So yes, Deus Ex is literally the greatest PC game of all time. It's been voted that by PC gamer's users and it's been named that by a couple other outlets too. It's not an Immersive sim, it's THE Immersive Sim. Deus ex has the story, worldbuilding, emergent gameplay, and all the other odds and ends like the meme-ability that makes this classic a pillar of modern game design.
Yeah, Deus Ex can get kinda hokey at times, but at least to me it's funny and endearing so it's a net win. People have taken this goofiness and ran with it with things such as the insanity that is the Deus Ex Malkavian Mod or that one guy who made all those Soy food videos. If you wanna try out the Malkavian Mod for yourself here it is. (warning: actually insanity)

Dues ex is 20 years old by now, so just in case you need help to get it going on your PC here's PCGamingWiki's page on Deus Ex www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Deu...
As I mentioned in the ad read, here's the plain english TOS and the warrant canary page. This is kinda new for me, that is getting a big name sponsor, butr I'm still trying to vet people and companies as best as I can because what I choose to endorse is a reflection of my integrity and how I treat you all

What do you mean? There is no such augmentation.

Paul Denton isn’t supposed to pass out like that lmfao
So usually when you help break him out he leaves the hotel on his own and thanks you
Then he shows up in Hong Kong, and assists you as the game goes on
Yeah this was an odd part in the video since you can totally win that fight and it can work fine / not bug out like it did in his playthrough.
Back when 200.000 sold copies in half a year was considered a success.
It was a success. This was a PC project, and at the time the game required a decent mid range gaming PC. Back then, although PC's were light years ahead of the consoles, they were still mainly an office / study machine that you did your emails with and possibly a bit of solitaire.
Also we don't equate copies sold with quality. If we did, Katy Perry's "ROAR!" would be a masterpiece, while Mozarts Great Mass would be some pulp shit in comparison.
Just cos Playstation and XBOX sell millions of copies of Tombraider 27, COD 74 and Battlefield 109 ... doesn't make them "good games".
@@annematthews1837I don't think JoQan was saying it wasn't a success. Just pointing out the difference between now and then.
PC gaming was an incredibly niche hobby in the 90's...
absolteuly nothing like it is today.
well, 40 dollars in 2000. so 40 x 200,000 in that times values.
That's not Paul's body you're carrying. It's Jo Jo Fine.
I believe you can actually save Paul if you die before him when you get apprehended. If you do, he really will be waiting for you in Hong Kong
@Jonny B Yes, don't exit the window else he dies
Paul dying despite you fighting of the attackers sounds like a bug. I have saved Paul in the past and he thanks you and it changes parts of the story.
Yep, I remember this being a thing on the PS2 version too. You had to fight off the guys coming into his apartment + the guys in the lobby then follow some dialog choices in a certain way iirc
It happens if you leave through the window regardless of anything
@@electricmiragemedia 7n0
it's tied specifically to whether or not you leave via the window, if you leave via the lobby, even if you leave some alive, he will survive. Even if you yourself get clapped he will survive. It sounds like Paul actually died in the fight in Charlatan, but he was showing as unconscious
Yup, it's literally just which door you leave through. Nothing else matters. Bring TNT from the hostage situation, kill everyone in the building, but leave through window: Paul dies. Cloak and run past all the attackers, walk through the front door: Paul lives. You can even just hide in the closet or the secret room and let Paul kill everyone his own damn self, he's still got plot armor.
13:53 Dude... That isn't Paul. That is JoJo. They don't look even remotely similar. This whole segment of the video is just wrong
I Was looking for this comment
16:53 In the sequel (Deus Ex: Invisible War) they confirm that the entire machine was, in fact, fully stocked with lemon-lime. Gunther's conspiracy theory was right. That said, though, in certain emails you can find written by Gunther clearly show he's not very elegant with typing so he may have butter-fingered the lemon-lime button either way. > "Might I sugest agin, a skul-gun for my head."
They made his idea into an augment in cruelty squad
thats not pauls body, you were carrying around the unconscious body of JoJo fine. (you knocked him out earlier saving gilbert and sandra renton). If you manage to clear the entire hotel lobby without paul dying he will thank you and tell you to go to the subway while he slips out with smuggler.
Can we appreciate that warren spector also co-wrote what is considered one of, if not the best modules for paranoia to date. Also considering in paranoia you're called "troubleshooters" I can only imagine the game he had in mind had very similar concepts.
That thumbnail with JC with a hand inside the SOY is just art
I literally have just been playign it, for the first time all the way through. It really is fantastic and actually kind of shocking how ahead of it's time it really was. If this came out now it could easily hold it's own as one of the top games of the year without even changing the core game.
You can also hear Deus Ex as Day o' Sex
I've never pronounced it like that...
I replayed Deus Ex in 2020 and found a new way to get around on Liberty Island .
Every time I played it , I found something new in the game .
lol, what are you talking about? That isn't Paul's body that is Jojo Fine. Paul is literally flagged as Invincible in the 'Ton hotel fight & you can win it. The real issue with that sequence is the flag which determines the outcome is based on the exit you use. You have to exit through the front door not the window for Paul to survive.
Also, that isn't what a sequence break is, that is just the game not clearing what JC is carrying after loading, hell the game doesn't even clear your inventory until a second after you are placed in jail meaning you can drop everything & pick it up in prison without having to go pick it up from the MJ12 armoury, which is a sequence break. Which Deus Ex is full of, anytime you use a keycode from your own memory instead of finding it, that's a sequence break, the biggest being entering the restricted area of Versalife with the keycode you get from Tracer Tong before you have ever met him.
The soundtrack is available with the GOG GOTY version in case anyone wants to find it.
Even with these errors I was going to thumbs up the video but you didn't kill Louis Pan so gonna have to hit the thumbs down, what a shame.
I only played the OG after Human Revolution and damn it holds up even today. Especially with a couple of mods

