@@ruutjormun2262 no. It's quite possible with the access to information today to gain all of this knowledge (although some of this information is bunk). However, the benefit, for me at least, is that the standard education is structured and builds each week. Not knowing where to start can be a daunting task in the fitness world. For example, I just finished a project for advanced biomechanics where I had to analyze a swing in baseball. Every joint in the body, internal and external forces acting on the body, muscles responsible for moving the joints, and then make recommendations for improvement for my sample athlete. Without having exercise physiology and motor learning prior to this course, I would've missed a lot of details. Something seemingly simple turned into 10 pages. So, it's possible. But it's likely difficult.

Karate kid was written by a Goju black belt. The founder of Goju was “Chōjun Miyagi” from Okinawa. That is exactly how you block in the soft part of Goju. The way the bad guys train is very familiar to the hard part of Goju. It’s like they split the style in two for the film. Also all the beach training is not for technique really, we all know that kick is not really performed like that, as does Miyagi, what he is learning is to overcome his primary weakness as a fighter: lack of focus. We see that in the scene before, with all his jumping and fooling around. By making him balance on something he has to stop all that shit. This is excellent focus training.
It’s more an 8 out of 10 for stand up fighting.

Love it!!!!! Yes indeed Professor Mike keep them coming on these Hollywood training and workout movie critiques! Not only do I love the calling them out on what works and what ineffective and a complete BS waste of effort exercise(s) or training method; I especially love your wicked sense of humor commentary in all your posted vids Coach Mike. It’s so stimulating loml! Damn… you can make a mofo chuckle until their sides hurt. My dude! 💪🦾

Man, that Pain and Gain analysis. I'm kind of a newbie in training, but to get better, I hire a trainer, which I like. I train seriously and I think we are doing great, but man, I recognize myself a bit too much in the bad relationship described by Dr. Mike. We always start by a chat while I'm on the elliptic to warm up (low intensity cardio), and then, I just see myself often talking too much to him in the following trainings. Yikes !! I hope my trainer is OK 😬
EDIT : No worry guys, we're currently crushing it in the gym lately me and my trainer!

Set concrete, measurable goals. If you don't reach them, your trainer is not OK.

Nothing wrong with a chat while warming up. It's supposed to light enough that talking isn't challenging. But if you're chatting in the middle of reps, especially for compound lifts then, yeah, you might not be pushing as hard as you otherwise could

A bit of chatting is totally cool! Just as long as you stay on task as much as the time is worth it to you! - Dr. Mike

@@RenaissancePeriodization Yeah, our chats doesn't help by any means the narrative of a movie! We have serious training talks; cause I'm an educated guess, haha!

I think you were a bit too brutal on karate kid but I'm also a karate practitioner. Wax on wax off wasn't to make him do a perfect block, it was to build muscle memory as a foundation of learning to block. Karate also does use blocks like that but they involve two hands and more nuance. You're right about the balance part, except he wasn't only trained for competition. He was training balance mentally, spiritually, and physically. This is an important concept in traditional martial arts. That's why a traditional martial artist is gonna say something along the lines of, "it's more important to know when to fight than how to fight."

As a trainer in a commercial gym I agree 1000 percent with the analysis of the Pain and Gain scenes.
Sometimes I catch myself completely zoning out in the middle of spotting a set of standing overhead presses while listening to a rich (or so they want you to believe) man/ woman talk about “how they made their first million.”
I know it’s wrong but after hour 4 plus (or 8 clients plus) it’s inevitable 😂
I love this video btw and you should definitely do more in this format!

Not only do personal trainers in commercial gyms actually “train” people the way that is shown in Pain and Gain, they also sometimes have the audacity to approach random people (not their clients) and tell them they’re doing something wrong. That’s when I know videos on the internet can sometimes teach a person how to do something better, than the education those trainers had.
I just had a random trainer tell me I’m squatting too deep…
