  • Toro Timemaster 30" Lawn Mower Review - There is a lot of hype on this mower and I wanted to see if the positive reviews were real & could this lawn mower mow and mulch as good as they say and really REDUCE MOWING TIME?
This mower has the optional side discharge option included. Sadly a camera problem prevented me from showing you this but side discharge is included as well.

Great video as always. I've actually owned a timemaster that I purchased gently used for about 2 years now. Excellent mower, would recommend and purchase again. Didn't know about the slow handle engagement. Never had my unit stall out, but this definitely explains why one of the clutch pulleys broke on my unit.

I have a Timemaster for several years. It's an excellent mower in all aspects. It fits right in between a ride on and a 21 inch mower and can make short work out of a decent size yard. I mow almost 1 acre with mine. Cut quality is top notch.

Have had one for two seasons now.Moved up from a 21" Toro.Riding mower takes up too much room in my shed and I don"t mind walking behind a self propelled.Saves me alot of time on my yard from the 21". Excellent mulching even of fall leaves as compared to my old 21" which I always thought did a good job, this one allows me to keep mulching down leaves farher into the fall season,I think this is due to the twin blade system.Eventually leaf cover becomes great enogh that I have to use my blower and leaf VAC.The deck height adjustment is awesome.I have always engaged the blade slowly so never had the stalling problem.Maneuverability is adequate.I always did think the gas tank was small but since I am moving through the yard quicker than with my 21 I am able to be done beore emptying the tank.Overall I would say I wish I had a few more thumbs on my hands to give this great mower.

Thanks for the video. I have a new Toro 30 with about 10 hours on it. It does everything as advertised. I mow about 10,000 feet a week and it saves me a ton of time. The cut is very good and it has no problem with a few hills and inclines.
All in all, I agree 100%

That's great to hear. The time savings is very real. I could easily do my whole yard with this in mulching mode, it is very fast. I would love a bigger gas tank but I have feeling they keep it small to prevent commercial guys using it all day. But at least that issue is easy to deal with at home.

@@joola27 absolutely, it’s still going strong! I’ve not had any problems with it, starts good. The pace setting function is great. My only complaint with it really is that the gas tank is too small. If I fill it completely, I can just barely mow my front and back yard without running out of gas. I don’t have that big of a yard, maybe 40 minutes. But other than that it’s been a great mower.

I've had mine 2 years now and love it! I have about a 10,000 sq ft lawn and it saves me 30-45 minutes over my old 21" mower. I learned about this Toro from The Lawn Care Nut and Ryan Knorr's channels. It's a bit pricey but well under the cheapest riding mower, and cheaper than having a landscaper do the mowing for you. It is kind of heavy but not that hard to maneuver. It would be nice to have a larger gas tank as my yard is just a bit too big to mow in one tank, but I usually double cut so have to refill it anyway. The cut quality is top notch, my yard looks like a green carpet!

I have a 2012 model with the 8.5 HP Briggs. It was a delight to use when it was new. I can't say much for its reliability. I have had some kind of issue every year that I have owned it, causing me at least 2 weeks of downtime each year. Hydrolocking, broken plastic, cables, springs, belts, pukleys, a gas cap that won't stay closed, and even though I regularly change the oil, the piston rings are obviously worn. I have heard that Toro fixed many of the issues, and I'm sure the 10 HP engine helps.

Great Review. I have had my Toro Timemaster for just over 1 year. This mower is a master at striping a Lawn. We have St. Augustine Grass and fertilize it well w/ Scott's Bonus S 3-4 times a year. We have received many compliments on our Lawn. I have a half acre to cut and was cutting it previously well for 15 years w/ a Honda HRX 21 in. I bought this Toro Timemaster to save on cutting time, it does that well. One slight drawback with the Toro Timemaster is that it is borderline heavy. The Toro Timemaster is over 140lbs, while my Honda is less than 90lbs. I am in my 60s and use this yard work as exercise. If you have a flat lawn, you might not notice this much, there are very few spots in my lawn that are flat. We live at the base of the Texas hill country. Plus I bought a Model home that has a lot of plant beds and gardens. So being able to cut around tight corners is critical. This mower does this well, let the mower's engine do the work. I like mowers that can stripe well, both of these mower do a fantastic job at that. Would I buy it again, you bet!!!

