      Fit, fit, fit! I cannot emphasise this enough to my friends. Wear the right length for your height and size up, it's easier to get a bigger size tailored than to be seeing all your lumps and bumps squeezed in the wrong places. No baggy dresses either girls, they look awful on anyone unless you're tall and reed thin. No baggy all over tops and trousers too.

    At 81 on my last birthday, I have decided I do not have time to get or be old. While I am sitll blessed with enjoying good health, I am baking French bread almost every week (that I share with friends), stay active in my church, am busily involved in Family History (which keeps my cognitive skills active). Iin summer I grow a small garden, mow my lawn, and tend the flower gardens. In addition to these things I keep my own house, do my own shopping etc. Thank you for your tips on how to dress, act and feel attractive, it is more than just not looking old and frumpy, it is confidence in who we are and who we have become.

    I'm nearly 65 and I was watching this...while wearing a new paisley dress. To me, it is not the pattern that is aging: it is the quality, colours, size and placement of the pattern, style, cut and length that determine how it looks. I bought it from an English shop that sells classic designs and fabric patterns primarily for the 30-40 year old age group. How a woman accessorises the dress is also important as to whether something is aging (jewellery, shoes, handbag). Finally, make-up and hairstyling can make something aging or not. I am very wary of set "rules" about what is aging or not (apart from the non-no of polyester elastic waist trousers and the unforgivable leggings and loose shirts lol). This is just my opinion and my own experience so to each his/her own! Happy New Year to all 😁

      I was just going to point that out. Also, even just what you pair an item with can make a huge difference. I like the paisley print but always had a problem finding anything in the print - somehow I didn't see it much where I live in the past 35 years or so that I've been buying my own clothing. Earlier than that, the pattern was used mostly on scarves that the older generation wore (people born about a hundred years ago). Maybe that's why it's associated (at least by ppl whose grandparents were born a century ago) with "old age". Just recently though I've seen a whole collection of clothing for "young women" (20-30 yo) in a popular chain. The quality is lacking... But I had purchased a silk scarf with a paisley print months earlier and I finally started wearing it. I mostly dress "smart casual", wear my hair long, and I wore the scarf in a sort of a nonchallant manner. People still treated me as if they thought I was much younger than I am (I'm used to it but don't necessarily like it). The scarf didn't make me look old or even older. I actually now want to dress "older" because I'm too annoyed by men younger than me by 15-20 years treating me as if I'm their classmate... Well, the scarf didn't give me that "maturing effect". The paisley dress in the video was just a bad design, I've seen some fantastic haute couture paisley designs (out of my price range, unfortunately) - they looked fresh and modern.

      @@michalinaokrent6672 Very well said. Also there are things that are classic/always look good that could be seen (incorrectly) as "aging" - a paisley scarf, tweed clothing, a camel coat, cardigans, pearl necklace, etc. To me, these look good at any age (depending on styling them too).

    • @kittymetal186
      @kittymetal186 Před 4 měsíci +23

      I should have added that an important way to avoid looking old is good, consistent skin care. I am nearly 65 but I have no facial wrinkles (my eyes are a little bit hooded though) which has knocked many years off my actual age! I have never had Botox nor any cosmetic or surgical procedure. I no longer wear foundation. Heavy foundation, powder and concealers can be very aging.

      Agree. Here in the US, often a paisley dress reads upper crust, old money, the horsey set, preppy, etc., but not the age of the wearer. And it's a popular, classic print for beautiful silk or wool scarves often worn by both men and women with a gorgeous cashmere or tweed coat. I'd bet this is also true in Britain.

    I walk on hills for a couple of miles per day with my dog, and have found the anorak to be by far the most practical choice for moderately cool weather, because I can store what I need (water, dish, dog treats, leash, an extra jacket, gloves) in the large pockets and thus not need to carry a pack. I do not think that if a garment is super-practical that aging has anything to do with it. I also think that while geometric designs like stripes suit some people (especially those who are taller and angular), other people have body styles/essences that are much more suited to something softer and that florals can be appropriate for them and look good on them. And that age has nothing to do with it.

    • @druidriley3163

      😊Yes, I live in the Verdugo Mtns. Love hiking up & down my steep hilly streets. Still trying to improve gait & recover full strength in my left leg 〰️after having broken it (& sprained ankle) followed by two surgeries. Sometimes I'll borrow my neighbor's puppy🐶 for company.
      👟Trainers or hiking🥾 boots & a lightweight anorak are required. As you said, the latter is perfect to hold phone, keys, chapstick, mittens, sunnies, scarf, etc. Should you get warm, you can easily tie it around your waist too.
      😉Of course, I stay away from tri-color pastel versions that Marie-Ann featured😵‍💫. That would definitely push me into frumpy grandma territory👵. I typically stick w/brighter blues or black to coordinate w/my other sporty gear. I do have a couple red anoraks for when feeling fierce❤.

    I see Anna Wintour wearing floral dresses frequently, and I would hesitate to characterize her as out-of-style, frumpy, or looking old for her actual age (74). These kinds of broad characterizations like "stripes are better than florals" or "don't wear a design with more than two colors" are a lot less helpful than suggestions that what really matters is dressing in quality garments that are suited to your own personal characteristics. And that many different types of styles can be attractive at any age if worn in the right way, by the right person, I think.

