Think about it: 1. You insulated your garage doors so you can enjoy it when it is cold, 2. You did it yourself for $75. The added cost of armchair experts, 2 cents of criticism each (about 6 cents total), when you add your costs savings if you paid others to it...you are way ahead my friend. Great job. Criticism is like a few drops of water on your face, it drys quickly and no one will notice in 15 minutes.
I did exactly that back in 2009 when we bought our house. Glad to say, it keeps the hot and cold weather out plus is makes my garage door look really nice inside, too! I sit in my garage all year long so, this insulation keeps me happy! I also did it all by myself within a few hours!
At first glance, i read your video title as "Insulting my garage door for under $100 dollars". Still watched in fascination. I really want to do this to my doors.
I love it.......it's my garage and this is the way I did it, and I like it. End of story. Exactly the way I feel.
I did mine with the pink foamular many years ago. Now that I have seen the way you did yours I’m thinking of redoing it! Very nice. And your right about not enough weight to make any difference with the springs. Ignore the CZcams Engineer’s! Looks great! Thanks for the upgrade ideas!
Thank you Mark for making this video. It is by far the cleanest finished product I have seen on any of the videos posted. Good Job Sir.
Saw some people in the comments mentioning spring tension. This is something you should not adjust if you don't know what you are doing. I install garage doors for a living. I work hear for about 2 or 3 people every year who had an ER visit because they decided to wing it and do it themselves without doing a little research. As for the install. The door isn't balanced as well as it was before, but the difference is minor. As long as you can run the door manual, and it doesn't hit hard when it closes you're fine. Pretty much the same results as a pro install for a lot less money.
Nice and I agree the foil side out looks much better. One of those jobs that will pay for itself with heating cost savings.
Excellent! Looks exactly like my door and now I know how to get it done for a great price. Looks perfect! Thanks!!
My wife and I absolutely LOVED YOUR VIDEO!!!! Thank you for sharing your experience. We completed a similar project with an early 70's, screened in patio house. The results with the insulation
was amazing. Seeing your video, I now have my current weekend warrior project. Thanks for leading the direction and way. Nay Sayers...always have little to offer other than their mouth (opinion). Where are the savings, value and benefits? Oh forgot that aspect of what's really relevant? Think before you speak. Show me a way to enhance the comfort of my home for family and I say again... "Thank You".
Great video. Just subscribed.
Now this is too simple and amazing project!!! Why didn't I ever think of this!!! I love it!!!
Good job! Anyone that has the wits to come up with a solution and actually gets it done gets my thumbs up!
That's a rather great idea, and must surely assist with the heating/cooling costs of the main house if the garage adjoins it. It inspires me to get some of that polystyrene board, and insulate my own garage. That'd help with stopping the room above it both getting cold during the winter, and prevent the summer sun baking the garage and leaving a huge temperature swing between it and our SE Michigan A/C controlled house. A project I'd never considered, and now feel I absolutely need to complete!
AWESOME JOB. Love your video. We wanted to insulate our garage door for the longest because we always work on our cars and then its so darn cold in the Garage, and the little electric heater we use in there is working its little heart out and just raise our electric bill. Thank you for all the info. Now we know what and how much we would need. I do NOT understand all these negative comments and thumbs down. Must be internet trolls. Thanks again Mark.
Sitting here freezing my ass off in my 4 seasons room above the garage and i thought "youtube how to insulate my garage door"... found this great video... I'm an old lady but i think i can do this!
I just finished my garage door last night. I followed all your directions, watched the video, and it turned out great. I paid $11.99 a piece for 4 of the 1 1/2 inch R-Tech sheets, and $10.97 for a roll of 3M foil tape. With tax, the job cost me $64. 58. The door is just slightly heavier than before, but even without an opener, it's still no problem to lift it up. It was hot in Washington State today, but my garage stayed cool for the first time in the 50 years I've lived in this house. Thanks Mark!
I am about to do this very job on my 10'w x 8'h garage door here in NC. I am finishing off the "garage" portion of the house. i I knew what to do, but it was nice to see it being done before hand as I am a more "visual" kind guy. Thanks for posting this.
Thank you, you motivated me to get mine done today. $95 including a new razor knife.
