The deadline wouldn't fix things, Gamefreak always had issues with game design. They struggle to see issues and being relatively small means there isn't enough variety to discover these till it is too late.
It was only when they built on the Pokemon engine 3+ times in a row did things get stable and function as intended and not have massive oversights. Look at their spin offs or non-Pokemon games and you can find glaring issues.
Heck one of the simplest exploits in Arceus is don't fight the bosses just throw more sand for an easier fight and stuff like Speed Buff into a Strong Attack. Both things are incredibly easy to find for outsiders but insiders struggle with.

The thing I found most interesting about the DLC's story was the meta elements going on with Kieran.
Like, we all know how it goes with Pokemon. You show up, you battle people, you hear about the new legendary and it decides it wants to be your friend, and all your opponents and rivals come to respect you and be your friend too- and that's exactly how the Teal Mask went.
...Except that Kieran didn't become your friend. Instead, he had the much more realistic reaction of being FRUSTRATED by losing to you over and over. Here in Indigo Disk, he says how WEIRD it is that his sister, who hates outsiders, somehow became best friends with you. Not only that but he talks about how unfair it is that Ogerpon, the Pokemon he loves, the Pokemon that ONLY he loved, that everyone else treated like a monster, that he's been totally obsessed with... decided to befriend YOU, a complete stranger that only heard about it like 5 minutes ago.
He starts acknowledging how unfair it is, that you win EVERY battle, befriend EVERY enemy, and catch EVERY legendary. In the final battle against him, he even had the line when I got a crit against him "You're still lucky even NOW?! What are you, the main character or something?!" So of course he immediately acts to try and get SOMETHING for himself, and chucks the Master Ball at the legendary, because of COURSE, even though he's the one that found it and pulled it from it's resting spot, OF COURSE it takes one look at you and wants to be your friend instead of his, and OF COURSE that set him off.
...Oooof course then it takes that interesting idea, that leaning on the fourth wall, and doesn't DO anything with it. After that, he's your friend now, same as everyone else. Even though he frankly got robbed of the legendary he rightfully earned and deserves. You can always count on Pokemon to squander it's potential and interesting ideas.

YES I loved that there was finally a rival who got so frustrated by losing and became worse for it. As much as I'm glad Kieran got a little arc and is now our friend, I do wish they had leaned even more into it and I hope they have a character like him in the future that we can be with longer term so that we can actually see that dislike instead of having it resolved so quickly.

I see what you're saying about Kieran's arc being a bit meta and a more realistic reaction, but I think they told the exact story they wanted to tell.
The DLC did acknowledge how easy/lucky you have it as a protagonist more than it usually does, which made Kieran's frustration understandable...but he got so jealous and angry and obsessed that he lost any joy from battling and he took it out on everyone else.
The main theme of this game is finding your treasure...but not becoming so obsessed with it that you hurt or disregard the people and creatures around you.
Maybe someday we'll get a Pokemon story that plays around with the protagonist role and the other characters more, but at the end of the day, the moral of every Pokemon game is always gonna be a different flavor of "the real becoming a Pokemon Master was the friends we made along the way".
(If anything, it's one of the most direct meta morals that could be levied at toxic competitive players - "Yo, don't be so obsessed with winning that you can't enjoy anything else".)

They strip all the content we’ve had for decades (and the actual Pokémon!) and then give it to us at the end of a dlc pack with some other neat new things that I don’t even feel like playing around with, cuz like you said, I’m mostly done and a new game is probably right around the corner.

I think the same goes for the caves in the DLC, the base game caves are really lacking.
Now I don't think the "3rd game" model was good either, but at least they always provided an improved experience of the base game with some things on top so a lot of the problems with the original pair of games didn't exist at all or were mitigated in the 3rd version, so especially in retrospect you could just buy the 3rd version to get the definitive experience.
Gen5 gave us sequels instead, and those were amazing but the originals weren't actually in that much need of fixing either so the gen as a whole works well. Then in Gen6 we get XY which definitely needed a lot of improvements but didn't get them at all. In Gen7 for some reason they released two "3rd version"s which at the same time both improved and broke things depending on who you ask.
And finally we're at the DLC system we have now in Gen8 and 9, which do diddly squat to the shitloads of problems that the respective base games have in favor of just providing new stuff in its own separate bubble. I really don't think the DLC's are worth their money, maybe half of their cost at most. At the very least they should fix the major problems of the base games on top of the new content then _maybe_ I could consider them worth the money but probably not. I just think it sucks that we now are just stuck with the pretty bare-bones base games when before it was at least possible to get a much better quality experience, eventually.

