Thanks for watching!
it's refreshing to see simple builds that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Just the essentials.
I agree. Some people get a bit carried away. lol.
Yes, I was thinking the same.
The hanging baskets were a great idea, saw that and had an immediate “Oh, duh! Why doesn’t everybody do that?” So light, secure, and makes it easy to unload and pack up.
Only ladies living in vans?
No. I have seen men too.
While I was still on active-duty in the Marines (yes, and I’m female) I washed my hair most nights(or days, depending on the enemy’s work schedule), and I have long hair. I rationed 1 liter or my daily allotted 3 liters of water for washing my hair.
I’m the type that has to wash her hair everyday. I poured 1/4 over my hair to get it wet, shampoo, use 1/4 to wash shampoo out, then condition, and so on. Then I used the baby wipes you buy at nursing home/older people supply store that they use on people who are bed bound.
I shaved my legs using baby lotion and a razor. I shaved my legs and other stuff for health reasons, it’s easier to keep your body clean, and there are a lot of different types of mites, lice, and all that stuff.
If I can keep clean and pristine in Iraq, you can do it anywhere.
Thank You for your service! My 2 nieces were Marines and are home now.
I think it would've been much more useful and intelligent if we made our governments make solders build houses, grow foods etc, instead of going all over the world to supposedly "being democracy".
Imagine trillions of dollars used for actual useful, necessary things like that.
Thank you for your service
Alli M. -THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SERVICE!!!! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Thank you Soldier! And God bless you!
I could tell by the fit of that back curtain, this was going to be a nice build. Lovely, and simple! Also, kudos to her son for the encouragement (and electrical work!).
I love her simple setup. So many people think their van has to look and feel like a high end apartment. Her build is cute, comfortable, fits her needs and very practical. I find her and her van very inspiring. Thank you for sharing her great ideas and good advice.
Her screens are a very good design!
Her van looks about the same size as most, but she seems to have a lot of room in there. Really interesting. The square walls and roof really help it feel less closed in. Very cool.
Not having upper cabinets makes it look more open. Less is more.😊💃
Those baskets were something to note! 🧺
One of those see it, and “Oh, duh! So effective!! Why isn’t everyone doing that instead of built-in cabinets?”
Could she tell us what hardware she used for her screen on the door?
Absolutely. No upper cabinets is a game changer. We tend to accumulate more than we need and building space for what you need vs what you have is ideal...IMHO.
Love your attitude and spirit. I paid 1060 plus installation for an Airhead. Now I put a white scented trash bag in the bowl and toss after one use. This fool spent 1060 on a bucket! I use screw top sturdy bottles from dollar tree for liquid. Bob said you either toss it or treasure it and carry it around in tanks!
She looks like a very happy camper and has a really comfy home that suits her well. Good to see happy smiles and see that it can be done with a bit of effort and patience. Gives me hope, thanks so much! Happy travels👍👏🌈
Ya know Bob, this video has opened my eyes to working to support a life style is very stressful. Radar seems to reflect that a simple non cluttered life is good for the soul. I like your work sir and I appreciate your encouragements.
Love the build! She seems like a nice woman, I wish her much happiness 😊 Safe travels 🌻
Bob, you make the world a better place!! Thank you!!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Yes. I agree. Thank you Bob.
She is so right about you giving the courage live the nomadic life as a solo woman like Radar. I came out to the RTR this year and learned a lot. Thank you for doing this for me and all the nomadic people.
Maybe a shower tent that’s open on top?
Doesn’t it seem she’d be a lovely friend to have - hear more of her thoughts over a couple cups of tea. Thank you for the van tour and love her acknowledging Bob’s contributions at the end.
OMG!! Your screens are million dollar ideas! Sign me up!! 😍
Love the baskets! Easily accessible, yet tucks things away and light weight! It suits my ADD brain. Also love her back screen! 💗
Thank you for mentioning the "weight of wood everywhere" issue in these builds Bob. Such a darling young lady and she did a great job on her "build" and has a great attitude as well!
I've long wondered about why so many build out their vans/RVs with wood. Why don't more use steel framing which should be lighter -- is cost a factor?