Did the same to my Garage door about 20yr ago and it is a fiberglass door I made the panels a friction fit at first but after a while they would move so I did the same as you and i used a foil HVAC tape it helps keep the summer heat out and keep the heat in when its cold out. Nice Job
You did a great job. I'm starting my project tomorrow. Thank you for giving me a ball park figure of the cost. You gave me a good plan to start. Thanks again.
I’ve been wanting to do this on my garage door, wasn’t sure what materials to use. Thank you it’s an awesome video.
Well, I think it looks terrific. You did a bang-up job and you'll be much warmer this winter. Great video as always. 👍👍
I love your comment about telling people that's how it is. Im the same way. Your video was exactly what I needed for my garage door and In my budget. Thank you.
For $75 that’s an going to be great return on investment. Making it warmer in there will keep these great videos coming all winter long!
Nice job! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the public. Since this pandemic is going on, I now have a project to keep myself busy for a while.
I like the project just fine but I really dig the well made video. Easy to follow. Informative. Natural teacher. 👍🏽
I love your ingenuity!! It looks awesome.
This will really work well for you. My garage doors were bought already insulated but I live in the frozen tundra of Canada and have a hanging natural gas heater but I bet that stove works great Keeper as warm as possible Mark
Nice job! Probably an acoustic benefit for your neighbours, too! As everyone knows, your own tools are the sound of industry. Your neighbours tools are a pain! 😀
I watched your video and did my garage door, makes a huge difference! Thanks for sharing
Great video and great idea. I was actually thinking about replacing my garage doors (mine are two singles) with insulated garage doors... but this is a great idea!! And a project I can knock out in an afternoon. Thanks Mark!
There will be a follow up video on the door in about 5 days. Might be a little sarcasm and a rant in it but I go over a few more things about the door.
Thank you Mark,
Loved the Video - your Instructions were perfect. Can’t wait to Insulate our Garage Doors. Living in Az. prevents doing just about anything in the Garage, especially during the Summer and having the Garage’s facing West. Thank you again... My Husband will be very surprised when he gets home and sees what I have done! 😉👍🏼
Hi Patty,
I live in Florida and in the summer my garage really heats up also. Im wondering how the insulation worked for you and did you do anything different?
Insulation worked really well in the summer. Afternoon sun shining directly on the door didn’t heat up the garage like it did before.
Fabulous job! I pretty much have the same door, and I'm going to be doing the same thing! Thanks for sharing your idea.
I did mine the same way when I bought my house though instead of using the correct thickness of foam (my door is about 2" "deep"), I used 1 1/2" foam and then went back over with 1/2" foam as the 1/2" foam is more flexible to get in easier. Very noticeable difference in heat retention though with that foam in place. As an added bonus, it makes the door not as flexible.
Nice job! I just bought a kit tonight from Menard's and plan to do the same this weekend. You made it look so easy! Thank you from New Baltimore, MI!
Menards SKU# 1632500
@@davidrichards5909 thanks great help
I liked it! I bet it goes up and down A LOT quieter too!!! And to hell with these people saying spray foam, the tape is WAY BETTER AND CLEANER!
I have the same problem with direct afternoon sun on my garage door. Thank you for your excellent video. I will be following your instructions to insulate my garage door. Keep up your great videos. Subscribed. 👍2-17-23.
You did a great job, and it already started paying for itself from that moment you applied the tape.
Terrific video ...Anyone who says those foam panels will overload the door haven't thought of solid wood garage doors that weigh TONS apiece.
Nice professional job and it's easy to fix and pop out panels as they age
or get knacked and cut with normal use.
Cool thanks... Wife just bought one of these cheap doors.. Now I can do this before installing the door
I cannot imagine living in your area and having such a flimsy garage door. I live in New England, and we mostly all have 1.5" thick foam filled garage doors. Your door is for someone who lives in a moderate temperature climate. Good thing you placed the boards with the foil side facing in. That way, the heat gets reflected back in, as it tries to escape.
I did foam board on the entire lower level of my split level house (poly iso, a better R value), and then used a roll of 4' wide foil over the foam boards. I was lucky, and got the rolls for free. The guy also gave me many rolls of foil tape. So many, that when I re-sided my house, I first placed foil faced foam boards on the sheathing, and used the foil tape on all of those joints, THEN added new vinyl siding. Now my house is insulated very well, and I save on BOTH heating AND cooling.