I honestly thought you wouldn’t enjoy the Area Zero part of the Indigo Disk. The storyline once it got to that part felt kind of like a nothing-burger, almost an afterthought.
Terapogos is unexplored almost entirely. It’s powers and the whole Astral type thing just feel like a gimmick rather than expanding the Terastal phenomenon lore. And then it just randomly has time powers, that are only shown for that one professor cutscene.
We also get little info into the true nature of Paradox Pokémon. For example, how did Heath the explorer come across various Paradox species in an era where Terapogos was asleep and the time machine didn’t exist? Where did they come from?
I was really let down in that department, but I’m glad you had fun with it.

    • @Highstar25

My assumption is still that terapagos is the legendary of imagination, since A: they drop the word imagination like 7 more times in the DLC, B: if the scene where you speak to the professor is real it would create a whole new level of time paradox, and C: the NPCs in kitakami talk about other people at the lake in the past also being able to speak to images of the deceased. These three points indicate to me that terapagos simply gives people want they want to see from their imaginations. In the protagonist's case, we wanted an explanation for what has occurred, so it made up a convincing illusion of a resolution that still hides tera energy's true nature from human understanding.

    • @flerken4233
      @flerken4233 Před 3 měsíci +13

The secret cutscene at Kitikami in the post-game basically explains it through exposition. Terapagos has the ability to transport people and Pokemon through time AND other timelines that went through different evolutionary pathways, which are what Paradox Pokemon are. I assume Terapagos was only asleep in present day when Professor Sada/Turo met it, but it was awakened when Heath was in Area Zero- which explains how he say Terapago's Stellar Form and how he was transported into another timeline and saw Paradox Pokemon there.
The Time Machine basically is needed to harness Terapagos's power while it is sleeping, Terapagos can do that on its own.

    • @Highstar25
      @Highstar25 Před 3 měsíci +13

@@flerken4233 that theory doesn't really provide an explanation for any of the pokedex entries in the opposite versions, the drawings/photos in the scarlet and violet books predating the appearance of the paradox forms associated with them or the actual paradox of the 'time machine's existence in the first place.
It also seems really absurd to have a legendary embodying the concept of time, a mythical embodying the concept of time travel and then another random pokemon (of which there were apparently many in a previous age) that can time travel but even moreso AND can create a whole bunch of other non-time-related phenomena.
Also if that one terapagos was responsible for everything, those phenomena would stop working whenever it was in it's ball. I think the reason they mentioned that there were many terapagos in the ancient past is because there is no individual creature responsible for tera energy, but rather thousands of sleeping terapagos that are dreaming while creating potential energy that can be tapped into to realize all sorts of goals.
That energy is shown being used as a tool for battling, as a means of creating/sourcing paradoxical forms of Pokémon, as a standard energy source, as a means of empowering ancient rituals and even as a way of turning Ogrepon's fighting spirit into matter. Mere time travel can't explain all of those various abilities.

@@KruelAidManthe one thing about the paradox in the game I question is why it’s not complete. When you speak to the professor on the mountain they can give you the scarlet or violet book, which then means either that book gets sent back in time later so it can be used as the time machines key, or they just make a new book.
And then as a side tangent about Terapagos, the myth Terapagos is based on pretty clearly cements its time travel connections so that is likely the actual explanation for the paradox Pokémon, however that doesn’t necessarily have to be travel within our timeline, I believe the professor suggests such in Kitakami, where I believe they bring up the idea of alternate timelines, which Pokémon is no stranger to.
Pokémon being pulled from alternate times or timelines then pretty clearly would seem to be the paradox Pokémon’s explanation.
And as for how they got to the crater when Heath explored it. Since Terapagos already pulled the professor to the mountain without us asking it to, that would imply it was doing it on its own, the question then is why, why would it be summoning someone from the past to give them knowledge of their own work. Perhaps Terapagos is trying to create the paradox. What if Terapagos was pulling the paradox Pokémon to Area Zero in order set the motions in order that would lead to the scarlet book being made and eventually the Time Machine. That then leads the question why? Consider that another one of Terapagos’s actions during this was showing Heath their true form, and the fact that Terapagos is trapped at the bottom of Area Zero. It wants its existence to be known, perhaps so that it can be found. Perhaps Terapagos is creating this infinitely looping paradox so that it can be freed from the underdepths where it’s been trapped and alone for all these years, after all if there was more of them and this may be one of the last it would possibly be quite lonely. This would also explain why Terapagos runs towards the player after being released, not just because it friendly or because you’re the protagonist, but because the entire paradox was to lead to this moment before resetting on the top of Mount Kitakami.