    This was the wittiest video ever! I laughed from the beige sheep all the way to the end. My tips for dressing younger: Don't hang on to the style you embraced in your 20s (if you're now 50 or 60+). People tend to hang on to the era in which they were their happiest, and I get that, but ... don't). That frosted pink lipstick (which I loved) and those poofy bangs moved on, and so should we. Second tip - in addition to our skin tone changing over time, our silhouette changes as well - even for the fittest among us. Dress for your current shape. Wear updated glasses - both prescription and sunshades.

Never wore a dress in paisley or floral, but I say to each her own. Why couldn't a sweater in paisley or floral (minimal print) be paired with a solid color pair of trousers, or a skirt? Leggings don't look good on anyone, and should be saved for the gym. I also have no quarrel with the anorak style jacket. I don't want to opt for a trench style raincoat on a daily basis. Besides, that style of coat won't keep me warm in winter. I keep my raincoats (trench style) for rainy days when I'm wearing a skirt.

In Winter, I like a nice long wool coat for dressy events, my short wool peacoat for casual, faux fur hooded coat for very snowy days, and the real deal for dressy events.
      I agree with you about women of any age who dress in a sloppy manner, as if they don't matter. Baggy clothes, sweatpants, leggings, gym shoes, unkempt hair, not even a bit of lipstick just doesn't convey a smart, chic woman. I like most suggestions. Anorak and windbreaker are essentials where I live. Taking the dogs for walks or to the off leash area, going camping, sledding or snow tubing with the grandkids, skating, hiking in the River Valley and thing like that are not done with a trench coat. Those coats I wear when I run errands in the city, go out to eat, meet friends for coffee or go to church.

    Wearing oversized tops and oversized pants at the same time. Oh no.
    I unfortunately did not wear sunscreen in my younger years and so now my decollate has sun damage. It really ages me, so I no longer wear lower v neck shirts.

    For Brits I would add - anything from M&S!!! It’s like a magnet (due to a very impressive PR department) for women over 50, who then bemoan the fact that they feel invisible - well, of course you do when every third woman’s wearing the same clothes as you (and your matching husband). I never set foot in the place and am complimented virtually every week by people who think I’m in my early to mid 40’s when I’m actually 68! Listen to this lovely woman - she’s a class act and not just in the wardrobe dept.

      Just because you aren't wearing the latest fashion doesn't mean you're not taking pride in your appearance. Today's social media is too pushy with gotta have, gotta have . . . . what not to wear if you don't want to look frumpy or old. People today are just trying to get by and spending money on things just to stay current with fashion is a waste of time and money in my opinion. If someone doesn't like you because of the clothes you wear or because they aren't the latest style, then that's THEIR problem, not yours.

    Principalement je suis d'accord avec vous sauf au sujet des motifs floraux. Une chemise en original liberty art fabrics est un evergreen. D'ailleurs, le motif liberty est omniprésent: de la collection bébé jusqu'à la colection femme/homme et c'est vraiment en bon goût. En ce qui concerne des "floral pants" ça se défend sur une personne mince et en tant qu'un seul élément du outfit. Au sujet des chaussures florales je ne les écarterais pas si les autres pièces du look sont unis.
    Généralement parlant, ce qui nous rend vieux/vielle c'est une corpulence XXL, une posture bossue et des vêtements mal adaptés à notre taille (trop amples ou trop petits)

    • @edennis8578
      @edennis8578 Před 4 měsíci

      It depends on where you live. Liberty prints have never been terribly fashionable in the US. I doubt that the French give two pins.

      @otyliaostrowska-jouie5455 Před 4 měsíci

      We are talking about the French style à la française. The Liberty was and is still present in French populars boutiques: Aigle, Cyrillus, Caroll, Burton, fil à fil. I have bought there my items from original liberty art fabrics. However the liberty is not so popular in France as marinières are. There are some marks that are specialised in marinières.

    New subscriber here; I just ‘checked in’ & ended up watching the whole video! I agree with everything you mentioned, absolutely💯
    I’ve noticed through my journey in fashion, (which is definitely low-key) I’ve toned everything down, especially make-up. I find make-up makes many beautiful women look older…it settles into their fine lines, accentuating them…
    There are so many variables; quality of fabric, color, and silhouette. I remember visiting a consignment shop in Santa Monica, California, and I couldn’t believe the beautiful garments I found in perfect condition for pennies! For I am grateful, when wealthy women discard beautiful garments.⭐️
    My ex-husband is French. He’s a pastry chef and a natural, when it comes to fashion! He taught me so much when I was 22! Even though he’s my “ex” we are still very good friends♥️♥️always.
    We were very young, & chose completely different paths…

    I've gone on a mini dress spree the past few months, with very opaque and cable tights mind. I love the abstract print one and the brown houndstooth (with the hip pockets/large gold buttons). I was so young when that look was in that it doesn't seem 'antique' to me :)
    I've also gotten to the point where I don't need to impress anyone, just to wear clothes which make me happy, and which make others smile :)

    Happy new year, MarieAnne. This past year I turned 72, and I've had a desire to revitalize my style. I started this summer. I think I made some good choices. I enjoyed this video even though I see some surprises in my closet, like paisley sweaters. I can't help liking paisley. For those of us who like walking in the woods or on trails no matter what the weather IMHO I might like to wear an anorak as appropriate. In the city I like my London Fog trench coat or wool coat. Anyway, your suggestions are great. I lost my suitcase in Munich Airport filled with winter clothes for a trip to the alpine Christmas markets and now I'm rethinking and replacing.
