2023 Fashion Trends To AVOID In Your 50s | What NOT To Wear
I've never been one to follow rules and that goes for rules around fashion trends too. I like to think there should be no limits when it comes to fashion BUT I also believe there are some trends that do become a little tricky to wear as you get a little older. Of course I'm not expecting everyone to agree with me but I thought I'd focus on a few 2023 fashion trends and share my thoughts on making them work when you're in your fifties and older. I'd absolutely love to hear your thoughts in the comments below. Also I was trialing a different microphone in today's episode and wasn't very happy with it to be honest so I'll go back to regular transmission next video but please excuse the sound quality in this one.
Anyway, thank you SO much for watching and I can't wait to see you in the next one.

Wow, I am 70 and think that older ladies should wear what flatters them regardless of age. I think that is the way to think about it. For instance, I know a 70 plus lady that wears high heels all the time and she wears many trends. She can do this because she has kept herself slender despite having two kids. I also wish more fashion vloggers would talk more about us black women. We age so differently and can get away with more cause we look younger (as long as we watch our weight). Me, I could easily pass for a fifty something woman and lost weight in the last few years so I truly look much younger than I did just a few years ago. I am enjoying some of the trends and I am way older than fifty.

So true! My exact thoughts. People dont want to address this issue but there are significant differences between Black women in any decade and other women of other ethnicities. As long as Black women take care of their weight and skin they normally look at least a decade younger and can wear many of these style effortlessly

Miss you said it perfectly as black women we approach style differently so I did all these when I was younger when it was considered tacky. So I look forward to playing with them in a new way anyway. this is the first time I am seeing black women able to age publicly with eyes on us and they are doing it well...But this lady did a pretty good job and I was pleasantly surprised.

I’m in my 60s and agree with everything, except heels. While I can no longer wear them because of foot and ankle problems -ironically both caused by wearing stilettos when younger- I would still wear them if I could 😆. And you made an excellent point regarding the sheer trend: it is totally appropriate when worn to *add coverage* rather than to reveal what you otherwise would not. On occasions where I might once have chosen a strapless or spaghetti-strap dress or top, I now opt for something sheer over a cami, or a top/dress with sheer sleeves. A *suggestion* of bare skin is more flattering at my age than the skimpy garments I sometimes wore in my 20s. But completely sheer dresses clearly showing underwear beneath? A hard NO at any age!

Now that I’m older, I realize why my mother’s generation was so insulted by this mindset. Fashion and what’s considered stylish is so subjective and is forced down our throats by a handful of designers, buyers, stylists & fashion editors. IMO fashion should be more about fit for the average woman and the style is the woman’s own. If something fits you well and you love it, I love it. Do you! BTW I love your videos. I just vehemently disagree with your opinion on this one.

  • @jesss2145
    @jesss2145 Před rokem +36

I'm 41 and think all of these are wearable at any age if paired with the right items. Same goes for the replacements, they need to be styled with things to make them look up to date (if looking stylish is your goal). Anything that has come back around (including Platform shoes, pleated tailored pants...) runs the risk of looking outdated. Hair style makes a huuuge difference too. I think shoes and hair style (not color!) are a couple of the most important things for looking current, but it is the look as whole that matters, not single items.

Paper bag waists I would actually take issue with Leonie. Regardless of age, I think they are super unflattering for hourglass figures. They really enlarge our already slightly wider hips. To me, they only look fabulous on boyish figures (for whom they serve to give an illusion of hourglass shape) or tall ladies like yourself
I’m just at the top end of petite at 5’4”” and they look awful on me.

I was ready to disagree with limitations put on over 50’s…..but I agree with most of what you said. I have seen older ladies try to stay toooooooo current and ended up looking cartoonish. I try to stay on trend in a quieter way. I like wide leg and cargo pants, but they have to fit my proportions. Wide but fitted. Not a fan of lace. Tried eyelet and still looked like I was trying too hard. Made a couple of crocheted tops and again ensured they fit my proportions and then I looked fine. I found that looking in a mirror wasn’t always enough to see what works and what doesn’t. Take a picture of your reflection in the mirror for a better take on how you look. Stripes, absolutely always good, but classic Breton is best. And at 63 I have finally learned to keep pieces that fit, even if not on point at the moment…..the style will be back and you will wish you hadn’t given a particular garment that you loved away.