Metal gets hot more so than wood. I watched one video wher the person burned their hand when they were in bed by touching the metal. They insulated that right away.
Radar is right you perform such a great service for so many. It takes the scary out of it. She did a great job and it’s wonderful to see you don’t have to be a carpenter. Kudos to you both. Cathlyn from TN
Your son’s advice was gold. You can make a lot of mistakes for 80 dollars per hour for a carpenter!
I wish there was an RTR in New Zealand. I guess I need to become the NZ Bob Wells....
Yeah well, NZ gets to be Middle Earth. You can't have it all.
😂
#LOTR fans will get this.
I've gotten into the habit of washing my hair once a week, sometime stretch it out two a week and a few days. The key is at night I add a little water and a bit of conditioner (I have curly hair) I braid my hair every night and in the morning take the braids out and my hair is nice and wavy. Also keeping my hair above the shoulders makes it easier to manage. With curly hair shorter the better, less tangles and knots.
Vanna Mae
You got it figured out.
Good on you.
Good tips!!
I love this so much....so many great ideas and this inspires me as a single woman looking to do the same! Go Girl!!!
She makes vanlifer look so easy! I would follow that simpler version. Thank you so much!
Hi Bob ~ This is so close to what I'm dreaming of! Thank you for this wonderful interview! I loved Radar's Winnie-The-Pooh sign of encouragement. It's great to see ideas that don't require carpentry skills!!! 👍🏻😊
Bob is an inspiration, no doubt, for everyone curious about this lifestyle. Radar is a delightful woman and she has done a masterful job of creating her own rubber tramp life. Wonderful interview.
I noticed it looks like most of the weight inside her RV rests on the driver's side, so I hope she rotates her tires regularly and keeps an eye on her suspension parts for sagging, etc. (She probably thought of this already.)
This is the kind of rig I have thought about for myself. Especially using pre-built items but with what I already own, which I could modify and I would have to pay someone to help me build because of health problems I cannot do it all on my own. And I love some of the things I have had for a long time. I would want something very comfortable and pretty to remind me of my nice home. Living where I do now I am not able to make friends like I did when I was raising my children. A group of like minded people who could except me as I am now. Most of my long time friends have passed away. I enjoyed watching both of these videos 👍
Great ingenious job on the screen curtains, especially the side door one. She's very clever. I think this lifestyle and doing our own builds and figuring things out probably sparks our problem solving minds. I love her shower too. But I can relate to not wanting to go out there and shower. Maybe having a curtain rigged up somehow would help. Coddiwompler! :D That brought a big smile to my face. I had never heard that before, but I love it!
Radar is very interesting. And a seasoned traveler. I also looked into many potty choices then I bought a bucket and a seat to fit it and now I'll just buy some horse pellets and share the huge bag with whoever. Thanks Bob
Thanks for sharing, Bob. Radar did an amazing job putting her rig together. I just ordered my CoolCamp....being built as I write this....and I'm real stoked about it. My car can only tow 1000 lbs, so my choices were very limited. And, I will be a camp host this season, so the park rangers pretty much insisted that I not sleep in a tent in 'Bear' country. I'll keep you in the loop in anything extraordinary happens! Happy Trails 🚐
Neat homemade bug netting. Some of the homemade touches are innovative. The van has as much as the owner needs for now. Coddiwompler - I love it!!
Very innovative! But simple... it’s like, wow, that burlap earring display was smart, but she really didn’t need to talk about it too much once it was shown because it was self-evident, even if it was something to be proud of.
Amazing wire management by her son too... I suspect the family genes are blessed with higher than average intelligence, but the practical kind.
Wow, this was 20 minutes? Almost exactly 20 minutes if you don’t count the outro. It feels a lot shorter, I think that’s because a lot of her build was self-evident and she only explained a few unique things. Truly a simple yet thoughtful build! 👍🏻
What a fantastic idea with the screen curtain. I see a business opportunity for her. I'd buy one if she made one for me 🥰🥰
Love her build and attitude. "Simple" rules!
Climate also has an effect on haircare needs, I find.
Beach3Girl curly hair needs washed less often too. In my experience.
