In motor racing, the bigger the wallet, the bigger the chance of crossing the line first. The fact that any person on a limited budget, can build and drive a truly unique kart, with a historic car as its inspiration and backstory and then "compete it, all be it within moderation, is what appeal to me. I sincerely hope this never changes and that in Australia we keep these ideals...
That is exactly the point of what I was trying to say. We always have a tendency to push the limits and in this hobby, that is not always a good thing.
Any good links you can share to Australian groups for cycle karts. I'm located between Brisbane and Toowoomba and keen to learn about the local scene.
I’m working on my own right now, here in The Netherlands there are no groups of builders.. But the process is awesome!
Fantastic, someone from Sweden is also lamenting not having a group nearby. It only takes 2 karts to make a group. Cheers
Waar in Nederland ben jij. ik zit in het Noorden net over de grens in Duitsland.
@@martijngeven4898 Oosten vlak voor de Duitse grens 👍🏼
I´m in Germany, thinking about building one, maybe with two friends, but nothing planned yet ^^
Perhaps it will be you, who brings the hobby there ! Good Luck !...Post some build progress pictures !
This cycle cart racing is the most exciting thing to happen to car racing since Mario Andretti. It's about the fun and the thrill of cars.
Yes, we think it is a lot of fun.
Funny how some people will get involved in an activity, and immediately try to change it. If people don’t like the Cyclekart rules, then they should go and start their own thing.
I hope there are enough people that want to keep this simple, and fun and not get over run by competitive influences.
Thanks, 'build a better mousetrap is a thing' happens in every hobby. But this formula just plain works.
Looking at some of them as just the wood body or the complete end product It makes me think of and reminds me of building a Pine wood Derby car in the Boy scouts as a kid only bigger and you can actually fit in it and Race it. I'm 55 and I'm sure I'm not the only one my age older or younger that has or had that urg. Our cars like lots of our wind up toy Aircraft were actually Balsa wood. Like you wind ups powered buy a rubber band. You don't see that simple fun toy anymore. It's all plastic. Hours of fun until they crashed into something too often .
It all really just for fun, thanks for watching. Get out in the Garage and Build Something Cool!
Thanks for taking the time to make these videos!
Glad you like them!
This is a great video for us newbs. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Another informative video Steve, well done!
Glad you enjoyed it
Well said. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
We have 3-4 guys near DC getting started this year. Your videos (and the sites you recommended) have been a huge help. I am doing a (very lightly cosmetically modified) Stevenson instead of the full on Alfa P3 as a first cyclekart. Thank you for your awesome work!
That is awesome! Keep us posted
What is the progress?
Any updates? I’m in the northern Virginia area and just learned about these. Looking for something to do as I prepare for retirement!
Thanks Steve for making this video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for this one! I'm planning to start building a kart later this year
Fantastic, these are a ton of fun.
Needed this. Thanks 🙏🏽
You’re welcome 😊
THis is a GREAT Video, Steve! As open-minded and inclusive as anyone could want, and it still has some Really Important guidelines and tips which we've all learned from our experiences building CycleKarts. Well Done!! (and I am really glad you got a chance to drive the old Delage...Fingers crossed we'll get all of Peter's and my C-Ks to an event where you can hop in 'em!)
Thanks Michael, I really appreciate your leadership in the hobby. I would love to be able to see more of the OG cyclekarts at an event. Maybe Huntsville 2024? That would be super fun.
I'd love to get them out there!@@stevevinson6030
Great Video Steve, thanks !
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video Steve. I hope to start one this year if I can finish up all the other projects I have on my 'to do' list.
Fantastic, let me know if you have any questions
@@stevevinson6030 Will do
Thanks Steve, very informative. As far as I know cycle karts are non existent here in Western Montana, I'll see if I can change that 🙂
Good work. I know there are a few in Casper, WY.
Yes, gooood. More instructional cyclekart videos
Thanks!
Steve Vinson and his videos are just plain gold for us looking to getting into this hobby. Love the insight AND the selfless links and info of others working (playing?) on cyclecarts!!
Thanks, I sometimes feel like an Evangelist.
OK this looks freaking fun ! 😅
Oh yes, indeed.