Have one and LOVE it, I have no complaints about it’s cutting performance in any mode (including side discharge mode which you didn’t mention). It is a bit heavy and cumbersome but that’s a small trade off compared to its benefits. I also think a lot of people don’t understand how to use TORO’s great Personal Pace system, they don’t understand that you hold the handle and simply walk with it (as you said). Many users seem to think you’re supposed to push down on the handle to engage it which is wrong and will result in the machine doing wheelies and trying to run away from you.

I’ve had my Timemaster for two seasons and am very happy with it. The only minus is that it’s heavy and a bit hard to maneuver. Also, changing the oil is cumbersome. Unlike most mowers, there is no oil drain plug inside the deck. To solve that I bought a $20 siphoning oil change pump from Amazon. The height is also very easy to adjust since there are only two adjustment levers, one for the front wheels and the other for the rear wheels. Cleaning is made easy with a hose attachment that snaps onto the wash port on top of the deck. Just lower the deck to it’s lowest setting and with the water turned on and engine running, run the blades for a minute or so until the water exiting the deck is no longer green.

I bought one when they first came out. Not a trouble free experience. I replaced one of the spindle assemblies about three years ago. I replaced the transmission two years ago. There’s a throttle governor spring that was destroyed by a spruce tree branch so I had to replace it. It does a good job mowing and doesn’t leave those big fat turf tire tracks that zero turns do. Plus it cuts mowing time by 30% over a 21 inch mower. If it blows up tomorrow I would buy another without hesitation.

I have only used the side discharge once on really tall grass, it worked well.
I also have a Honda HRX-VYA which is a fantastic 21" cut for small yards. I prefer the personal pace feature better then the select drive but 200cc with the blade system really does a fine job. I am not a commercial pro. I do my daughter's yard, mine and a couple others on the side.
This may sound odd to some folks and I'm sure the pro's may have comments, But I really like the fact that the Toro's cut height is on the ,25 and .75 of the inch instead of ,50 and 1. In other words with the Toro I usually cut at 3.25 or 2.75 instead of the Honda 3 or 2.5. It seems that that extra .25 at 3.25 makes the grass fuller and holds up better in this Texas heat.

We use them in my lawn care business for small lawns. I actually prefer using them on my own lawn even though I have Exmark zero turn mowers. I have the stripe kit for mine and love the clean strips it produces. I side discharge except in fall when leaves start dropping. I have a fescue/bluegrass mix and live in northern Michigan.

You’re killin me smalls... lol. I’ve been wanting a wide area mower for a while now but life just seems to keep getting in the way. I’m just worried the rider will scalp some spots. But I was torn between the CC600 and this Time master. A local place that we both probably know offered me a screaming deal on a CC600. 10% over cost because they don’t like to sit on inventory over the winter.
I’ve got a Personal Pace 22” now and I’ve worked for National Cemetery for some time and we have almost all toro products. Excellent quality but expensive to fix.

My similar toro broke first mow lol. Small piece of loose root wood shifted the blade housing. Causing blades to strike shroud when trying to make the revolution. Simply had to realign and throw a self tap screen in top hold in place and allow blades to spin freely without contacting the metal front shroud protecting drive components for self propelling parts

I have a 2021, new this summer: So far I like it, but only just.
    PROS:
    1) Does cut nicely
    2) With the side chute bungeed open, it really launches the grass clippings (Normal chute sucks though)
    3) The "personal pace" thing is super easy to get used to.
    4) It can move at a decent pace
    5) Seems to have enough power to get up hills and cut *normal* tall grass.
    CONS:
    1) The tank is TINY! Keep a can nearby.
    2) My drive didn't work. I had to adjust the cable, was easy, like a bicycle brake cable. But still, odd right out of the box.
    3) It doesn't mulch well for me, but I've never had a mower that has. Mulching in my area is only for dry/mid summer.
    4) It doesn't stripe very well. I'm going to try the $200 roller that's available for it.
    5) There's no throttle control. It's either full speed, or off.
Overall I feel it's ok, but I feel like for $1,200 there should more to it. I'd really love throttle control so I can let it idle while I'm picking things up.

