  • Trying to Decide between the Toyo Open Country RT and Nitto Ridge Grappler? I've been running these two for several years now on two different trucks, and wanted to share my personal thoughts about these tires. I cover noise, wear, traction, and overall value in this video to help make your decision a little easier. After logging thousands of miles on these tires the Nitto Ridge Grappler has become my tire of choice with low noise, and great wear. Both of these tires are solid options for your diesel truck.

Nitto Exo Grappler AWT work amazing on my Ram 2500 MegaCab. Work great off road and have had a long tread life already.. about half tread at 35k miles. Also pretty quiet on the highway. They also retain towing abilities being an E rated tire.

Good info! You covered all the key points. Ran the Toyo MT 33x12.5x20 on a tundra got 70k miles towing a travel trailer and light off road. I ran the RT's. Both were excellent. Once they wear - you will lose traction so take it easy on starts if in inclement weather. Now I have an F250 and have worn out the Michelin AT's2 and looking for a replacement. Thanks for the info this helps me make a decision.

I like the Ridge Grapplers, but had to ensure they stayed at 65 PSI on the fronts for my Dodge 2500. Any lower pressure and they would wear funny on each tread shoulder block. The alignment was spot on.

I have had two sets of 35 inch nitto ridge grapplers. I average about 70,000 miles per set. Very quite and nice ridding. It tows very well also. Both sets, the rear tires felt loose for first 2000 miles until they break in. I contacted nitto on recommended tire pressure for 2011 Duramax hd2500 and they recommended I run 57 psi in front and 67 psi in rear on my Duramax. I love these tires

A tire that addresses all the shortfalls of the ridge Grappler and yet no one seems to ever talk about is the EXO Grapplers. It's designed for HD trucks and has mountain/snowflake winter rating. I live in bc with lots of rain and some snow and every one I ask with ridge graps says they are sketchy in the wet. For this reason I bought the EXO Grapplers for my 2018 F350 6.7 to retain the aggressive looks of both the Toyo RT and ridge Grapplers but also that piece of Mind knowing they're going to perform well in the wet slushy conditions.

Had same dmax for 7 years. Started with bfgs then went to nitto mud grapplers, but being in north the mud grapplers sucked, ice: make sure your seatbelt was on lol, squishy sidewall when towing, didn’t perform well in snow unless I was in deep snow, then they really shined. Only ran them for 15k when I switched to ridge grapplers and had them for 30k ish now. Very happy with ridge grapplers. Quiet on Highway, good In snow, not quite the performance in snow like a duratrac, but they’re way quieter and don’t wear out as fast. I’d recommend ridge graps, they are very comfty towing and in ice/snow. Truck doesn’t see much mud so can’t give reviews on that.

I have a 05 ram 2500. I live in Oregon and work out of West Texas oilfields. I run a toyo open country a/t. They are 35/12.50/17 on a 3 inch lift/level. I’ve ran them in snow ice mud and sand . And if you have never experienced oilfield mud or wet “ caliche” worst mud I’ve ever been in!!! And I swear buy these. They work great in all above. They have good siping so in wet and icy conditions there great. The main reason why the 2 in this video lack in the wet / icy conditions is there is vary little siping so it’s like running a slick.
So my advice is take it to a tire shop and ask about having more siping added or buy the open country a/t .. also I use my truck to pull a 10,000 pound travel trailer from job site to job site.

Toyos we’re good tires, lasted about 15k miles less than the Nittos.
Nittos were better on the icy roads in north east Oregon.
    RTs were quieter.
    Nittos were cheaper.