Steve there are some things that are confusing me. There is an in car-video from the 2017 Gordon Bennet race where the person filming started near the back of the field and passed everyone within half a lap. He just up and ran away from the field. It's obvious that he is doing something much different. So how does he do it? The car (#77) is sort of unique with air cleaners and pipes sticking out the hood. That same car shows up on video from Tieton, so how does he run there if the rules are so tightly enforced? I've also seen videos with cars running a Lifan engine which is considerably more powerful than the Honda. This is suppose to be fun but it won't be much fun if you put 1,000 hours into a car just to have no chance against the guys putting in a little more engineering. I also notice that you and Dennis Thomas have videos out there doing performance mods to your engines. So how do I make sense of all this? Where are the real boundaries, or are there any?
Yes, Dennis and I and many other builders have done some minor improvements to the motor. These are considered OK and within the guidelines. Commonly referred to as Stage 2. Governor Delete, Timing Key, header and upgraded Carb and air filter. Internal mods: cams, pistons and machining are not considered OK> Dennis upgraded a cam, but went back to stock as there was not increase in performance.
The kart you are referring to at Tieton is a very light and fast kart, it has no engine mods. The driver of that kart combined with a very low center of gravity make all the difference.
What I was trying to get across is that if you have the cyclekart attitude, you will have more fun to stay within the guidelines. If you desire is only to win every race......well maybe shifter karts are better suited for your goals.
With most car related stuff, I tell everyone it’s really not about the cars, but the people I get to know. It’s like a big extended family.
A fun and simple thing should remain fun and simple. I get it and would love to participate. I have been to the website but I haven't found the pages that really guide you to parts suppliers, a plan, or a parts list. I'll look again. Thanks.
I have parts lists and plans under the FILES tab on the Arizona CycleKart Club page on Facebook
@@stevevinson6030 thank you. My brother and I raced vintage motocross bikes for years because we have a passion for them. But more importantly, because we enjoyed spending time together. Now, in our 60's and 70's, cyclekarts may be just the thing to fill the void.
I filled the void by getting a Honda monkey a couple of years ago, but I think there is a high risk of sheet aluminium and Cleco’s playing a big part in my future🤣🤣🤣
Laundry done yet? Good video
Ha Ha, sorry about that. I didn't think the camera would pick that up.
I've got four or five old small two and four stroke motors lying around, as well as several motorbike wheels, and now I think I know what I might want to do with them
That is exactly how the first CycleKarts were made, old rusty bits that we put to good use.
I'm totally new to cyclekarts. I've been trying to explain this to my older retired racing buddies and they don't get it. I've been asked how big the purse is, and when I tell them it's not about winning, I get a blank stare. I guess this hobby isn't for everyone...
Yes, that is exactly why we attract a 'certain kind of gentlemen' There are lots of other ways to go 'racing'. Cheers!
Hi Steven, i am from Indonesia, i interested to build the cyclekart here, i want to know about the alluminium thickness that you used? Really appreciate your reply. Thanks in advance
I typically use 3003 grade .050" thickness aluminum sheets for the body panels
Is there a downloadable build manual for the Stephenson car?
there are some sketches on the cyclekarts.com page. I have plans and parts lists under the files tab on the Arizona CycleKart Club page on Facebook
Wheels are to find in North Carolina
if you need wheels send an email to andrew@ingroundtrampolines.com
He has complete sets that are brand new reproductions of the Honda CT90 wheel
Great video! But...Why not bigger brakes? Why not bigger wheels? Why not a high performance motor?
The reasons are many. Primarily these karts are dangerous exactly how they are . These are not RACING machines. Do some guys sup up their motors and improve the brakes....yes. Does it make them faster.....no. The limits of the brakes are the contact patch of the tires. All they do is leave long black steaks on the pavement all the way to the scene of the crash. I'm joking....but not really. The overarching ethos of cyclekarts it Art first, Racing Around second. If you are good with that, then welcome to the club, glad to have you.
@@stevevinson6030 Sorry... I was teasing. I get it. The rules are there to keep it accessible to people on a limited budget, and keep it a sport for people's garages. Motor sport gets too expensive very quickly, and out of reach for the people who currently make up the sport.
Sweet. I'm glad we're on the same page. Cheers
What about the weight of the driver? I want to get into this, but I'm a heavy guy; around 330 lbs. What suspension and brake upgrades would the car need?
