Look at your power bill, every month you have a delivery fee that goes directly to centerpoint no matter who you use. As a base. Say every home pays $100 a month( low estimate). Multiply that by every home in the greater Houston area. This money is delivery fee, so maintenance on lines and infrastructure. Multiply that big number by 12 months. They make millions and millions in fees, time to open that big bank roll and blow the dust out of it. The state needs to start regulating power on a far greater scale, and make the companies eat the cost without passing on the cost to customers. The "system that led up to these massive power outages" is NOT some aggregation of components and organizations charts - that "system" is PEOPLE. People in powerful leadership positions not only inside of Centerpoint's leadership, but more importantly, executives and decision makers at the Texas Public Utility Commission and the Texas State Legislature who've allowed Centerpoint to operate a monopoly on electric power over in Houston. THAT is where the ire of Houston citizens and elected leaders needs to be directed. And it needs to translate into ACTION by holding those decision makers fully accountable on this matter. Give Centerpoint hell. Give the PUC hell. Give the Governor and the State Legislature hell. Houstonians who've been impacted by these outages need to be relentless and stay focused on this for the long term, otherwise, the next time another natural disaster befalls the Houston area, NOTHING will have changed.

Disagree. Socialist governments have never been good at keeping the power grid on. Look it up. Even the former USSR and East Germany had problems with power delivery. Government-run ones are just as bad, take a look at Puerto Rico.
Florida's grid used to be dodgy until 2004. A series of hurricanes did a number of the grid that year and the for-profit companies realized that it was cheaper to (re)build it right and be proactive than keep throwing duct tape on it. Florida Power & Light honesty has done an amazing job since then, and I say that having absolutely loathed them over the years. Even after a Cat 5 hurricane, 95% of their people were back up within a week. Power doesn't usually go out for Cat 1/2s here now.

They should not have been raking in those numbers if they aren’t investing money in an emergency relief strategy that works. Workers were being paid to do nothing but sit in their trucks when they should have been given clear instructions and the “okay” to begin repairs but it was a level of pure incompetence that allowed this to drag on. This wasn’t the worst natural disaster I have experienced in Houston, and the repairs are taking forever.

People are complaining, but it's not an easy task to get power back online to that many people, in a big city like Houston, so quickly after a Hurricane. The power company has to travel through the affected areas to work on the power lines and that slows them down. Also, they have to think about their safety and not get electrocuted or flooded out and that slows them down. Those households also need to have backup generators, batteries, canned goods, water, flashlights, radios, etc. in a Hurricane prone area with extra fuel. They need to be prepared. They knew it was coming ahead of time. They should have learned from that freeze they had a few years ago when the power grid went down and a lot of people died. In my area with Hurricane Ida a few years ago I was without power for 30 days. My generator and extra supplies were a life saver. In my area most people have backup generators, chainsaws, lanterns, batteries, flashlights, canned goods, barbeque pits, etc. You have to be prepared if you live on the Gulf Coast.

I think it's frustrating for people because this was no hurricane Ike. This was a Cat 1 hurricane and if our infrastructure can't take a Cat 1 what the hell are we paying for?? I think it's a breakdown on several levels. It's obvious that our state government doesn't want to spend the money so they blame it on Center Point. The people don't want to pay higher electric bills so they blame it on Center Point. Where the hell do you think this money for infrastructure upgrades is going to come from?? You can't have it both ways! Either elect officials who will work for the people or stop crying about paying higher bills to cover the cost or stop complaining when you don't have power. There are only so many choices here! Low information voters are never going to elect officials who will work for them so you are left with pay more for your power (to cover the cost of upgrade) or live in the heat unit Center Point can fix things. Take action, cough up the money, or shut up. It's as simple as that.
