Thank you so much for featuring Carol Adlam. I had no prior knowledge! She is both an exceptional artist and author and a most pleasant commentator. Superb and brilliant.

I am left wondering why AL effectively turned her back on Eliza...her first love and school hood friend, what did Eliza do to deserve this besides feed AL with regular money, it seems quite heartless on AL's part. I wish this question had been asked given our huge interest in all things AL.

I totally agree with your comment, concerning Anne Lister‘s relationship with Eliza Raine. I muss confess that Anne had used Eliza for her own financial benefit, nothing more. Eliza was so kind hearted woman, an Indian descendent with english blood running in her vanes. I imagine she must had been very pretty lady, completely fidel to her love and commitment to Anne Lister, secret marriage! What a cold hearted Anne Lister just treated Eliza so terribly. I felt very sorry for Eliza how her life determinate in asylum. Very shameful and degrading because of skin color! Amazing but true. Eliza‘s would have different if Anne stayed with her. At that time it was about wealth and money!

The way women had to live in those days would drive any woman insane--esp. if LGB.

I feel that Mariana WAS the bullet directed at Eliza. She wanted her out of Lister's picture, Imo. Mariana knew how to rid Eliza, via her own family of mental health professionals. Mariana certainly knew how that system worked. Just a different slant that tickles my fancy.
