I recently launched a BIG update to my online art shop: PRINTS! And there were tons of things I had to think through before releasing that update, from sales tax collection to shipping to figuring out what kind of art prints I wanted to offer.

@@pat_dieselas per today, the print space only do for Squarespace and in the UK.. Giclee is integrated with Etsy and in the US.. I guess it'll be beneficial if you're an artist from different country & continent but has consumer base in these countries

Re: Print On Demand vs Handling the stocking and fulfillment yourself doesn't have to be an either/or decision. Many people have several print on demand shops while also having "their own" store where they handle everything by themselves. And neither type of a store has to be forever. It's good to remember that you're not married to any single type of store and you are free to switch from one to the other at any point if you notice it working for you better.
The important thing with these is really that you keep an eye on product quality and customer service. And be transparent with your customers if a product you previously manufactured by hand and shipped yourself, suddenly changes to one your outsource and gets shipped by a third party. It's just good business practice to let customers know about the changes

They are all so repetitive. "Gouge the consumer" "dabble in everything" "make quick no effort products." It's so refreshing that the old and tried way of making something people want and that gives value is still around! So refreshing.

Regarding "too many options" - That can be remedied with good organisation formatting, and curation. In my experience of this, the downside is, for example, if you sell prints (postcards/greetings cards etc.) and you manage the inventory yourself (not print on demand), you're going to have a lot of stock to care for. Most print services have "high" minimum orders for products. If you have a lot of designs you want to test-trade with, you're going to be looking at looking after 100s of items. This is a burden if you need to relocate where you store your items (moving house/moving storage/moving studio etc.). Also, the items will suffer from warping at the very least if they are not sold for a while. It's also a bigger hassle when listing them on e-commerce shops.
I absolutely love this video because I can tell you love to do art! Selling your art is just a means to being able to do more art. I want to come at art commerce with that same energy! Making money has become increasingly imperative since prices have been driven skywards, but as an artist, I am in a particularly advantageous position because now is a better time than ever to turn my hobby into my income source. I’m very grateful to artist/content creators like yourself who are showing the rest of us how to get where y’all are at. They say it’s lonely at the top, so I want to keep y’all company!
I had to halt my art business because of so many shipping issues and etsy's so competitive I can't gain traction on my digital products but your videos make me want to try again. Keep up the wonderful work!
This video is very helpful I’ve talked about selling my art for years I’m tired of just talking about it. It’s the confidence to even take one step forward that prevents me. I know nothing about business. It’s uncharted territories and my adhd makes paying attention to one thing and one task it’s challenging
USPS will pick your stuff up off your porch with a scheduled pick up. Game changer!! Just an FYI bc I also hate going to the Post Office. I never go now. 😜

This was so incredibly helpful!! Thank you. I actually love the process of packing and shipping things lol and I've done it on a veryyyyy tiny scale but it totally makes sense to consider what would happen if I had to do a much higher volume. I think I'll probably set up both POD and in-house products. Label printer and P.O. box are two other things I had considered the first time I started trying to sell work, but had forgotten. Such good ideas!!

I've been binge watching your content for the past week and I have to say, I've learned so much from you in just a span of 10 videos.
I hope you don't mind me asking, how long did you start building your community online before you decided it's time to start an online art shop?
I have a 9-5 job and living in the country where shipping to other continents would cost a lot, POD is the only way for me to get at least an acceptable profit. Also, I can focus on my next painting instead of worrying about the packing and shipping and drain out all my little time and energy I have left.

I started painting out of the blue a few months ago. I just bought half decent paint and brushes and started painting scenery.
It turned out that somehow I had a knack for painting that I didn't know existed! I didn't do art in school, I've never painted before. It was just the result of built up energy from me being generally housebound cause of mental illness!
I'd love to sell my art maybe one day, but right now I know that as soon as I make it my job I'll lose passion 😢
You have Van Gogh Syndrome. He wasnt too urgent to sell his paintings, he somewhat expressed that to his brother. His very kind brother, Theo, was supporting him completely.

Its an extremely interesting but tragic history. To be really honest, some of the details & even his lesser known paintings are a bit disturbing. He was really troubled.
His brother was the behind-the-scenes hero.
Try not to let the history change how you see or feel about his work. That can happen.
In the last part of the video you mention accounting software, sales tax plugins, getting a separate p.o box? where do i start to do all that? would love a more in-depth video on this stuff.

You are so inspiring! You sit there like a friend pushing us to do what we want, and I love it. (Side note, I've been doing my own--even my boyfriends--taxes for 5 years. So that part of this process doesn't scare me. It's actually kinda easy.) What scares me is actually creating things. I feel like I'm not good enough. Imposter syndrome, I guess?