Lots of big guys in the hobby. Just build the kart so you can fit and get in and out without too much trouble. The front suspension is plenty strong and the brakes work better than people think. The biggest issue with braking performance is the the tires. There is very little tire touching the ground, so the brakes lock up very easily.
What about the rims? Will they taco on a turn?
@@therussmccurdy2602 I have seen only one wheel Taco, it failed because the spokes were not maintained properly. Yes, side loading can cause issues, I know of a few karts that weigh over 350 pounds plus the driver that have no issues. Just keep in mind the potential for failure and it will help you drive your kart in a manner that will make it last a lot longer. I have broken many spokes, so I upgraded my spokes to an 8ga spoke and it is a lot stronger.
I wish there was a group in Sweden.
There are several groups in Europe; Hungary, France and England, I know those aren't exactly close. But the best way to get a group is to build a cyclekart and show it off. Interested parties will find you pretty quickly
I'm wanting to make a very off-road friendly electric cycle kart
It is doable. Get out in the garage and build something cool
Can I buy a plan. Can you send to Uk. Cheers Clive

So it can be pretty much any race car from pre war era.... Has to follow the spirit of the build correct?...
Yes, we aren't really build exact scale replicas. These are home made toys that look neat. Some guys have adapted late 40's and very early 50's indy cars, that look good with the tall skinny wheels.
Hi Steve!
I'm interested in some 'blueprints' or frame drawings of the chassis. Let me know how to contact you, please.
Great videos!
Happy to help. They are available on our facebook pages under the FILES tab.

Thanks for watching.
@@stevevinson6030 Thanks!
Only wish this was on the east coast
I'm sure there there would be some people on the East coast. I'm in Australia and found 3 people within 200km of me making them.
There is a FaceBook group in the NorthEast of the USA, and I know several builders up and down the East coast, New York to Florida....that is a big area. What state are you in?
@@stevevinson6030 How about NC?
@@jong4939 the only group I am aware of on Facebook is called the Northeast Cyclekart Club, there may be others I'm just not aware of
Good info, but I wish the laundry wasn't going at the same time.
You and me both!
I’m about to make a 24hp brain cycle kart cause I just gained a Briggs and Stratton v twin
Wow, that's a lot of motor for a CK. Good luck
If your not keeping within the parameters set by the club, your no longer having fun at the club ! Dont make it an ARMS race to see who has the deepest pockets...that ruins the fun for everyone. Go Kart....with big wheels....nothing more. K.I.S.S. all the way. I wish there was a club in my area !
Hi Jo, What part of the world are you in? There may be other builders closer than you think
I'd like to hear what you're saying but all I could concentrate on was why is your dryer running through the whole video.
Sorry about that. It is very distracting.
I got interested in these things a few weeks ago. But seeing the total lack of innovation or imagination that is imposed in the "clubish" environment, I dont think I want to be in any club. "Dont ask those same old questions. We run THIS motor and THIS motor only!" The men that built the cars you seek to emulate would be aghast at your restrictions on new ideas.
Ok, build what makes you happy.
Steve, you get me wrong, I'm 65 years old and have no desire to get into something like a shifter kart. I don't want to be in a position to win every race. Yes I am competitive, but not to that extreme. It's no fun if the results are a forgone conclusion. That's my point, if you already know who's going to win it's not going to be any fun. I don't want to do what the guy in #77 is doing. Maybe you should take a look at the video again. Here is the link czcams.com/video/pu61UIlZAl0/video.html then try to tell me with a straight face that he has a car that is a little lighter with a lower center of gravity and he's just that much better driver than everyone else but he doesn't have any more engine than the rest of the field.
I have driven that kart and I am telling you with a straight face. It is fast, yes. The primary difference is that the guys who built that kart, drive it on the absolute edge of sanity. They have since learned their lesson. That was their first time driving a cyclekart at an event. Many guys on their first go think that it is about winning. After a weekend of running, many guys suddenly get what this is all about. Some never 'get it' sadly. It really is all about fun, don't let that one video keep you from enjoying yourself.
This entire video is just 9 minutes of hand signals, so if you're looking to see what the thumbnail suggests -- a CycleKart kit being built -- you're going to be very disappointed.
Apologies. Lots of other CycleKart building content on my channel. Thanks for watching.