Great interview!!! I’m happy she shared about long hair about East to care for. Have a great weekend y’all
Yes that was great to hear about the long hair. Her hair looks lovely! Reminds me a bit of Steve Martin's british x- wife....
Great interview bob Thank You for putting this out for those of us that really want to do this but are a bit scared ...Good to know the community is friendly and welcoming
Yes. I agree. I’m looking at vanlife myself trying to decide what to do.
She looks like a singer. The one who sang, "have i told you lately that i love you".
Thanks Bob, this is another great learning experience. I get useful ideas every time you post one of your interviews. And thank you Radar! Job well done.
Awesome vid Bob and Radar! Very helpful tips. About showering: I'm disabled now but have an extensive mountaineering background. Started hiking with backpacks at age four in the Austrian Alps. We spend weeks above the treeline, without showers, carrying all our supplies as a family unit.
My dad was in the military and had an engineering/survivalist mindset. We did little "cat washes" by a river or glacier runoff. Radar is right, depending on your hair type, most of us don't even need daily washes. And for those with dry skin and dry hair it's healthier taking at most, 3 showers/week and washing your hair weekly instead of daily.
Yeah, you adapt, you survive, you don't complain. I'm disabled with chronic spinal meningitis, and still see myself living in a van most of the year. But I can't carry water containers so will contemplate a solution for that. Yup, there's an answer somewhere!
I love her setup. So attractive and cozy. Very orderly. Simple but functional for her. I think it's a winner.
Such a lovely lady! She reminds me of TiKi! All the best to you on your adventurous life! Stay safe!
So true the RTR is a great gift for anyone who wants to be apart of an alternative way of living with some great new friends.
I used to struggle with ‘oily’ hair and finally figured out it was the shampoo for oily hair that was making it so. (And I had very long hair!) I became more aware of chemicals and product and all the plastics used for what we are told we need for our everyday hygiene and switched to a Lush Shampoo bar. I can go a week without needing to wash my hair, but typically wash it every 4 days, depending on daily activities ( heat/sweat/sand, etc.) and the bar lasts me for over a year. No plastic bottle, no unnatural gunk in the waste water, hair is in best shape ever; simple and effective.
Thank you for this video! I have just bought a van and about to live in it but I'm overwhelming myself with all the details. I'm so grateful for builds like this because it reminds me of what is important and why I decided to do this to begin with.
You can remodel and add things as you go.
This is what I found, too. Simple is mostly the best solution. So many professional van builds that are overdone and solve 'problems' that don't really exist. Once you simplify things, your mind has time to focus on life rather than things.
Super creative use of space for home sweet home! Thx Bob for showing us another great example!
I chose the ProMaster for many of the same reasons, but I found the short version in a pinch last October to move from Ohio to the PNW. I have the same ideas of using already-made furniture so I don’t have to cut so much and build. I’ve been lucky to find some great items so far. I can’t wait to get my build and business going so I can hit the road! Love her house! Thanks for highlighting the single ladies living free!
My hat is off to her for taking in stride and doing it! Congrats! Awesome job! And a great personality!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You've done a wonderful job and you're right about long hair, thank you.
I have a promaster as well n I've been looking for a screen idea for my slider, love yours!! N yep i love my bucket toilet!!
Home run, Bob. Five stars out of five stars for her, for the two videos and for you. She is delightful and you seemed just a little bit smitten. Keep up the great work.
So what does she, or any other nomad, do all day? If it were me, I would not have the space for all my hobbies and omigod, books! Do people just give up their activities? Like artwork, quilting, felting, spinning, etc. I can't live without being surrounded by books - it's not even imaginable. But I still watch in fascination. There is something so appealing in being so self-contained.
there are many video of those activities being done by van lifers! Some running businesses and working online, writing novels, painting, leather working, jewelry making etc. Yes a fulfilling activity filled life for many of us... Bob and others have a life of service to the community, there are so many styles of van life.
You don't have to give things up, you just have to find new ways to engage in your hobbies. For example, you said "I can't live without being surrounded by books". Imagine, then, being able to spend all day freely roaming from library to library or bookstore to bookstore with access to more books than you could ever store in your home!! The only thing you REALLY lose with this lifestyle is convenience and immediacy, both of which can be overcome with some creativity. And you'd be surprised at all the advantages you never considered that spring from dealing with the limitations/inconveniences.