Awesome video! Thanks for taking the time to do this!
Thank you for posting what I've been wanting to do to my garage doors.
Nice job. Thanks for posting. I will be doing this to my garage door this winter.
I just finished watching both of your videos, great work man.
Looks great Mark, and now you have given me ideas to do my garage doors, lol!!!
Great job. Thanks for taking the time to share.
I'm in the market for a new garage door to replace the 49-year-old one-panel wooden door that I have, now. I can pay 2.5 times the amount for an insulated door or buy a cheaper one and insulate it myself, as you have done in this video. You made it look so easy and did it by yourself which was an inspiration to me. I'll be getting the cheaper door and will insulate it on my own. Thank you, sir, for thinking of others when making and uploading this video. Your finished project looks superb!
Just make sure your garage door is balanced when done insulating. Just in case the power goes out and you need to open it manually.
@@Marksmisfitworld Great tip! Thank you, again.
I did the exact same thing in my garage. I tested the flammability of both sides, and the foil was a lot less flammable. I was hoping it wouldn't be flammable at all, but it had a very thin plastic coating that burned. The other side was way worse, though. The foil side would go out by itself, while the other side kept burning. I used a thinner board; about a half inch. It's working great.
Nice job sir
Made a big difference in my garage at my previous home. Haven’t done the doors in the new house yet but this video was a good reminder to get it done. My garage has a Mitsubishi heat pump so I have Ac and heat year round the heat isn’t used much as I’m in Florida.
Insulating my doors would help the electric bill as well.
Nice work Mark! You did a top notch job!
Mark, I don't care what you say, I like it! I'm going to do mine. Thanks!!
Looks good and you found a great foil board to use. It will make a big difference in the summer too.
Glad I came across this video. My shop is 30 ft x 30ft. Inulated, radiant heat tube. My door is 16ft wide x 10ft high insulated without reflective backing. I'm thinking I'll replace the door insulation with what you used. 👍👍
Nice presentation. I now have confidence to tackle my installation project. Thank you.
Thank you for this video. I will definitely be doing my garage door the same way. 👍
A fantastic job and looks great! Mine has thin white insulation board but after watching this, I'm doing it better, doing it your way with thicker stuff.
Did the same thing 20 years ago used sheets of 1/2" and 3/4 " foil tape never had any problem opening and closing still have same door opener. A few times had to add a few pieces of tape back on but rarely
Take my word for it, you saved yourself a small fortune.
M Detlef the key word here was fortune...
Love it, keep up the good work. Thanks for the materials list. I'm getting ready to do mine as well!
Outstanding! Thanks for sharing... Just finished mines after watching your video!!
Looks great! I'm going to do the same for mine this coming week. Thanks for the guidance.
I think you did a great job at a great price. Thanks for sharing.
Great tutorial video. I’m going to insulate my garage next week. Glad to find your video.
Thank you! I need to get started on my shop. The Arizona summers are brutal and I need to seal it off to get some air flowing 😀
Nate Osborn hi did you do this insulation? How was it?? I live Az too, my question is , will this foam boards make the garage panel heavy? It might fry my garage door motor while pulling the garage door up.. pls let me know thanks-Bob
Insulating my garage door, $100, not having to hear my wife nag from out in the driveway, priceless
Ill never even have a wife! I’m a woman- but somehow on behalf of my future SO I feel yah 😂😂
🤣 Love this! I'm about to do it to my garage as well so that when my husband is working late in the garage with saws and God-knows what other noisy things I don't have to worse about the neighbors as much. Plus, I hate getting in my car in a cold garage.
Cheri Thrasher just a warning, it will still get chilly, just not freezing like it used to.
HILARIOUS. I cracked up, not to hear your nagging wife anymore
I felt bad, because I thought I was the only one. After seeing your comment and all the likes on it, I realize this is normal
did my garage door just like you did. Came out great. Thanks for the vid and I hear your garage door is from 92. 😂😂😂
Super idea! Love what you've done. Job well done and thanks for the vid.
Thanks for the idea. Definitely plan on following your steps for my future house.
Nice job there. I had done the same thing on my previous garage door (similar to yours) the only thing I did differently was to use a construction adhesive (Liquid Nails) and it was like that for ~12 years with the same 20 year old garage door opener, garage springs, etc... and never once had an issue with anything.
