 7 lety +3

      Heh. You've never seen the epic battle in the B5 episode "Between the Darkness and the Light." Some stuff you definitely wouldn't do in space fleet tactics, but at one point, boy do they concentrate their firing! Still for my money one of the best space battle sequences ever put on film (along with the "Severed Dreams" episode that Maria Locke made reference to above).

    I feel the Vorlon ships were more advanced then represented here.. they were thought of as virtually unbeatable. I feel even with the one Minbari cruiser and the White Stars drawing fire while the other two capital ships and their attending fleets flanked the dreadnought, this fight wouldn't have been this easy.

      You really can't say it's the ISA fleet because it's only Whitestars, Sharlins and an Omega. At best, it's a Combined Minbari/EA/Rangers taskforce. Without a few Drazi, Vree, Brakiri and Narn ships in the mix you can't really say it's even the nascent ISA fleet of the 2nd Shadow War.

    Things I don't understand about sci fi space battles:
    Why the ships are always flying towards each other, and almost always oriented upwards in the same plane.
    Why the weapons are so weak on ships that have propulsion systems that would exceed Earth's power output.
    Why energy weapons would ever miss.

    • @ImperativeGames
      @ImperativeGames Před 7 lety

      In B5 they actually not always fly so stupid as in other franchises. But the logic always is, they are kinda on bombing run.
      By having and changing high speed they're trying to dodge plasma, kinetic, rocket weapons, which all have quite slow speed (only lasers and other *direct* energy weapons have speed of light (it's speed is also finite and they also could be dodged sometimes, if you use gravity-based sensors and distance is huge for example)).
      Continuusly changing acceleration they can change their projected trajectory, so enemy would have to guess where to fire.
      With weak weapons I completely agree. Stupid plot device so ships could be damaged but heroes would valiantly continue to fight despite injuries, etc,etc,etc
      And even infinite-speed weapons could miss if you consider crazy ECM-like tech future can bring ^^
      For example, they think it's the right spot in the Universe, but enemy ship mostly is in another dimension and stuff =)
      Not sure how to put it in English correctly.... Too tired. So:
      Воспринимаемая позиция врага из-за разной размерности пространства не соответствует позиции врага в его локальной размерности пространства
      "The perceived position of the enemy due to the different dimensions of space does not correspond to the position of the enemy in his local space dimension"

      Not true... a wing of white stars knocked out a vorlon listening post and that thing would have been armed to the teeth just like a dreadnaught... not to mention it has a limited firing arc and any ships getting behind it would cut it up and we all know how fast a white star can 180 and bank... (which I note wasnt a tactic used in this video) but I agree the ship would never be alone it would have support vessels with it to defe4nd its vulnerable points...

    Major problem here... that class of ship in the show is shown to have shielding. The very first shot fired in this hits the hull. Given the shields took a direct hit from a similar class of Shadow vessel in the show, I don't think a Whitestar would punch through like it didn't exist.

    I feel it would be churlish to criticize it excessively, so I'll just say that the general feel did not match up well with the actual show and it's probably because of the cinematography being vastly different, as well as the greater length of shots and of the scene. My personal opinion ;) and it definitely has a unique feel due to that, just not that authentic B5 feel I expected.

    Ever notice how they had to exit hyperspace to engage with each other rather than fight within hyperspace. Both fleets can be lying in hyperspace ready to enter the battle and yet not even be aware of each other yet individual ships can remain close enough together to see and communicate with each other and they even had episodes where they searched for spaceships lost in hyperspace.

    • @War450
      @War450 Před 2 lety +1

      The show explains (and shows) that hyperspace massively screws with weapons. They flat out say in the show that if you fire your shot's just as likely to turn around and hit you as it is to hit the enemy. It's impossible to predict where your weapons fire will go in hyperspace thus it's too dangerous to try and fight there.

    Much more likely: White Stars come in as scouts, the Dreadnought comes in and engages while the White Stars take evasive action. The White Stars relay the Vorlon's position to the Minbari, who form jump-points right on the Vorlon's ass, dealing heavy damage. The Omega class launches missiles at the damaged Vorlon ship while the White Stars and the two Sharlin cruisers target damaged sections with their energy weapons. A couple of nukes fired into the heart of the Vorlon ship do the trick, and everyone jumps out alive.

