Neutrinos, Matter, and Antimatter: The Yin Yang of the Big Bang

  • What happened to all of the universe's antimatter? Can a particle be its own anti-particle? And how do you build an experiment to find out? In this program, particle physicists reveal their hunt for a neutrino event so rare, it happens to a single atom at most once every 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years: far longer than the current age of the universe. If they find it, it could explain no less than the existence of our matter-filled universe.
PARTICIPANTS: Janet Conrad, Andrea Pocar, Lindley Winslow
    MODERATOR: Natalie Wolchover

They should have also included one theoretical physicist in the panel. As Janet said, particle physics is progressing due to cyclic nature of experimental and theoretical discoveries. These experimental physicists did not know much about what theoretical physicists are up to.

Stephen Hawking said in his "A brief history of time", 2005 edition, p.111-112, and also in "Nature of Space and Time" 20l0 edition, p.53-59, that an electron moving on a closed loop in an electric field is equivalent to two oppositely charged particles accelerating away from each other in Minkowski space. If you take this literally, not just as an analogy, then there is a natural answer to the question why no anti-matter have ever been found except during particle collision in a cyclotron, and why a particle and its anti-particle so generated are so short-lived.

The Dirac equation developed by Paul Dirac actually predicted antimatter a year earlier in 1928 since it came out before the discovery of the positron in 1929. Sad to see that detail missed and one directly related to the solutions being thrown away because "they aren't physical" yet they actually were physical other than that I think it was fairly good.

Do we ever get an answer regarding where Fermi mysteriously disappeared to during Winslow’s Enrico Fermi bio that was going to be answered before the rank amateur host interrupted him for no good reason. I’m 25 min in now and nothin so far.

This is unreal. The video starts with the claim that anti matter was a surprise, not expected at all. On the contrary, it was predicted by Dirac from his famous equation for a relativistic electron - one of the greatest results of the 20th century physics - it required the existence of the anti electron, or positron as we call it. This is the first thing that a student learns in a relativistic quantum mechanics course. Although every experimentalist show know it - I have never met before anyone who did not - it shows that you also need a theorist on such a panel. I for one never fail to speak about the great work of Dirac even in my public talks, since his prediction of anti matter is arguably a beginning of modern elementary particle physics and a glorious example of a surprise that a theory may carry, an analog of say black holes that Einstein theory of gravity predicted.

Weren't Majorana particles discovered in 2018!? Meaning that it is no longer a fact that everything has an antiparticle partner. Shou-Cheng Zhang and a team of scientists working in conjunction with him actually found the Majorana particles (he referred to them as the "Angel particles" because of the lacking antiparticle).

    • @spacefreedomfighter1897

I think it’s because when it interacts with matter, it would produce an electron or a positron depending on wether it’s a neutrino or anti-neutrino.
Thus it’s not the neutrino per se that is detected, but the product of the interaction, which are electrically charged and so detectable with a magnet.
At least that is what I understood of the presentation.

    The Search For TRUTH
Often we have heard from those who seek to know TRUTH in scientific ways by verifying theory based on rather short-sighted information.
“Where pride is, there also shall be reproach:
but where humility is, there also is wisdom.”
    [Proverbs 11:2]
“And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled:
and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.”
    [Matthew 23:12]
The search for TRUTH cannot be ultimately determined by limited information confirming limited theories. As a specie, we humans will never know all there is to know about TRUTH. For as one door opens, we find illumination shining under a multitude of closed doorways each one ready to be opened into the beautiful light of new discoveries and new doorways- a very exciting, never ending process!
Our Creator began our universe, and possibly an uncountable number of other unique universes, within the Infinite Eternal Conscious Bliss of its own BEING. Thus, every form of energy is known by and communicates its unique being with its Creator. All that manifests lives within the infinite awareness of its Creator. All forms of life “swim within” and are totally dependent upon the will and consciousness of the Creator. Our Creator has endowed innumerable life forms with free will to make responsible decisions for which they are held accountable. Each created set of species live within a unique universe governed by unique interwinding laws at various levels of awareness, and each specie will have the opportunity to eventually pass through “the narrow gate” into a very special “mansion” in paradise.
“In my Father’s house there are many mansions.
If not, I would have told you: because I go to prepare a place for you.”
    [John 14:2]
The being who says that it is not necessary to have faith in our Creator searches with its head in the quicksand to discover a very limited spectrum of “sandy truth”- missing the limitless vistas of possible discoveries in the world above his/her created quicksand-filled hole.
And so let us bow before our Creator giving Praise, Adoration and Thanks for the unmerited gift of grace- of living awareness that IAM bestows equally upon each one of us. We have but to love our Creator and our neighbours as we are loved unconditionally-treating all with patience, gentleness and kindness!
“Be you therefore perfect, as also your heavenly Father is perfect.”
    [Matthew 5:48]
That is our challenge and our destiny- the choice is yours.4

Doug Norkum - this is not a bible study. No place for that blind dogma here. I'm sorry you don't know what science is.

Amazing how limited as observers we are and humble we are not. More specifically, observers limited by the interactions of photons and matter alike who are comically attempting to explain a universe wherein 99% of it is beyond their ability to observe it. Observers who they themselves can't even explain their own origin and existence! If one were to make an attempt to understand how we may appear to the next greater observers above us but still very far beyond our best imaginations we are collectively a 1 legged duck surrounded by a sphere of an infinite Sea!

Very interesting and thanks for the response seems these days intellectual conversation on social media can be very illusive! I would like to point out that for you to have such an awareness and understanding of anything it had to at some point be observed during it's cycle and within it's local environment. Regardless if that either are classified within CM or QM because at the fundamental level all that exists is information. Furthermore, and unfortunately for us its very possible that even mathematics is merely an emergence from another layer of information that's completely unknown, not observable and unimaginable to us. Biological observers and their technological counterparts have limited understanding of their reality. A constraint thats unknown and directly related to how they observe and decode the available information within their reality. More specifically, a reality wherein the observers understanding is merely an illusion masking it's true nature. Which I have labeled The Observers Paradox!

What if there are very many independent observers who happen to be creative and imaginative and who cross check and review each others work. That's one way to move the boundary of our limitations .
