    How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a CZcams channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
    How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

    My friend farmer used straw for cow bedding ;one year he hired another farmer to harvest his wheat .The combine was a rotocut model and it cut the straw;my friend roundbale the straw and he worried that the roundbaler would not make round bale with the cut straw;no wonder it made it perfectly but it made for an easier-to-clean bedding!

    Refreshing to see both of you in several videos now. Me thinks Hannah is happy as well. Also, seemed like there was quite a bit of hay leaking. I would have thought it would have been caught and somehow stuffed back in the flow. I've enjoyed every one of your videos. Your channel was the first one I subscribed to many years ago with zero regrets. In fact, great praise.

    Great Video Ryan & Hannah, Interesting project! do the knives loose more material onto the ground? I did notice a small pile of grass just in front of the cut bale! thanks for sharing

    • @HowFarmsWork
      @HowFarmsWork  Před 10 měsíci +2

      Yes it does! That’s because the material is smaller allowing it to fit through the cracks in the pickup. As long as you’re feeding material in the loss is similar to any other baler. I try to start the wrapping as soon as I can once the bale is formed so it reduces that loss.

    Your compaction pressures will affect the volume, even if size is set the same. The janedoe may be set different(less compaction), as well as springout if netwrap is not holding the shape. We found this to be the case on our Claas Uniwrap and our Lely-Welger. Compaction pressure will change your end bale size. Good video tnough.

      The JD was maxed out and the KUHN was at a 4/10. I lowered the density on the KUHN because it’s a newer baler.

  • @MorganOtt-ne1qj
    @MorganOtt-ne1qj Před 10 měsíci

    I bought a processor baler a few years ago. What I learned was about the same % increase in weight, waste was reduced, not necessarily because of palatability, but the shorter cut reduced "drag out" from the hayrings. The cattle only got a mouthful, not a huge clump . Definitely use more netwrap because bales will disintegrate if it tears . Lastly, they make near perfect silage, but getting the wrap off is tricky. You may be saying goodbye to Jane Doe!

    Hi from oz Ryan. Although I’ve run mostly Krone gear (I consider it the best) here are some basic rules. Keep those knives sharp. Sharpen at least every 500 bales (for 4x4 bales). If edge of bale bulges out or falls out, remove the outside knife on each side. This will hold the bale together. When not cutting the knife slots fill with hay material and will not allow knives to rise up. So check and clean slots e very time you go to raise the knives. Some dealers have the grinding jig and wheel to sharpen and charge fee to do. The jig is faster and easier than large angel grinder but are fairly expensive to buy.

    the biggest difference you will see in feed consumption, smaller pieces should yield more in the mouth and less on the ground...which also means more money in your pocket. I think a flat bunk feeder to unroll these bale would also mean less waste.

    If storing hay outside wrapping 4 wraps with net is a good idea. The university of Tennessee did a study storing bales outside and with 4 wraps they determined that you can not justify the expense of any form of cover for the small amount of loss you experience. Even after sitting outside for one year.

    • @HowFarmsWork
      @HowFarmsWork  Před 10 měsíci

      Actually, the density was maxed out on the JD baler and the KUHN was at a 4/10 density to make them more comparable. New balers using belts will always make a tighter bale when comparing max densities.

    • @e.a.bfarms
      @e.a.bfarms Před 10 měsíci

      @HowFarmsWork I agree the kuhn is going to make heavier bales, i just think you should have talked about density when weighing. And i think it would be a good comparison to max them out and see the difference. Also, it would be interesting to see max size weight to see the heaviest bale the kuhn can make.

    Per'ner exactly 16% extra weight Cut vs Uncut. Uncut also had higher moisture, so your dry matter difference is actually a bit over 17%.
    I'm guessing the Cut will continue to lose moisture and the Uncut will not change much.

    • @HowFarmsWork
      @HowFarmsWork  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Cutting will reduce the loss associated with what they won’t eat. Adding density to a bale will make them last longer.

  • @hal8517
    @hal8517 Před 10 měsíci

    By being denser and excluding more air, does that affect the fermentation time of wrapped bales?

    • @HowFarmsWork
      @HowFarmsWork  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I am unsure about fermentation time, but denser bales will have less oxygen, resulting and more fermentation and less energy loss, resulting in higher quality feed.

    • @HowFarmsWork
      @HowFarmsWork  Před 10 měsíci

      That’s the theory. Cutting them increases the palleability and *should* reduce the loss associated with cattle taking bites, pulling their heads away from the feed and dropping it on the ground.