I've never used a Timemaster but have had my eye on it for quite some time. The cost though around $1,200 or more was always a concern as I've been accustomed to free mowers that I find in the trash that need little work. Anyway 4 years ago I came across a 36" Craftsman ride on lawn tractor for $180 I think is what I paid. It was a GREAT mower in excellent condition for it's age. However I used it for maybe 1 season and then after that I hardly used it at all. The width was perfect for maneuvering in and out of my backyard and the smaller gates. The typical size for a ride on lawn tractor is 42" which wouldn't have fit in my gates which is why I was happy to find the 36" unit, being 6" wider than the Timemaster. But being a lawn tractor it was still too big and bulky to be practical on my ~1/4 acre lot. So it sat relatively unused. Anyway I sold it this year for $750, quite a decent profit for being exactly 20 years old! And instead I'll continue to use my 21" and 22" Toro Personal Pace mowers as I have two in reserve. My yard takes at least 2.5 hours to cut though with a mower of this size not including other tasks like edging, weed wacking, blowing clippings from sidewalks, driveway, and patio, etc. It's decent exercise though so that's a plus! Being a residential lot of approximately 1/4 acre there is just too much obstacles for a lawn tractor to be super handy which is one of the downfalls, whereas with a push mower you can generally move around obstacles effortlessly without having to make tight turns or back up as with a lawn tractor.

Good review, we use these commercially over the turfmaster mainly because the turfmaster hdx is so slow and the weight is a crew killer, they hold up well for 2 years mowing on average 15-20 yards a day. Over extended use the mower will pull left, but that being said the value and weight to cutting width ratio is the biggest plus. The biggest negative has to be the gas tank. We continue to buy these over the turfmasters.

The 2 blade setup allows the mower to handle long grass which we use everytime for new sods first mow of its life before we put a Scag or Walker on it.... we used cub cadet before and this mower blows it away. I will agree that the gas tank is a bit too small other then that it's amazing....

It’s my belief that majority of the bad reviews come from people who call themselves Lawn Care Professionals... They buy an expensive homeowner lawn mower like the Timemaster, and then they go cut with it commercially and beat the thing into the ground... They try to squeak by and pay $1000 for a mower, when they should be spending much more for a commercial mower... Anything with plastic parts should not be used commercially!!! The Timemaster is an incredible mower for a homeowner/weekend warrior!!!

I’m in the market for upgrading my mower. I:m considering this one, but what is holding me back from dropping a cool grand on a walk behind lawn mower, is I:ve seen several reviews about how it is not good in hilly terrian. Did you notice it being much different than a regular 21 inch mower? The reason for this feedback is the increased weight, the transmission is to weak to pull it up the hill, even with the personal pace. This is just about the perfect solution for me, but I:m going to wait another year before upgrading to see if toro will make this in battery form, if so, it probably wins. Although there is always the allure of a riding mower. At a half acre of grass, and 3,000 soft of garden beds... its a tough choice. Be nice to not wheel barrel around all that mulch etc.

I recently purchased a timemaster mower- loved the machine - cut quality &maneuverability - gas tank is to small- after 3 weeks of mowing approx 5-8 small yards the pulley system blew up - traded it for the turfmaster- it is a good machine - but very heavy - but hopefully it will hold up - I previously have used Honda push mowers - the HRX 217 and the 216 commercial unit - they are both great mowers but the 30” deck does reduce mowing time considerably - more so with the turfmaster - lost time with the timemaster having to refuel
