Such a beautiful place but it’s plagued with depression, alcoholism and suicide. Is it because of lack of sunlight, constant cold, poverty? I would love to visit and enjoy the environment, hike, experience the culture and just be pleasantly peaceful.
That’s so hard for me to speak to, not being someone who is Greenlandic or Inuit. A few things that I’m aware of: a 2009 study that linked higher suicide rates in the summer to insomnia due to the 24 hour sunlight. And also we know the links between poverty and suicide anywhere. As we were there we were shocked to hear the many cruise ships did little to support the locals and created infrastructure needs while not raising poverty levels. We stayed in Nuuk and Ilulissat at night after the ships left and heard, more than once, that “the ships come in, people swoop in and touch everything (accidentally break a few things), and swoop back out to spend money on the ship.” There are also livelihoods that are made in the winter and are dwindling with climate change. We saw that first hand with a local couple who own a dog sled center. And a fisherman who took us out to see whales. I know their government has created programs to try to help those with depression and I hope they work. We found the local people to be wonderful and the locations breathtaking. I recommend highly. We only saw so little of the country and would love to see more.