I actually just bought a crochet net sparkly gold sweater that is very mermaid core, and it looks great on me. I also love stripes in all sizes and vibrant colors, and this also suits me also. I get many compliments on my attire, often being stopped on the street by complete strangers. Sheer dressing where you can see underwear, is not flattering on anyone no matter what age you are other than perhaps celebrities, and potentially dangerous if you are out in public wearing it, some very aggressive men out there who still do not know how to behave decently in 2023. I'm 56 also, and if you can rock any fashion, go for it. Fashion should not have any age limit - look at Iris Apfel, who is amazing and inspiring at 100.

I only wear them with things that can cover the elastic, like a blouse that barely falls below a high-waist on the pants, or a blouse that ties in front at the bottom and is not tied too high or too tight. I am 100% with you about the high heels. You suggested great options to wearing stiletto heels! Thanks so much for this one!

I’m 63 and have never been able to wear high heels (3 inches and up), so I’m not about to start now. I love 2 to 2.5-inch block or wedge heels, instead. The extra height gives me more confidence, but I can still walk comfortably in these. If I’ll be on my feet all day, like when traveling, it’s always sneakers for me. I haven’t been able to bring myself to wear sneakers with my skirts and dresses yet, but I do want to start this summer. My self-critical eye just needs to get accustomed to the look on me, it looks fine on others, but we’re always our own harshest critics. Maybe with my Superga white flatform pair, they’re the cleanest and freshest pair I have and give a little extra height. I couldn’t do the vintage running-shoe type, they’re too clunky, I’ll save those for trouser outfits.

Your mission this Summer is to crack the sneaker / skirt look! It's definitely one of those looks that feels strange at first and like you said seems to work on everyone else but once you get accustomed to it you'll be wondering what you wore beforehand. Maybe start with a longer, floaty skirt and ease into the look x

Every style comes back around with a modern flare...and most are for trendy, younger, less sophisticated women/girls. I remember wearing certain things 20 yrs ago & would never do so now. I've luckily never really fallen for ultra trendy items, no matter my age. I rocked a few styles back in the day and even then remember feeling uncomfortable simply bec it wasn't my style. I think knowing your style, having confidence and limits is key to being fresh & sophisticated.

I get what you're saying about Lace. When I was in my 20s I went in hard for vintage inspired "Victorian" blouses & Edwardian jackets as well as 1950s shirt dresses worn with ankle boots, Ren Faire tops & dresses, etc. At 22 it was obvious what I was doing (I mixed it with jeans & leather jackets so it wasn't too costume-y) but now at 63, going Victorian/Edwardian can look matronly (unless it's done deliberately as Steam Punk which is an aesthetic I actually like)

I like what you’re saying here. I like some lace accents such as a trim in knit sweaters or a touch at the sleeves of a blouse, but head to toe lace might not flatter so much.

I try to go for pieces that are classic but still have the modern edge. And I totally agree with the heals. I had a wedding recently and just the thought of wearing high heals made me cringe. I ended up buying a higher block heeled shoe and I feel as if it suited me better. Thanks for the tips!

Ha ha stripes never been my thing. I like classic stripes , nothing too bold. Now crochet i dont know. I am not so much into it, but the dresses that i was looking for, it would be fine. I really wanted Chloe off white crochet dress, but i wasnt able to find my size so far.But with any crochet, i would need a slip underneath, because sheer, or sometimes even if its lined, no matter what age i was, once i met my hubby, and i was 30, looked 20, but he was like its inappropriate in my circles 😳🤪 and we argue all the time, when i wear cropped, or more form fitting🤪 Have a blessed day🙏💗

Hi Leonie! I really appreciated all of the points that you made regarding all of the different trends for this year. Some are definitely more wearable than others! It's all a matter of finding out what works best for your body and your own style.
I think I'm going to make you an honorary Canadian (I'm from Ontario so I'm allowed to do that, lol!) because you apologized for your own opinion and least every other trend that you mentioned! You shouldn't have too; however, I understand why you would.

sorry for commenting as we go along. As regards distressed denim I swore I’d never pay money for ‘damaged’ garments and then ended up looking in a second hand store for a pair of jeans I could cut the legs to the length I wanted for shorts since they were not trending at the time. Found this gorgeous pair with mild distressing and one rip on one knee that was from a higher end brand. Pricey for this type of shop, but the fit was amazing and sooo flattering! I decided to wear them as is and look elsewhere for another pair to ‘chop’
Now if I’d cut them, I would not have worn them to work, whereas these distressed ones I have been wearing a lot (except for winter).
But I wouldn’t wear anything with rips all the way down.

