- We DNA tested our Pomeranian using Embark Dog DNA Test Kit. We decided to test our dog DNA because I was told when I first got Boo that he is a purebred Pomeranian. However, some of his physical features don't exactly match the Pomeranian breed standards. So I'm always left wondering if he's 100% Pomeranian over the last 6 years. I love him with all my heart, and I'll love him regardless of what breed he really is. However, I don't wanna guess anymore. I love Boo! Full pom or not he’s still adorable. Your video convinced me to get a dna kit for my little pom. I got him from a breeder but he’s already had a number of health issues and a few non breed standard traits. I still love him all the same.

I've been curious after watching your videos what Boo's genetic history was like, because I was also sure there was another breed in him too, but I couldn't figure out what it was lol. Boo is still very cute! Also Lightning is more of a throwback Pom. He ways 11 lbs. he isn’t fat either. His parents were big too.
Yesss that totally makes sense for Lightning to weigh more if his parents are big and he’s more of a throwback Pom!! 🐶 For Cece or Boo if they weigh that much, they will be considered obese lol 😂 I remember at some point Cece weighted 3.7kg (~8.1lbs), she was already super porky and I wasn’t able to feel her ribs anymore 🤣🤣🤣

This was extremely interesting. Boo, doesn’t matter what the back ground is is adorable. I think the DNA test is extremely valuable when it comes to health care and health issues. My Pom passed away last year because I wasn’t aware of their problems with taxes collapsing. I rushed her to the vet and transferred her to a PET Urgebt care and hospital I think they misdiagnosed her as they thought it was a type of alerting reaction rather then a collapsed trache and administer
really interesting. How did you get her/his (I'll find out in other vid's) eyes back in ? I can't imagine that, must have been so terrifying.
It was very terrifying indeed! This is the first time we opened up about so you won't find the answer anywhere else haha 😝Actually our parents never told us about this incident until recently! I think they were scared that if I knew about it I would have been worried sick and booked a flight back home right away. So we never really knew the exact details but from what we heard he had to undergo a surgery, in which the vet tried to put his eye back into its position, and then used suture close the eyelid and avoid any space between the lower and upper eye lid (so he looked like a blind dog for a while) so that the eye stays in its position. Luckily it only affected one of his eyes though! 😅

Both of your dogs are absolutely adorable and I love watching them. I have had three pomeranian. Got all three from the pound and they have all had gallbladder and liver problems. One had his gall bladder removed last year, one died from liver failure. I love them dearly, love this breed but I don't think I will get any more poms. I do love the breed though, they are so cute and spunky.
I’m so sorry to hear that! 😢 Big hugs to you! Those don’t seem to be common health problems for Pomeranians according to my research, right? Do you think it could be due to irresponsible breeding likely from puppy mills where these Poms came from? Some unethical breeders/puppy mills continue to breed unhealthy parents which create puppies with lots of health issues unfortunately! 😰 What are the early symptoms of the diseases if you don’t mind sharing? We’d love to know to learn more! ❤️

Very interesting, but not surprising, as Boo what purchased at a pet store(know for selling pups from backyard breeders). He's a real cutie and lucky to have a wonderful life with you! I too have a Pomeranian mix, who I rescued. She's Pomeranian mixed with American Eskimo. This is the second such mix I've had and the size discrepancy was over 10lbs. I read up on the American Eskimo Dog and learned that there are 3 different sizes in this breed - Standard, Miniature & Toy. My first Pom/Am Eskimo must have been a Toy, where my present day pup is a Miniature.
Wow 10lbs difference in size? Oh interesting! I didn't know that American Eskimo Dog comes in 3 different sizes! I guess it makes a lot more sense now and Boo could totally have some Eskimo in him too lol! You're right about how it's interesting but it's not surprising given the reputation of pet stores lol (well at least lesson learnt and I'm on a mission with my channel to tell people to stay away from pet stores hehe 😂). Often these same animals end up in shelters and rescues, as well. Once you know better, you can do better. Boo is absolutely gorgeous and she seems to have the very cute character of a Pomeranian.
Like you, I had one of my Pom’s DNA done as I had some doubts as to her pedigree, even though she has a certificate and comes from Champions. It turns out she is 88% Pomeranian, 4% German Spitz, 2% Pekingese, 2% Japanese Spitz and 2% American Eskimo Dog.
Nevertheless, she behaves exactly like a Pomeranian and I love her equally to my purebred Pomeranian. She is adorable.
I am wondering if I had my KC registered Pomeranian’s DNA done, whether that might show some small mix even though he his purebred from a line of Champions. My reasoning is that the breed had to start somewhere, so that should show up in the genes don’t you think?
The main thing is though, they are both fit and healthy and very happy little dogs and although I don’t show them, they are both my little champions.