About the meeting with the professor at the lake, it's probably not a "bootstrap loop" like many people think, and there are 3 very important details to establish this:
    - the professor him/herself mentions different timelines as soon as he arrives, as to hint that he's from one of those and not YOUR past
    - the professor gives you their book, the same book they had since childhood, since it has their name written on it with a "childlike" handwriting. The issue here is that Arven also has that exact book from the beginning of the game, so either the professor had 2 of them (unlikely, since they claim that it hurts to give it away, but why would it if they had 2?) or, more likely, there was only one book but "yours" was from a different timeline
    - the most important detail is that in the notes found while descending area zero, the professor claims to first create the time machine and THEN Arven was born, while the one at the lake claims to already have a son but the time machine still isn't working.
If this is true, it implies various things:
    - Terapagos, or at least the crystals/terastal energy can create links between different timelines
    - the time machine should be renamed "timeline gachapon with built-in desire sensor"
    - maybe, since the professor from the other timeline had Arven before the time machine was completed, this time they'll prioritize him over the research, MAYBE

The Terarium and quests is honestly the most satisfying gameplay loop I’ve had in this game, maybe in a main series Pokémon game in general, but the actual story content definitely let me down a good bit especially when compared to base game, so how much one likes Indigo Disk likely depends on what they prefer in their Pokémon games

I know this isn't how the game process works for Pokemon (SV was likely in development when SwSh went out), but I like to think that they saw how much everyone hated the SwSh story that they turned the SV story dial up to 11 because they absolutely delivered in all aspects.
I'm so glad to hear you also didn't like Teal Mask very much - after I played it, I straight up told my friend not to buy the DLC because it wasn't worth it, from the trainers being under leveled to the story literally dragging you along and giving you the illusion of choice with Kieran to the first DLC just not really adding that much besides more Pokemon to catch - it just wasn't enough for me personally. But after Indigo Disk and the epilogue, I do think the DLC is worth it, especially if you like these games as much as I do, but I very much agree with you in that if you're not into SV/on the fence, it's not worth getting because it won't change your mind.
I do wish they would give SV another year, whether that's with DLC in fall or whatever, because I do really like these characters and feel like there's still so much to explore story-wise - it's fun being the kind of person who plays Pokemon for the story (I've been suffering lmao). Also, the epilogue was fun and wacky, but it was super short and I wanted more of the full gang together. Plus, if they give SV another year of content, it'll give whatever the next Pokemon game is time to cook and we all know they need as much time as they can get with their track record lately.
If this is the end of SV content, then I very much feel exactly how I felt after the base game ended: I can't believe how much I love this terrible, barely functioning game. Like they nailed it with story, characters, and music, but good god the game isn't even finished! And it's not like they have any reason to finish any future games because SV was insanely successful, but it's so frustrating to see how much heart and soul they put into these games only to be held back by The Pokemon Company NEEDING to have a Christmas release. I really can only hope that they see how much people love the story and characters they've created and keep it up with the future games - I am just praying for them to be remotely finished, like PLEASE.

What would normally take your average player a few measly hours took me over 25. I explored every inch of the map, battled every trainer and caught every new Pokémon I saw.
Plus I had a lot of fun (except for the random lag spikes while traveling through the savanna area marshes and the BBQ’s).
Despite the performance issues, I’d place Scarlet and Violet alongside some of the best in the series. I’ve had a lot of fun and the almost 200 hours of gameplay backs that up.

@@neatonateAdressing your first question, I think you nailed it on the head.
It is a combination of both and it probably influenced my opinion. The changed formula was such a breath of fresh air. But I also enjoyed other aspects of the games. From it’s interesting characters to dynamic geography.
For reference, I have played and owned every mainline Pokémon game (besides Let’s Go) since Platinum.
      My favorite games are B2W2.
Legends: Arceus was a truly incredible experience from both a gameplay and artistic standpoint. I hope this formula is repeated and that another Legends game is made in similar quality.

Given how shoddily the game is put together, the once basic features sound like they were cut for spare time as opposed to money-grubbing (even though the result is the same). Theoretically, sure, a free update would be nice. But when you’re building your DLC in mind with how you attain these features, it would kind of break the game if you could also get it outside said areas. So now they become paywalled. This studio/company is a mess all around. This is just one blemish on a wart-ridden foot.