I actually owned a sheer lacy top that I’ve worn for years with a black tank top underneath before this was a trend. Would never wear sheer showing my underwear.
Everything else totally agree with. Crochet is a hard one. Our weather here is extreme and I realise that I wouldn’t reach for a crochet top (had one). Too hot for summer and too cold for winter. I don’t regulate my temperature well to cope.

Have you ever really looked at the way tie waist pants make someone even without a tummy, look around the middle? The last thing I want is added bulk across the tummy area. Love high waisted pants with a wide leg...even smooth elastic if done well. But I always remove that big bow tie at the center of my waist when I get these pants.

I agree with most of everything you said except: Jeans. I think you should wear what you think looks good on you. Short waisted people don't like high rise. Too low of a rise looks bad on anybody. But, love love low rise boyfriend jeans and cargos. I like some embroidery on jeans sometimes also. Like Driftwood jeans. I'm 58 and also wear bright strips sometimes. I don't show my midriff. I think that isn't age appropriate for me. I agree on crochet dresses, and I Love knit body con dresses. I just purchased two. Basically, I think you should wear what makes you feel beautiful!

Elasticated waists are no joy to wear especially in summer (although the suggestion with having elastic only in the back👌🏻), almost the same with tight belts and the tie waist band, paper bag style is not flattering for most women, so just fitted pants or pants with a lose scarf as a belt😊, great tips as usual👏
And most of the things you described we old folks😂 should not wear I find ugly for the young ones too (crochet, low rise, sheer...)

I don’t disagree with you regarding any of them really. I would look ridiculous in all of them, I’m sure, and would have done 30 years ago too!
I went over in a pair of wedges that felt fine to walk in, and almost staggered into a shop window trying to stop myself so if I do wear heels it’s very rare. I’ve had too many accidents in them which have been a bit embarrassing and I can’t walk downstairs in them anymore. Or downhill. I have to take them off and put them back on when I’ve got to the bottom. 😁

After reading most of these comment, I'm feeling practically alone in being over 50 and wearing much of what has been labeled unfortunate for my age. Whereas there are girlish trends I no longer find interesting, there are also designs within those trends that would work for me and fit seamlessly within my wardrobe. So, for example, I bought my oversized, Disclaimer, pink/orange ombre jeans jacket before Barbie came out only to discover that it's the pink from the movie. (I was packing to move across the country and wasn't paying attention to the advertisements.) It's also a perfect colour against my skin - it lights up my complexion year round. Women (and men) of all ages love it. (I want a wide, bright, multi-striped something!)
Of course, I follow my own personal style rules. I've never liked feeling that I look like a clown. It doesn't matter if anyone else agrees. What matters is that I feel I have the contrast and balance that work for my complexion, on my body, for my personality, and in my life. I wear the jacket mostly with monochrome black or white, or with denim. And since I now live in an area that doesn't have any real winter, I might wear it with grey once in a while. (I can see it with my vintage Kenzo jodhpurs and either sneakers or jodhpur boots.
Certainly, style ought to develop as time passes and there are some general style rules one can tweak and make one's own, but what works for me may not work for many other women. Look at Grace Grece Ghanem, Iris Apfel, Iman, Cicely Tyson, Jennifer Lopez, Salma Hayek, Mariah Carey, Gina Torres, Angela Bassett, Alfre Woodard, and so many others we may know personally, may pass as we shop or walk down the street, or elsewhere. There are so many 50+ women who have their own impeccable taste and wear many of the trends "to avoid" in this video.
I think we should wear what we love with the only caveats being that we should continually educate our tastes and be honest about what we see in the mirror. (If we put it on and find ourselves frowning, no matter how "in" it is or how we used to love it, it's not for us today.) It might not be possible in a video such as this but style advice ought to encourage us to discover and express ourselves through our clothing and the ways we put our clothes together. That will vary depending on the many factors that make us who we are.

Oh my gosh, yes. A male friend spoke about elasticated waists in a positive light recently, because I said I'd put on a few pounds, but I looked at him absolutely horrified (not actually a good look in itself, but hey). No way. For me, it's all downhill from there! I just couldn't. I would say well fitting clothes are the best friend of us older ladies, not squeezing into anything a tad small or burying ourselves in the baggy outfit. Wearing the size we are, not we wish we were...