      ***** You only saw like two battles involving the Vorlon warship, that isn't much, especially when you compare the numerous battles we have seen of Shadow warships, so of course never saw a Vorlon Ship go under without First One aid. But that doesn't mean they can't be destroyed, especially if they come under enough fire, Sheriden said it himself no ship is unbeatable, everything has its weaknesses and limits.
      The Shadows were on par with the Vorlons an if their major warships can be destroyed after being hit enough times, so can a Vorlon

    • @Berzerkam

      The shadow warships shown in the show are not on par with Vorlon ships are vorlon use their true ship all the time while the Shadows used dumbed down version of their ships against the young races. Why were those white stars sent ahead to be picked off one by one? That fleet knew it was facing a formidable opponent, so there only chance, would be to fight as a combined fleet. Otherwise, why form a fleet in the first place? This video, shows quite the opposite occuring. They really had to no business winning. The visuals were good, but the animation and movement was fairly wooden.

    Does anybody here remember how the first US - Iraq War ended? Horrible bloodbath for the Iraqi army, which was barely able to inflict casualties on the American forces at all. In that case, the technological gap was one of a few decades. But Earth force ships are going to win a battle against an enemies millions of years more advanced? Science fiction is interesting. I'm not going to argue about whether or not that outcome is true to the show, but it's certainly wildly implausible.

      Many who have watched the B5 show a dozen times a dozen, Knows very well that the time The Shadows lost a battle, a Human was sent 1,000 Years Into The Past To Cut their military Might down To A manageable size, a Telepath jammed one of their ships, they were ambushed by the Vorlons, they were ambushed by Sheridan alliance of ships who had even more Telepaths and They were lured to a well prepared battle-field, WHERE they were force to engage another First-One, as well as an Alliance of lesser advance ships, where the Vorlons got their Planet Killer Toast By Other First-Ones....But I recall Once The Shadows Planet Killer Came into Play, It was Game Over....Even The Almighty Other First Ones Did Not fuck with That Planet Killer.
      And Dont Bring Up That Water down Version The Drakh Used In Call To Arms ( Suckers barely Knew How To Operate The Thing and One Test On Daltron VII and They thought they were Ready)...If It werent For Those Vorlon/Minbari/Human Hybrid ships-( Victory and Excalibur) Earth was Fuck Six Ways From Sunday....

      Yeah, I've often thought the same thing. Consider, the Mimbari were involved in taking out the Shadows the first time when it was about 1250 A.D. in earth time. Considering the Mimbari were fighting battles in space when human development was in the Middle Ages, well...………..They'd be so far ahead of us it isn't even funny. And the Vorlons were superior in tech to the Mimbari. it's just another one of those things where it's best not to think too much. Kind of like the Matrix movies, they made no sense to me. What was the point? The earth's surface was devastated beyond repair. So what was the purpose of the war? Free people...……..for what? Where are they going to go once the machines were defeated?

    personally i thought the tactics the EA fleet used were amateur, as the vorlon ship was like a dog only dangerous from the front, i'd have attacked all ships at once from the sides and rear, hence suffered no loses..good vid though

      If you remember the episode where Sharidan and Ivanova visited Kosh's ship on B5, you'd also remember the ship had the ability to fire in all directions (Sharidan's chest, for example). None of that ability by Vorlon ships was shown here.

  • @tarekokail
    @tarekokail Před 6 lety

    White Stars were co-developed by the Minbari and the Vorlons; White Stars are tough for their size. With telepaths aboard to disable a Shadow cruiser, a White Star could destroy one. The same tactic would not work on a Vorlon ship; however, Vorlon ships are vulnerable to wolfpack or mass flanking attacks. Their main weapon has a 270 degree arc of fire, approximately, but it does not have any weapons that cover its rear arc. The main difficulty fighting Vorlon ships are their ability to absorb and dissipate the energy from most weapons and their vastly superior ECM/ECCM/Fire control. Against a true EA fleet, composed of Omegas, Starfuries, and Thunderbolts, a Vorlon dreadnaut would wipe most of them, if not all of them, from the skies before it could be overwhelmed. Against this mixed Minbari/Ranger fleet, a Vorlon dreadnaut operating alone would be destroyed. I'm not even counting the single Omega because frankly, it contributed nothing to the battle.

    • @lasergays
      @lasergays Před 6 lety

      Tarek Okail we never actually saw the vorlon dreadnaught getting killed in the series so we can’t be sure what it takes to kill it. We did see in one battle how well it was able to absorb a shadow vessel’s laser with its front laser. The question is what if it was hit from it’s backside, how much energy can it’s organic skin absorb. I’m sure it’s much more (many orders of magnitude) than what a white star can handle.