Indeed comrade! And the man with the dapper beard is cool too I hope fritz brings him in vids more
I'll always remember 16yr old me doing the mission where you're sneaking round Dentons office, I was going in all the vents trying different ways not to get seen, going in every room including the ladies' toilets, looking for different paths, and finally doing it without raising the alarm.
Then speaking with his superior and him telling me to "stop sneaking round the ladies' toilets"🤣 lol my mind was blown how does he know, that's just one of many things they really did think of everything amazing game deserves every bit of praise heaped on it.
As do your videos keep up the great work
Games like this are near impossible today because folks like John Romero don't get to tell capable developers to make their dream games.
Sometimes it happens - Spec Ops: The Line for example. And while being a genuine piece of art, it didn't sell well, so I don't think it'll happen any time soon
The crossbow is great for a non lethal playthrough. You just have to be more patient early game when your skills are much lower. I've done so many non lethal playthroughs where I found d the crossbow pretty useful.
Curiously enough I bought this game, the sequel, and the prequel yesterday
@Samuel Andre oh I know, I'm already liking the game so much
What a rotten way to die
Did you also buy the prequel sequel?
Deus Ex is still one of my favourite games to this day, it holds up unlike a lot of shit nowadays. Of course, engine limitations did span a lot of creativity back in the day, but I'm sure we'll see some aspects of the gaming industry make it back to what it was, and even more so.
Been playing this game for years, at least 20 times with a variety of mods as well.
Never knew about the MJ12 Sewer Base. Mind blown.
Nowadays this part would be sold as DLC, same as the Vandenberg Gas part.
@@DietmarEugenDX levels after rescuing Miguel is dlc after dlc.
I have never thought about it before but I now believe with the fervour of a religious fanatic that Postal 2 is an immersive sim.
It is, though. Starting gunfights by peeing on strangers never ceases to amaze me.
One the greatest games of all time! I've put hundreds of hours into it and yet I've never regretted a single second. It's been installed on everyone of my systems since release, and always will. Just an absolute masterpiece!
Original Deus Ex took me more than a month to finish and every moment in this game was such a masterpiece experience
Deus Ex is the best game of all time. It's not just a game to play, it's an experience to live.

I love the house slippers
Wait... Human Revolution was a prequel? Clearly I was paying even less attention to the story than I thought...
I've seen a few other vids discussing this game, yet somehow you managed to present information that was brand new to me! I was shocked while watching this about halfway through when I realized I'm learning new shit about this game! Impressive stuff, and much appreciated that you put in the work to make this vid it's own thing to stand out!
1998 was a good year. Even if some of these legends came out a year before or after, 98 was the epicenter of legendary PC gaming.
Holy shit I didn’t realize how much you’d grown since I first watched you, when you were at like 40k. Congrats man.
It's interesting, that the cyberpunk genre very rarely shows up in all the different medias, and pretty much always destroys everything else. Take Deus Ex, Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner.
Love the thumbnail.
My vision is augmented.
Oooh boy, first the Deus Ex vid, and now the info that you're going to make a video about E.Y.E. - I friggin loved that game! Take care Charl and thank you for awesome vids!
I played this game like 2 years after its release, it blew my ass mind!
Seeing Frisk barely fit in that box made my day
That intro...im gonna love this video.