I'm not saying I disliked the overarching story of the DLC or thought it was bad, but it feels inconsistent. Like, the overall pacing feels weird. Like it was meant to be three parts. The whole thing with Area Zero doesn't even feel connected to the rest of the Blueberry Academy, like I thought Terapagos was going to be revealed to be the big glowy orb above the Terarium, that the BB Principal whose name I forget or Briar was going to be this surprise bad-guy at the end (they did it twice before with Lusamine and Rose; I'm not saying I was expecting it, but it feels weird that Scarlet and Violet didn't have a villain or villain-team per-say, like they did the Team Star as the red herring villain team like with Teams Skull and Yell but there wasn't actual villain), Kieren was kind of a villain in a sense but mostly he was a bit of a jerk (like I felt bad for him in Teal Mask and I wanted to give him Ogerpon, but Indigo Disk made me want to give Kylo Ren here a swirly; like part of me wanted more to tell-off Carmine in Teal Mask than anything else). The Pecharunt event, not that I didn't like it, it felt disconnected from everything else; it would've tied-in better with the Teal Mask part of the DLC, like "the real bad guy was Pecharunt all along, he was controlling the Loyal Three, oooooh spoooooky". I liked the BB Elite 4. I liked all the little flavor all these npcs from both the base-game and DLC get in the post-game with the League Club Room, the way they converse and interact with each other; I feel like they didn't have to do that, they could've just had each one standing off to the side by themselves. I still can't believe they pulled a Persona 4 epilogue photo on Team Star. A couple miscellaneous criticisms I have:
    - The new Paradox Pokemon should've been added to the spawn list in Area Zero rather than just be a lone encounter. If you want to swap one with your friend who has the other version, that's it, there aren't any more.
    - The Hisuian Pokemon you can get in both parts of the DLC feel really inconsistent. Like, you see Hisuian Quilfish and think "oh, there must be other Hisuian Pokemon here", but no. Stantler you can get in Kitakami can't evolve into Wyrdeer despite having the same requirements as Quilfish to Overquil (learning a move), I would argue Basculin to Basculegion's method is more convoluted. Kleavor I can kind of get why they made them wild encounters in the Terarium, but also then you wonder why they couldn't they do the same for regular Ursaluna. Also, for those with standard Hisuian or other regional forms, like it feels weird a lot of them aren't in the game while some are. Hisuian Zoroark was a pre-order bonus for the DLC. It feels weird and kind of unfair.
    - Outfit and character customization still sucks, frankly. If I tried being reasonable and kept the whole "school uniform" reasoning that was loose enough as is, I would make it so you could wear certain things over the uniform. Like, coats or scarves or other accessories. Like, they already do it in-game with many of the unique npcs, a lot of the uniforms are designed to fit multiple npc bodies, I don't think it'd be that hard.
    - I hate that some legendaries you can get from Snackworth are locked behind multiplayer; like if you didn't have online multiplayer, you just can't get three specific Pokemon.
    - The BB points are too arbitrary. Like, it takes forever to earn them and you burn through them rather quickly. Especially if you want to unlock the new Paradox Pokemon, you'd need 12-thousand points to unlock the 72 starter Pokemon and evolutions that make up a decent chunk of the Pokedex. What if you don't do online stuff? You can't trade or do online raids to help fill out the trade-evos and version exclusives. Everything at the BB School store also exclusively uses BB points.

oh my god you're so right about them p4 epilogue-ing the team star kids... at least none of them pulled a kanji, though I suppose you could argue that with mela or Giacomo...
agreed with the rest of what you said - I get why they have hisuian pokemon, but it feels so random with the ones they chose? like either give me all of them or give me none of them and leave them for special completion requests, like with Perrin. it feels weird the way they did it.

      @Mojo1356 Před 3 měsíci +2

Not gonna disagree with the story feeling disjointed. I think the Terapagos needed to not include Kieran. He was his own thing that was great as is.
For the Hisui Pokemon, you can also catch Kleavor, but that is still strange regardless.
For the new Paradox Pokemon, uh, no. Those are paradox forms of legendary Pokemon.
Customization- not really the biggest deal to me, but I’ll agree that we needed more clothing options.
BBQs- they want you to do it in multiplayer. You earn BBPs at a monumentally faster rate in unions when everyone is doing them. Single player mode? Boring.

You think double battles are fun? Imagine if there were four Pokémon every fight, imagine if you regularly fought a handful of Pokémon not as a special event but a part of gameplay.
Imagine buttery smooth gameplay and moving quickly through expansive worlds.
Imagine a story with voice actors and cutscenes that never overstays its welcome.
Imagine a whole new cast of wildly diverse monsters to catch and build a party with, a game that's challenging and pushes you to use its mechanics.
Imagine the sweet, sweet upgrades and collectible and quests with their own stories.

