Insulating a garage door better than the pros!

- My garage door has been insulated for a while now, but it is UUUGLY! I am going to revamp it with a little help from the 3D printer. I searched for a long time for an insulation solution that looked good and had a nice high r value, but couldn't find anything I really liked. I think I have come across a really great, DIY solution for getting this job done. I hope you find the video helpful and entertaining. thanks for stopping by!
Here is a link to my etsy store, where you can purchase the clips.

The clip-on system looks easy. I prefer to use the seal silver tape as it seals out the seams/space where the panels are laid into. By doing it this way you can achieve a better insulation for thermal as well as noise. There are tape brands that once you apply it, it is permanent.
Clips are available on my etsy store! I had to change the design a bit to get them to print well. The fit and function are the exact same though. Thanks! Link in the description!
Looks nice 👍
That looks great!!!
Great job and video, thank you!
Of course I hope you realize that the insulating panels silver side is the optimum for not radiating heat or absorbing heat. By painting with white you reduce that radiation barrier. i.e. the mirrored surface is better than the white for a radiation barrier.
Thats all true, but the gains in efficiency were outweighed by the aesthetic of painting. I also film in my garage and the reflective surface is no fun for that. I could have painted the other side, but it would have taken two coats because of the dark lettering on white background. Thanks for the comment!
nice DIY
Job looks tight. Really good looking install. 👍🏽
Thanks! I am really happy with how it turned out.
Nice video. I agree with others that the foil side probably should have been towards the outside. Likely more heat from the outside in summer to want to keep out, then heat in the garage in the winter to keep in. Also agree that painting the foil side would reduce that effect. Overall probably better to have the foil facing the outside, and then to paint the other side.
Either way with the paint, I wonder if it would have been less work to paint the entire sheet before cutting.
Well done! Keep up the good work!
Thanks!
Thank you. You seem like a good, down-to-earth guy.
Thanks!
wow, nice job and it looks great!
Thanks!
just bought some clips, well done sir!
Awesome, thank you!
Great job, subscribed!
Thanks!
Thank you
Very nicely done ! Those clips are genius. Yeah, I hadn't been thinking extra weight (but I guess it adds up) and spring upgrade, excellent point. EDIT : Ah, saw the post insulated weight in your comment answer below.
Thanks! I was pretty happy with the clips idea. I was getting really close to just using double sided tape, but I hated that idea. I think my original garage door spring was undersized in the first place and so adding the extra 30 lbs was just too much. Maybe had the springs been more appropriatly sized in the first place I would have been able to get away without changing them, not really sure. Thanks for the comment!
The paint looks good. It might also make the door safer. The outer layer of these panels is flammable. The paint might make it harder to ignite.
"I'm going to take these out, save them in my basement for 3 or 4 years and then throw them out. That'll be fun." Hahahahhahahahah. 😂
The silver REFLECTS. If in a Hot environment, REFLECT the heat AWAY from the house. If in a Cold environment, REFLECT the heat INWARDLY to the environment you want to keep warm.
I would never dare to adjust a tension spring on garage door. I have trouble even baiting one of those old wooden rat traps with the spring release action.😂😂😂
Those clips work pretty good. I wouldn't trust plastic I'd want something more permanent myself.
Mine are still holding up great and I haven’t received any complaints from customers about clips breaking or deforming with heat…knock on wood!
I wouldn't expect the paint to adhere to the aluminum foil for any length of time . Temperature changes and flexing will take their tole. Other than that , nice job!
Thanks! No bubbling or peeling yet!
And subscribed 👍
Thank you!
I can't find your etsy link amd it's driving me crazy. I want to place an order 😎
Glad to hear the interest! The link is in the video description, but here is a link!