With drop shipping, am I able to add other custom orders inside the prints? Usually like say if I wanted to include business cards etc and have custom packaging. Would I only be able to just ship prints with PoD ?

best sellers for me are holiday based so i tend to focus on those, and things related to said holidays. I still draw my own personal art and post it for sale, but dont expect it to really sell lol

When scrolling down all the way to the bottom on mobile, if I press "Shop" to navigate there, it sends me to a version of your shop where your prints are not up for sale yet. However, if I use the menu to navigate to your shop, the prints are shown as available for purchase. Just thought I'd let you know :)

a part of me feels like if you aren't getting enough feedback you need to feel even confident enough to start the process of bringing a product to life...then maybe you don't have that audience quite yet and maybe should hold off for a bit even if you still have a very small group of people who would buy your product. I'm in a situation where I ordered stickers etc from stickermule and now have product just gathering dust. I'm now just giving them away as freebies because it's that or getting depressed about it. And also a part of me feels like I'm just piggy backing off of artist friends audiences because I hate how Twitch made that a normal thing. My artist friends recommend me and people funnel in and say my style is "cute" but it's been stopping there. With anxiety, I am terrified in marketing myself. I get tongue tied. People have told me if I have anxiety then this isn't for me (making my art into a business) . But I just don't want to work at a 9-5 job the rest of my life and not see anything come out of my passion.
I'm in the same boat, with thinking fulfilling orders on my own sounds overwhelming and wholly unappealing to me. I thing drop shipping is the way to go for me starting out.

With print on demand, you don't have any control over the quality of customer service. You lose the ability to personalize the packaging. Plus, it's way less profit. I actually really enjoy making the items. It's my favorite part. I think POD would take all the joy out of everything
I think POD is great! It leaves you MORE time for just focusing on your art, so you don't waste time doing non-art, mundane things..
And with a number of POD's now, you CAN personalize your shipments to some extent.
With many you can upload your logo and it will appear on the packing list, and your name (or company name), will appear as the one shipping and on the return address.
Some will let you have an insert or two with your customer's shipment. Sometimes it's free, other times there may be a small fee.
I would much rather have that TIME to create MORE new art (which means more sales), then make my place a warehouse full of products, big piles of boxes and polybags in several sizes, rolls of packing tape, etc AND still have to print out shipping labels and affix them to hundreds of envelopes, boxes and bags.
Whew! I'd rather spend all that time doing my art. ☺️
@@pat4005 Both have trade offs. The downsides of POD is that profit margins are lower so you have to rely on making more sales and more time in making designs, and finding usable mockups to advertise the product is more difficult since you don't own it. You can use place it but it comes with its limitation, the most effective way is to own the product to get the best angles and to accurately depict what the customer will get through videos such as showcasing, for example, durability and resistance to water and other stuff about your item. By earning more you can rely on less sales and if the demand is too high you can increase the price since the loss of customers will still balance with the increased revenue.
But for pod your profit margin is already lower so you can't increase it freely since you already had to raise it to earn a fair amount.
If you're making more designs you have to make more mockups, manage seo, and create product descriptions for more items, and market every one of those products through social media, meanwhile adding links to direct them to that individual product.
Depending on what platform you use, you may be charged for making new listings. Since you're relying on a third party there are areas where it could fail.
There are drawbacks to shipping yourself such as having to manage inventory, and packaging depending on your product you may have to invest in tools to streamline your production. But your profits will overall be greater since you have more control over what you can subtract or add from your costs. It all depends on preference and what you want to allocate your time but there are several pros and cons to each one and ways to leverage the weaknesses.

I just started posting my stuff in a FB page and my personal Insta (not gonna make an art insta, I saw your video about how that doesn't work). Right not literally throwing everything on the wall to see what sticks.
I am a Folk artist and much of my work isnt that big, A3 is the biggest i go, but I have been unable to sell my art because I havent been able to get it in front of anyone. I cant afford to open etsy or shopify or any other of those type of sites, as I am married and have children and grandchildren so my money is tied up most of the time, I am a working class man as are many other artists so jobs and family are important. I dont feel I have to make huge sacrifices to sell art, it should be a holistic adventure not one of struggle and torment, or Stress. I understand marketing is the most important thing apart from the art itself.

There are LOTS of small art print shops that offer POD services, probably the best option is the a local shop close to you that offers this service. But I genuinely like theprintspace for UK artists and INPRNT for artists everywhere!

Hi Kelsey! I just purchased 2 of your templates for Notion & have downloaded the app, but I'm clueless as to how to actually open the templates in Notion. I'm also characteristically bad with technology despite being in my 20s so it's totally possible that this is a dumb question 😂
You need to sign up to Notion and then there should be a “copy/duplicate to your workspace” button for you to click when you view the template :)

I'm thinking this is maybe not your style (loved the slipping out of "what, I have to meet strangers, no!") but my punk/KLF take on only selling your best work is to have an annual party with a bonfire. You invite your buyers and collectors along. It's broadcast live, and the art that hasn't sold is offered for sale and if not sold there and then, burned. I recognise that's not everyone's way, but it makes me smile. No-one's taken up the idea, gotta say, don't know why :-)

Sadly for me, print on demand will not work for me in most cases. I do glow in the dark, glass painting, resin art and getting into making jeweler box (they also glow in the dark) and many other functional art. So believing a company will get that right... I can see them getting neon prints just fine with a black back ground. But not majority of what I do. I'm still sitting on the sidelines with my art.
Not sure why, I do not know how I would list them. And they do glow in the dark extremely well, no ego, they just do. I should do weather test. I will get around to that. I live in Alaska as well. So sales market, etc. I Can't just stay in one kind of art, it equals walls and closed in spaces for me. When I have tired for any length of time to, sticking to one kind of art, I start to panic, and all sorts of things happen. Long story short I cant do just one kind.
So what platform should sales platform so someone like me use?