She did a wonderful job; I hope she gets to enjoy it for many miles and years.
What a lovely person she is. It is people like her, who can live this lifestyle with grace and simplicity...that make me want to take the jump to this way of life. Awesome, functional van design. Thanks for sharing!
One of my absolute favorites, simple, real and so doable. A warm smile, doing life in passion!
Thanks Bob for sharing this video, she absolutely right about long hair is much easier to keep clean, her van is so beautiful and well organized, Bless and HAPPY journey Cheers from Las Vegas NV.👍👍😇😇😇
Nice, and I love how comfy it seems plus carpet floors good for cold months and she standing.
She drips confidence! I think those 2 videos were in the top 5, great viewing, nice lady.
Susan Premo
Thought so too susan.
The earring storage is great wall art on its own.
A great job with very simple resources!! I am concerned, though, with so many of these videos where people are storing propane tanks and batteries in the living space. Both should be in separate, well-ventilated compartments closed off substantially from the interior to instead exhaust outside the cabin. Although the risks with propane should be fairly obvious, people severely underestimate dangers associated with batteries. But even AGM sealed batteries can become dangerous in a thermal runaway situation, and/or can vent hydrogen gas - I personally had an AGM battery vent while charging in my house, which is the last time I ever mistakenly thought it was 'safe enough' to do. It's not especially difficult or expensive to take the extra precaution, and the meager amount of time and money you spend may very well keep you from unnecessary harm.
I would love to see a video on how to separate these things from the living space in a van build.
She did a great job with the build of her van. I agree that the outside shower would not work for me. I admire her wonderful attitude! Thank you for sharing! Thx Bob.
Can't beat that row of baskets for upper storage; excellent curtain design; after my own heart with the recycled furniture. Have fun, stay safe, 'Radar'.
I enjoyed this video, like the way she has took matters into her own hands , love the shirt she hands on, thanks again Bob.
I am inspired to do this, it's simple, functional, doable, relatively inexpensive. Yes I can do this . Thanks!
What a sweet, beautiful woman, and a great rig ❤️
Great interview, thank you Radar for sharing your setup up.
That screen curtain was ingenious. That was one happy lady. Loved the tour.
TY for sharing Bob. These encouraging video's keep the dream alive.
Love your conversion especially the bug curtains
Very cool! Enjoy!
This is why I watch a lot of these vids while I am sketching out what I am going to do with this van. I see what people buy and what they use - I see those outside ones are only used for men, for the reason she gave. What she talkes about with the "weed Sprayer' is actually pretty good! Did it camping!
Raydar is right on target with that build.
What a great Rig for a beautiful woman! Way to go Radar, Happy blessed trails to you!!
Another excellent interview. I would like to see more senior couples living the van life on a budget, not just single seniors. Thank you!
I'm 60 this year. My beloved wife is 62. Living like this has been a dream of mine ALL my life. She's just not into it. We would be that "senior couple" you mentioned if she was on board. I was wondering how old Radar is. I would like to see more folks admit their age. Peace.
Great build and easy, super ! Thanks Bob. . sweet lady.
I love her bed cover and the view from the bed! Heavenly!
Nice ..the electrical comp.maybe need to be vented to prevent a malfunction..overheating..so the equip% last longer..
I like the saying in the van, about your self!
I have a similar build-out in a 2015 Promaster 2500. The layout is simple and straight-forward. I am 'stuck' in choosing cabinetry above the kitchen area. Love the solar water heater. I have a Thetford (NIB), an inline hot water shower and 12 volt water pump(s). I have 200 watts of rooftop solar, two 12 volt marine lead acid batteries, and converter with a four stage charger. Winter arrived before I finished, so the build is in limbo. Radar's build encourages me to get back at it! Thanks Bob. You inspire us.
its great you guys are far away from the corona virus.