Working in the garage, the Silver helped with the lighting I had to really brighten everything up and I painted the walls with a few coats of high gloss White paint. I have a drain in the middle of the floor, so I could wash the cars in the garage during the winter time while being nice and toasty warm.
Again, nice job with everything you did there!
Great job and lloks good too. I insulated my door with fiberglass ductboard and foil taped the seems. Never thought about the added weight and needing to possibly adjust my spring tension
Great job! For that price I will be doing mine as well. My dogs house is inside the garage and she will appreciate it as well. Thank you!
Do u have air and heat in garage for dog. Thinking of keeping my dogs in garage
Can’t beat the price and looks good too. Good return on investment. Happy holidays.
Great video. I'm going to insulate my garage this weekend. Appreciate the video!!!
Been thinking of doing this for some time, now that I've seen your video, I'm now going to attempt it. Thanks for the info, much appreciated...
I was planning on insulating that door for about 5 years, I just got to it today.
@@Marksmisfitworld if you did it a few years ago it was better
Definitely worth it's weight in gold - probably one of the best $75 spent. You already notice the difference. When we had to replace our wooden garage door, it was a no brainer to go with the insulated tongue and groove door. Big difference in temperature.
Every day I notice the difference because of the insulation. When I have to replace this door it will be with and insulated one.
I'm going to do the same to mine too thanks to you. Thanks.. one is for my old house I'm getting ready to sell and where we live now.
Awesome content, nothing better than watching someone measure. Just mesmerizing.
This has inspired me to do mine, thank you!
Great idea, Mark!
Nice job Mark, Done and done right!
I’m trying to figure out how to keep my piano in the garage. Thank you for this video.
Best looking Garage insulation job I've ever seen.....much better than the stupid kits.
I think You get an A Plus !!!!!Great update to the garage !!!!!!
Mahalo 🌴 thank you, we can’t wait to get started.
Many Thanks Mark. Good job, and well done.
project came out very nice and will make that garage warmer for you. The garage being warmer will also help with the house. Probably save you money in pellets and pay for itself in short order. Nice job as always
I just moved into a new home, three years after this video, Home Depot sells kits now that are grooved to bend already cut to fit width wise And with a little effort You can work the panels in behind all the 2 inch frame work on the door instead of cut and fit. As it stands in this video there are several 20 x 2 gaps in the door to still radiate heat or transfer cold with weep-holes to boot. One box 8 panels fits one car garage for approximately $63.
I got the same door. My garage is insulated but it. Thanks for the video I'm gonna do the same
Great job and thanks for speeding it up for us.......
First time home owner i will be tackling this job soon thanks bud!
Great video. I think I’m going to do mine. Wife and I have been talking about it for years. Lol
We were too, just finally got around to it.
Nice job. I appreciate you taking the time to make the video.
What’s unique about your approach versus the other videos is you showed how the cutting is done. Thank you for that. Also you showed how the taping is done. Awesome!
For myself, I’m not sure I’d do the taping: it looked like a lot of work. Maybe it doubled the job. However:
- I have seen videos that show some of heat is transferred in those spots that you taped so that should help keep the heat in or out.
- the door looks really good as it’s all one shiny space age color rather than shiny panels with none shiny parts.
So I’ll probably do it the same way you did. Thank you!
The taping made a difference in my door. Before the taping I could feel a small amount of heat coming in around the edges. Not anymore. If you put the tape on in shorter lengths instead of trying to tape the whole length of the panel with one long strip, it works a lot better.
Great video! Helped me a lot!
looks great. Lived in our current home for 15 years this August, still have yet to do this. Hubby always talks about doing it but never gets around to it>
Excellent work! thanks for the tips
When you apply foam that has foil on it, the foil should face the direction that the heat is coming from. If it gets hot outside, and you want to reflect heat out, and keep the inside of the garage from getting warmed up, then the foil should be facing the other way. If you're in a cold environment, and you want to reflect heat back into the house, then the foil should face inward.
If the product anything like Foilboard, then the green side and silver side equally reflect heat. For garage installation, they recommend silver side facing inside to brighten the garage space.
I enjoyed the video and will insulate my garage soon. Thank you