I have played Gen 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 (yeah i missed 7 as i got bored of the 3DS for a bit but i plan to get back to it). Pokemon Violet was probably the most fun i had since playing gen 4 and 5. I liked it so much i completed the base game pokedex (still working on the DLC). It was nice that they got rid of the route system and went full in on what gen 8 had teased at and what Pokemon Legends showed. The story was also great. Yes it doesnt run great but being someone who says their favorite game of all time is an N64 game that they prefer to still play said game about i really dont care too much about the performance. The DLC was great sure it started off slow with part 1 but it did a slow crescendo leading into part 2. The epilogue sure the Pokémon back story wasnt there (i recommend you just watch the video on the pokemon youtube channel for that) but i was laughing my head off the whole hour i went through it. Sure it isnt everyones cup of tea but i really enjoyed it.

I wish this was the first DLC and the other one was the second (Heck I wish this was in the base game to a degree) let me battle both the gym leaders and elite four in branch tournaments and don't show me parts of the region but not let me explore parts of it, still a decent DLC I wish we got more- I wish Arven got to interact with his father and more interacting with your old friends in Kitakami

Another way to interpret what you were saying about the master ball is that pokémon is good at making you and only you the hero of your own story.
However, the master ball allows someone else to feel like the hero of their own story because that suggests he had his own trials, accomplishments, and a hero's journey.
I think that's why I kind of fell out of pokémon: It's very rare that a character feels fully realized: I never look at a gym leader and think to myself "wow, they really have gone through a lot in order to get to where they are". Even a character as fully realized as Giovanni felt like he lacked an actual motivation towards his villainy. Maybe that's why a lot of people gravitate towards Cynthia: It was clear she was on a similar journey as the player, but also carved out interests for herself outside of being the best.

great review, arlo! but can we talk for a second about how S/V base game was the first one where they like actually hired a good writer and had a coherent story that left us with a bunch of loose threads and cliffhangers, like the pokedex entries insinuating that the paradox pokemon aren't real, the stuff with heath, the stuff with nemona's parents, and they hyped us up for like a year, only for DLC1 to just totally ignore the base game and tell a completely different story, and then DLC2 finishes the story of DLC1, and then hastily at the end they're like "oh crap, we promised you the, uhh, uhh, uhh, okay so let's go back to area zero, annnnd,,,, here's a cave,,,, and here's a turtle"
it's almost like they just forgot to hire back the same writer to finish the story they started in the base game, i spent like a year wondering about a dozen different questions that i will just never have any answers for.
the most upsetting part of it for me, is that there is basically zero new information about area zero that couldn't have just been inferred from the february 2023 DLC announcement trailer:
    • there's a paradox suicune, okay, so there's going to be an entei and raikou.
    • there's this guy terapagos, okay so he's probably under area zero making all the crystals and stuff.
that's it, that's 100% of the new information given to us by the DLC which pertains to the questions that were raised during the base game, and it was all inferable from the february 2023 announcement trailer. there's no more plot in area zero, unless you consider stellar tera type to be a new plot point? which I don't really, that's not something the base game made me curious about, that's not something I've been wondering about.
the paradox pokemon aren't fake, the time machine is real, there is actually a stupid robot getting his ass blasted by prehistoric pokemon in the distant past, all of the travelers who heard the crystals singing to them, drawing them in to their demise in area zero, yeah idk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ must've been the turtle or something!

This feels like the most completed pokemon game sense black and white, except i didn't have to pay a extra $30 or whatever it was for the dlc. Honestly the story is really good, it actually feels like a actual story, only thing that would make it better is voice acting which it definitely needs, i feel like that would of made the game especially the mochi mayhem part way more enjoyable. There is also a pretty decent post game which we haven't seen in a while, i still dont think if holds up as well compared to some of the other games especially from the pixel art days. But like man it just really sucks pokemom just can't make a game that runs or looks good and i think its gotten even worse especially when flying, and its not like the switch can't run some really amazing games like SMTV or BOTW or TOTK. Its just inexcusable how bad the game runs and really makes me question if i want to keep playing it and trying to shiny hunt pokemom x,y,z. Also just the little things like no shiny sound, being forced to use a link code to do a union group, and trying to join raids, really is discouraging me to keep playing this game. At the end of the day the games still decently fun, the stories decent, but the game just doesn't run well and it makes it so tough to tell people to pick it up or to keep playing it. I just hope whatever pokemon does with gen 5 is actually good, i dont want to see a bdsp remake or anything close to how bad that was.