I must admit I’m a little bit surprised when you said she has a certificate and champion bloodline and yet still has many other breeds in her! Well I guess the German Splitz makes sense, and the other ones account for such a small percentage so it’s probably even harder to tell she’s not a purebred Pom compared to Boo’s case right? 😋 Now you make me think perhaps I should get Cece tested as well lol 😂
I’m no expert in this topic. I think if your other one has an AKC paper, it means that his great grandparents are also AKC registered Pomeranian - which means the great grandparents of his great grandparents have to be purebred as well at the very least, right? 🧐 If so, the percentage of the mix (if any) would be extremely small/insignicant that it probably won’t be detected in the test? I really don’t know - just my thoughts haha! Also usually the breeders of AKC Pomeranians will do the DNA test themselves so asking them for one is always worth a try 😛 Do let me know the results if you decide to test your hypothesis with your AKC Pom though - now that you brought this topic up I’m really curious lol!
You should do the embark on your other Pom. Especially from the health perspective.

Clearly not pure bred pom even without the DNA testing. But he is beautiful regardless.

Definitely these are great sources of protein and you can mix them with their food to entice your Pom! ❤️

I know this is an older video but I feel I need to say something here. Embark use to be the go to test for breeders to make sure their breeding dogs are healthy without genetic defects so they can safely breed them. Embark has fallen out of favor with breeders now cuz they often get the results wrong. Breeders have even contacted embark about all their mistakes and flat out told them they will start using another dna testing company.
I just did my pom-chi Daisy...30% Pom and 70% chi! We thought she had spaniel in her but no. We also used Embark but I wasn't happy with the fact that they requested we pay extra to have her health info. We already had paid $100.00 for the test so I thought the health info would be included but they wanted more 🤑🤑🤑. Regardless, Boo is still so cute and after being the owner of 3 poms and pom-chi he still looks like a pom to me.😃🥰
Wow! So Daisy is a true pom-chi hehe! 💕Oh yea because they have 2 separate kits - one for breed only and one for breed + health which costs $50 more right? I agree with you that it's a bit on the expensive side and I do wish they could make it more affordable so that the majority of dog owners can afford it! I really wanna do a DNA Test for Cece as well just to confirm but the cost really steer me away 😅

At the time of getting Boo, I was under the impression that he was purebred but he turned out to be mixed, which is fine though because he's just sooo cuteee ❤️

Sorry sent befir I finished they administered albuteral and with a collapsed trache thus inky quickened her death. I was devastated as she was nit inky my pet but had gotten me through some on most compkex heath issues. She was only 7 years old. DNA testing would have given ne done more info on her issues as well as her bloodline health issues. Ilgivd Boo a gentle hug and kiss for je. I live Boo and Cece’s shorts they are great as are her human parents. Kudos 😘

Ah hahaa! He might be a throwback Pom so he could still be a purebreed but I'd say if his physical features look different from AKC's description of a Pomeranian, it's definitely worth giving it a try! I think the main reason I decided to test his DNA was because his eyes are so not Pomeranian lol.
