    Scholes was a sensational player but Gerrard was just something else. My mother is a Liverpool fan and I will always remember how Gerrard being in the starting line-up inspired her to believe that Liverpool were going to win, no matter the opponent. Only a special player can foster that kind of belief in people who know fine rightly they aren't the best team but can beat anyone if he plays a blinder.

    Scholes came out and said what Liverpool fans have been saying for years - SCHOLES was a Great player - World class, best passer, and unbelievable IQ, always in space but defending? he had ROY Keane playing right next to him he wasn’t a CDM - every time he slapped in a challenge he got a yellow card…… similar with Lampard he had makelele, Essien and obi mikel. Gerard played CDM, CM, AMF, RM…. Had a world class midfield around him for like 2/3 years maybe when he had Alonso and marcherano. Funny when he had that around him for those two years he got he’s closest ever in winning the league. The dude was Roy of the Rovers (youngstas won’t get this)

  • @gladiatorscoops4907
    @gladiatorscoops4907 Před 9 měsíci +40

    They were both absolutely wonderful players but both had their edges in terms of ability:
    Scholes was ahead of Gerrard in terms technical ability, positional awareness and reading of the game.
    When it comes to passing I think Scholes had the smallest edge in his short range passing, but its so minimal - both were excellent passers and could dictate play with their range of passing. I'd argue Gerrards long balls were a fraction better than Scholes, not only could he ping it from deep but he was excellent at crossing on the run.
    Both as we know were great goal-scorers both scoring many spectacular goals - very hard to call who was better from this pov other than looking at the stats
    But the biggest difference between them was Scholes never had the same level of athleticism as Gerrard. From an engine pov Scholes is nowhere near peak Gerrard. We all know that Gerrard could run all day, one of the best engine's I have ever seen in European football.
    Also Gerrards versatility, he could play anywhere on the park, he was an effective wide player if needed because he had the pace to beat his man, the crossing ability and the engine to go up and down. Scholes was nowhere near as effective in those kind of areas.
    Also worth mentioning was one of the most underrated aspects of Gerrard was his speed in his peak years. I once saw him outpace Agbonlahor in a straight half pitch sprint when Agbonlahor had come on as a sub. I've seen Gerrard keep up with Kaka, and outpace Andy Johnson who was pretty fast in his time.
    Also yet to mention - Scholes tackling ability was a running joke for football pundits and commentators, where as Stevie G was a colossus when it came to tackling and the physical side of the game.
    BTW - Im an Arsenal fan, so no real bias here.
    I also think the better argument to have than Scholes vs Gerrard is Scholes vs De Bruyne

    • @liberalslayer7220
      @liberalslayer7220 Před 9 měsíci +1

      He was past his peak in terms of speed by then and struggled with his fitness too at that point. Remember Redknapp stating that over longer distance sprints Gerrard was quicker than Owen.

    Scholes achieved more, but Gerrard was so complete. Athletically, he had more; was fast, he could tackle, great in the air, he was strong, not to mention he legendary engine. You might say Scholes had a better touch, but Gerrard had a greater range of passing. Scholes controlled games more with his metronomic passing, but he never took games by the scruff of the neck like Gerrard did, putting the team on his back. Gerrard was more of a match winner, goals and assists/ clutch moments. He was certainly a better goal scorer. Tactically, Scholes probably had more in terms of reading the game, although defensively, Gerrard probably had more (Scholes often looked exposed when he had players running at him and had to make a tackle). There are things Scholes is better at, there are things Gerrard is better at, but if you look at their weaknesses, Gerrard doesn’t really have any, and all the things Scholes does better, Gerrard still does really well. You can’t really say that about Scholes. Not to mention what Gerrard offered as a leader of men. I think Scholes’s assessment is correct.

    Oh dear Andy. Did he just say Yaya Toure could’ve broken Lampards goal record as a midfielder if he’d been here longer?
    Just for context, Toure had 7 seasons in the premier league where he played 25 or more league games and 30+ games in all competitions in those seasons. In those 7 seasons, he got into double figures in the league twice, and in the other 5 seasons, he scored 6 goals in the league every year. His goal record was 1 in 4 for city, which is very good for a centre midfielder, but his goal scoring is nothing compared to Lampard.
    Lampard scored double figures in goals in the league for 10 seasons straight. 03/04 through till 12/13, he scored 10 or more league goals. He scored 15 or more league goals in 3 separate seasons from midfield, and in all competitions, Lampard scored 20+ goals in six different seasons. At 35 years old, Lampard scored 15 league goals in 29 games.
    In comparison, when Toure was 35, he played 2 games for olympiacos in the Greek league.
    Lampards goals record for Chelsea was 211 in 648. He averaged 1 in 3 over a far larger scale of games.
    Lampard is head and shoulders above all other midfielders as the greatest goal scoring midfielder ever

    The best 10 central midfielders in prem history are actually quite easy to name in no particular order, if you were to say Keane, Viera, Gerrard, D. Silva, KDB, Scholes, Lampard, Fabregas, Yaya, Kante...you'd get very few dissenting voices on that opinion.
    Putting them in order or nailing it down to a Top 5 becomes a minefield cos it brings in all sorts of biases that we all have as football fans.

I think Gerrard was the more complete midfielder who won games on his own for Liverpool which is something Scholes couldn't do himself as Scholes himself explained but then Gerrard couldn't do what Scholes always did set the tempo of the game spraying accurate passes constantly the intelligence the footballing IQ that Scholes processed was unbelievable.