Loved the interview and the tour. Thank you. Cool screen! Very nice electric work by your son....we want to see a brag- picture of him😊. It was liberating to hear about the fancy shower. ( I have one of those black bag-showers that also didn't live up to my expectations much either. Havent figured where to hang it and doesnt get hot as hoped. I got the weedsprayer next but haven't painted it black /swopped out the nozzle yet. I have the orange submersable shower pump which charges with a computer cord but it is ideal only if you unlimited water only bc it does such a strong stream-goes thru a lot of water. Which can be good, but bad for limited water). Love these tours and interviews Bob. I thought her rig was going to be fancy which is unrealistic for me but it was encouraging to see practical things she bought. Where can i get a footpump set-up like that? Are they purchase ready?
Buy foot pump on Amazon. I have a similar one.
I really liked the sprayer idea. I have a regular faucet and it is kind of sloppy to use. Sprayer is an excellent idea!
More great ideas! I love the Ram Promasters. It's fun to see all the innovations for vans! One question I'd ask now with the "pandemic" is, "Does she now use the roof shower more?". Thank you, Bob!
Great build and a wonderful person 😎
I love this, and I think the lady is very nice as well. Super nice setup and I think it is great.
This is a simple, perfect build. Wonderful!
Kudos Radar for having the gumption & the vision & trusting yourself to see it through.
You've given me awesome curtain ideas, thank you😀.
Hope to see you in a caravan someday. Take care & safe travels.
Radar is outstanding in her field! Thank you both for sharing! Blessings Abound!
This is the type of vehicle I'm looking at once I hit retirement age. I'm 53 now so still have a few years till I buy however I'm taking everything in and where I work they have drivers with sprinters so I've been in them empty and measured everything from height length width and have started drawing up plans for what I know I want though things get changed and vehicles vary especially over time I'm hoping to be ready to buy the right vehicle and get it built out within the last year or two of working. Your channel is my favorite and your dog has the same markings as my former female dog it almost brings tears to my eyes everytime I see him. Keep on keeping on you are needed and appreciated.
What a lovely lady, she made a lovely job off the van.I love the mesh curtains.👍🇬🇧
Maybe I missed it, but refrigeration for food? Ice? A cooler maybe, at least? How does she spend her days? Sitting around with neighbors or engaging with local volunteerism, etc.?
I love this..... Every thing about it!! I like how the lady keeps herself up!
Radar is a kindred spirit . You rock gurl. Travel well and travel safe. 🇨🇦👏🏽🙏🏼🚌🙏🏼👏🏽🇨🇦
great simple clean build with creativity.
Great van Radar! Your screens are excellent! Light Bright Functional- Love it💕
I’m really impressed. Very beautiful.
I loved this van!!! So well done!!!
She's just a little older than me, and I want a Promaster, too. And I hope my sons encourage and help me, too! But I'm pretty good at a lot of that handywoman stuff.
I was looking at them too. Very nice, but very pricey. Out of my range for sure.
Lily Me - New or used? These work vans are usually super durable and tougher than normal cars and SUVs! Deals do exist, saw a van in great shape for $9000! Barebones and gutted is cheaper but also more ideal, because you’d replace most of the insides anyway.
there are so many ways to do a build. You can definitely do it. There is no wrong way, except to not do it.
EvShrug, agreed. Last October I purchased a 2014 high roof in Michigan for under $10k that’s beautiful. Moved to west coast and you can’t find them out here, so I considered selling it for a profit, but I love it and am going to keep it and convert it so I can travel.
Great information and inspiration!!
I will be on my way in 4 years. So much to dream about. I truly appreciative all of you 😊
I really love the use of the kitchen cart and the screens!
Thank you for the interview and the tour, Bob! It's always so lovely and inspiring to see people figuring out what works for them. All walks of life with a common goal of just focusing on experiences and happiness in this short life
I'm in the process of getting my build ready and planned out and can agree that simplicity simply is the best option. It can get borderline intoxicating to think of clever ways to "improve" the functions of your van, but often times the simplest option ends up serving you the best in the long run
Great interview! I love simple! Beautiful van!
Great video Bob! Such a lovely lady and I love her van build. She really did a great job on all of it. Thanks for sharing so many good ideas with us. Be safe and God bless!!