Most entertaining ad I’ve ever seen, great job
www.humblebundle.com/store/deus-ex-game-of-the-year-edition?partner=charlatan if you somehow don't own Deus Ex already, it's a dollar and change on the humble store right now (affiliate link BTW)
If I remember properly it is possible without Paul being unconscious to rescue him, try like I did saving as many of the mine/grenades as possible, plant them across the hallway outside the door at a guesstimated six feet apart, make sure to also put obstacles in Paul's way, things like chairs and potted plants, after the initial assault throw all remaining down the stairs and do as you typically do on your current run, like if you're trained in rifles go guns blazing into the last few soldiers left, once it's over talk to Paul :3
I hope this video will be at least three hours long
Played it when it first came out, when PC gaming was more niche than it is now. Was an amazing experience, I had a non-gamer friend used to come over mine & we'd play through it like a movie, with him making all the decisions, he loved it. Really cool experience.
Easily one of the best intros I've seen
that beginning was great.
Great review!
LMAO dude, I found ur channel because of youtube stories and thought like "Why the fuck you show me some cooking channel?!" But turned out you put out some real good content. Continue your work.
I was gonna say that I'd be in college when this premieres, but god DAMN it's on a Saturday! I love you, you sexy beast of a man.
Is your first day monday?
@@ghostnoodle9721 Monday is the start of my week, but school started months ago
Started playing this again a couple of weeks ago.
Calling this one of the best games ever really isn't an exaggeration, but it's kind of like calling Psycho one of the best films ever.
If you watch it now so many parts will seem familiar to you because so many other movies were inspired by it.
Deus Ex is the same. The story, dialogue, level design, quest progression, skill system and the style, and the way it handles player choice have been used in so many other later things.
None of the have quite managed to do it justice though.
In truth Deus Ex didn't invent most of those things, it's just the first example I can think of that put them all together so well.
That was not Paul lol, but yeah fighting and killing all the mib in the hotel doesn't help you save Paul, best thing to do if I remember correctly was to choose the option to stay and fight but then immediately leave through the bedroom window
I expected that intro to end with "I have contamination and mutants in my brain".
He was a good man
I... i cant believe... he did a lama’s with hats reference... i love him even more
I love your content
Thank you for that amazing intro
... That's not Paul :D having said that the bug i encountered was, fight through the 'Ton with Paul and clear it, but obviously i don't want to leave via the main entrance as that would be suicide without a stealth aug or camo vest, so i head back up and out Pauls apartment window, except that flips the trigger that makes the game think I abandoned Paul so he's now considered dead :D
back to the save file :D
13:55 that’s not Paul dentons body that’s JoJos body, Paul actually can survive the apartment
that sponsor was one of the best ive ever seen holy shit

I hope you revisit this game in the future, OG Deus Ex seems like a bit of a darling on this channel and I'd love to see it get the same kind of deep dive that Human Revolution got

Dude the Paul scene I fought all them mib and got to bottom lobby but never seen him dead that's news but I did get to the holding cell.
You actually can save Paul. The firefight is a bit bugged, so he might die sometimes, but if you defeat all the enemies he runs away and appears later on.
Amazing Llamas With Hats reference, subtle, 10/10. All it needs is a ridiculous amount of baby hands.
So much Ham you can feed my family for Chirstmas! Bravo good sir! Ahahah, one of the greatest sponsorship skits I've seen in a hot minute!
I actually finished my.......90th or something playthrough of this game yesterday. Picked the Merger ending.
The moment you said eye divine cybermancy i got very very excited
Great video - thanks. My personal favourite PC game. I play it on average, once every 2 years since its release. However, I have found the GMDX (Give Me Deus Ex) mod by Totalitarian to massively improve an already, genuinely incredible game. I highly recommend a replay of Deus Ex with GMDX installed and played on Realistic. It's an exceptional experience.
I too find it frustrating that the music is not on Spotify. That said, 3 separate artists were involved including Michiel Van Den Bos, Alexander Brandon and Dan Gardopee so perhaps that makes it awkward to publish as an album.
You are correct that this is quite a prophetic game these days, the only game I know that as time goes by, becomes more relevant.
Hardcore GMDX is amazing, if you ever get bored of realistic you should try it sometimes
@@LordTrashcanRulez Thank you - I just might give it a shot :D
Every rpg needs a malkavian mod.
The way I got rid of Chow was to get to the top of the hotel by hacking an elevator, shooting with the pistol once to break the skylight, and shooting a second time to deliver a headshot. I didn't even talk to her.
This also meant that the first part of the building's interior I explored was her apartment.
Don't forget, the GEP gun takedown is the most silent way to eliminate Manderly.
So nothing that's ever been released on PC has topped Deus Ex? That's a damning, but accurate, condemnation of PC gaming....
Nah. If anything that's a huge compliment because the PC has tonnes of great genre defining titles. Deus ex and system shock 2 are so influential that to this day many games including console exclusive AAA titles use RPG mechanics. Of course they don't do it right most of the time

this is weird, i enjoy the ads on my video, gj charlatan very funny!
I was not that bummed about the third of the sequels getting canned. I consider them OK games, but not good Deus Ex games. Way too safe in their themes, bit too absurd in some of their stylistic choices, the second one got ravaged by corporates.
If they were called, better "Mass Effect" though... Also, still better than abomination "Invisible War" was.
