For the average person making a few collars, I think you're right. If the needle is penetrating ok and the thickness fits under the presser foot, why not? No worse than hemming denim.

Good tips on tension but I'm still not convinced that this machine can tolerate long term sewing of leather. Timing might go out of wack.

It depends on your handling of the machine. It will if you force it but that will happen to expensive machines too. It’s about the driver