Thanks!
Those clips are nice. Just about all garage door panels are the same and have that lip. So you could sell those as universal fit. But id make them a tad bit wider. Width 1"1/2 and the small tab that holds the insulation in, make it 3/4-1" in . Maybe sell a kit of 6 per panel. Why didnt you paint the panels prior to installation? It would have been faster and way easier.
Thanks for the comment and input. Painting would have been easier before installing but it wasn’t horrible painting after install. 👍
Might put in an order for these clips! Also where did you get that kind of insulation?
I got the insulation from home depot, i still need to get a listing up for the actual clips! Right now it is just a 3d model that i have listed on etsy! I think i will have the clips listed in a week or so.
@@ShawMade366 nice! I’ll keep checking for updates. What is the insulation called at Home Depot and brand?
Its called pro select r matte plus-3 and it is made by rmax 👍
I want your clips dude. Great video
@@ShawMade366 I left a note on Etsy but no response. To do my garage/s I need 100 clips. When and if you produce them can you let me know and indicate a price. I'd really appreciate it
👍👍
Hi Shawn, I bought your clips but they are not compatible with my door as the lip on the door is much thicker. Can I send you a pic? Was wondering if you could make some clips that would work. Thanks
Thats too bad the clips aren’t fitting. I will email you.
You weighed the uninsulated door…did I miss the weighing of the newly insulated door? What was it?
I didn’t weigh it all together before i put the springs on. Not sure why! I did weigh the foam though and it was just under 30 lbs
Radiant barrier doesn't work if it's painted. You could have bought insulation without the foil and saved money.
Went to your Etsy store. I see I could select a quantity from 1 to 10 but I was unable to determine how many individual clips I would receive if I selected a Qty of 1. If I select a Qty of 10 the price is $165.00 Yikes. Either they are gold plated or a Qty of 1 is for more than one clip.
Haha. Its 32 clips per pack! Thanks for the interest! I just looked at the etsy post and it looks like it didn’t say the quantity per pack anywhere! That is fixed! Thanks for telling me!
I may have heard a story (about a friend. yeah, a friend) who tried to tension the spring on his new garage door install with a piece of rebar and a screwdriver. Later, he MAy have been overheard telling his wife, "Honey, I need you to take me to the ER." as he walked into the kitchen with his hand wrapped in a shop rag.
Condolences to “your friend”. I was at 100% full clench when I did mine. Definitely not a job for the faint of heart!
Curious- did you do this for sound, or temperature? Did you note the change in temperature?
Temperature. It makes a huge difference for both cold and hot days, though i didnt measure anything before and after. I can heat my garage with a little 15 amp space heater now, before insulating, i couldnt keep it warm with 2 heaters. Im not sure about any difference with sound. Im sure it help a little though.
Great info and video. Hope you didn't get in any trouble for putting your wife on blast like that. Let me know if/when you ever start selling those clips. You should get a patent and pitch the idea to all the Home Improvement stores. You could retire early!
Haha. The wife said she was cool with it, hopefully nothing changes on that front. I am going to start producing the clips eventually, i will post a comment on the video. Thanks for the comment and positive feedback!
Yes I agree . You should market them. I would certainly buy, especially since i and most people dont have 3D printers.
Dallin, did you get a utility patent for these
Not yet. Im terrible about that kind of thing. 😁
Definitely need a heavier spring
Yep, I replaced the old one with a couple new ones. Works great!
What kind of insulation panels are they ?
I got the board from home depot. Its called pro select r matte plus-3 by Rmax
So how much weight did you add!?
A little under 30 lbs.
How thick foam did you get
2”
@@ShawMade366 thank you!
I'm sure it still works fine but reflective surfaces reject heat. So by painting it the surface becomes more heat absorbent
I agree, reasonably said!
There's very little heat coming at the door from the inside. White is pretty reflective too.
What is the heat source inside the garage?
I'd have just used non-expanding foam as an adhesive in those seams you cut and taped over to hide the line. Paint would have concealed most of that anyway. No way I'd have done that job twice just for that. At the end of the day, it's just a garage.
I work and film out there full time, so the appearance was more important to me! 👍
@@ShawMade366 Understood.
Where did I get the clips?
Here is a link to my etsy store where you can get the clips!
shawmadedesigns.etsy.com
What is the insulation material?
2” foam board from homedepot
Clips might deform if it gets too hot
They haven’t yet. I have also sold clips to people down in texas and arizona and havent heard any negative feedback from them, knock on wood!
Could have made a big green screen... just sayin
Says sold out. When will you have more ?
Soon! I am hoping to get the printer going today and have some by tomorrow.
What was the weight difference?
About 30 pounds.
@@ShawMade366 Did you have to make any adjustments with the spring for that?
I did. I replaced the one spring, with two springs. My old spring was already undersized for my door, so I dont know if i would have needed to if it had been appropriately sized.
How is it holding up? In hot environment these clips may not live long
So far so good for me. We are typically only in the 90s during summer but we will occasionally have a few days above 100. my garage door is painted black on the outside, which adds a lot if heat! Everything is still great! 👍
To Do it the proper way? Just to take the bolts out of the hinges & insert/replace one panel at a time.
Also? It looks like you need to add another Spring on the left side…
That type of spring can have more torsion added to it, BUT it should only be done by someone who knows how. And I don't mean someone who thinks they know. Torsion springs can eat your lunch if not handled properly. (from a third Generation Door Installer)
hope no one tells him the foil should be facing the door.
I hope nobody tells me that either, especially considering that it is wrong, per the manufacturer.
It depends on where he lives. If he's insulating against a cold environment the silver side faces inward and the other way for hot environment. But, painting it reduces the reflectivity that keeps radiant heat inside.
Per manufacturer: " Boards can be installed with either the silver or white side out. For additional radiant barrier properties, install silver side against air space if one exists."
Agreed!
@evilbonsai keep your day job. A contractor you're not
up north where it gets ungodly cold(all this last week it's been a balmy MINUS 30F)whereas last Fall it was triple digits HIR & HUMID - then what?
Cool invention but really, dude, it’s a garage.
I work full time from my garage, so it was a more important project for me. 👍
I found you from Instagram 🤘keep u the good work. #newsub
Thanks! Yeah i have a little welding video that is going nuts for me over there on insta. Pretty cool. Thanks for the sub!