I ran the Nitto Trail Grapplers 35x12.5 R20s for over a year and absolutly britalized them on all kinds of terrain and especially rock crawliing and mud and I loved them, but they were sketchy AF on icy or wet roads and were relatively loud. I was going to switch to Hankook dynapro mt2's but the tire sales person made me an insane deal on five Nitto Ridge Grapplers and I couldn't say,"No".
I have been very happy with them. First thing I did is take them rock crawling in teh rainy season so ther was also PLENTY of mud and they perfromed VERY well. The noise was vastly less than my Old MTs and the road performance was also MUCH better. I do think that the MT's had slightly better grip in mud and steep rock inclines, but these got me over all the obsdtacles I went over and I had no issues. I will stick with them and see how they wear which seemed a bit of an issue with the MT's. The Nitto trail garpplers still had PLENTY of tread and worked great, but the base of the rubber (empty areas between lugs) did develop some weird "dry rot" veining and cracks which was a little disconcerting. Those lasted me about 46k-50k miles before swapping them out, but they couldv'e easly gone another 20k. We'll see how these Ridge grapplers work out.

I need to replace now as one seperated on me which made me start looking at other brands, which i have narrowed it down to Nitto Or The Toyo A/T III. Which would you go with? I really do not drive the truck much and when we do its for long trips, we used to have a 5th wheel , which im sure we will get again in the future . Really no off road besides regular camp sites etc. I would like to move up a size like 295/70/18 would that work with either tire brand? Torsion bars raised 2". Thanks for your opinion.

Just put ridge grapplers on my 2020 ram laramie 1500. They are 33's for now till I do a lift kit. They are very quiet compared to my 04 ram with cooper stt pro 35's. Changing lanes on the highway it feels like the sidewalls sway on the nittos. Any one else feel the same as the m/t 's on my other truck I don't feel that at all

That's the one part he didn't mention and where there is no comparison. Get into clay or buckshot and the RT with those huge voids cleans nearly like an MT. They do suck on wet pavement. Hell i'd argue they're dangerous on wet pavement. I'm on my second set of RTs and in that regard i hate them. Everywhere else they're wonderful though. I imagine the redesign will have more siping.

The R/T held up A LOT better for me in rockier, desert terrain. They aren’t snow rated, but mine did fine in snow. They also have a mud terrain carcass. The Ridge Grappler has an all-terrain carcass. The softer compound doesn’t hold up as well with big, sharp rocks. That’s my experience with both.

For tire reviews, reviewers need to provide tread depth, and load rating. When people complain about poor traction in deep fresh snow (12 inches) or blowing a load C rated tires while pulling a trailer loaded with a SkidSteer at 70 mph on I-70 through the Rocky Mtns in January, we the readers need to know if the reviewer purchased the correct tire for their task. For my empty 6000 lb 4WD SUV I prefer quiet(NOT, I didn't rotate) Duratracs with low weight 45-50lbs (easy-on-suspension), 16 to 18/ 32nds tread depth for any kind of deep snow or slush. The new Destination XTs and Grabber XTs (terrible name) look good (quiet, great tread depth 16/32nds and snow traction, light weight for load rating).

Looks like the public has made the decision to choose the Nitto Ridge Grappler, as I am the proud purchaser of the LAST 4 of those tires available in the United States (as of April 2021). I had Nitto Terra Grappler G2s on my truck, which I just replaced with the Ridges. I have noticed NO loud noise on the road and the griping on paved turns is phenomenal. I bought the 315/70r17 size tires on custom rims with a 6" negative aspect. My ATs lasted me for over 50,000 miles and 5 years of freeway, dirt, and regular street driving, and I expect at least that from the Ridge Grapplers.

I was always told when putting that pressure into your tire whenever I max PSI is always run 5 lb under so the max is 40 I run 35 to 37 lb and also keep looking at my tires to see how the tread is wearing if it's wearing more in the middle or or the edges are getting worn down then I will adjust the air pressure so the tire is not copying or crowning when you're running on the highway that's also a good way to tell if they're running the correct air pressure

In heavy gulf coast rains RTs grip well. I've tried to hydroplane them during downpours and pooled water unsuccessfully. I do however like the slightly more squared look of RGs. But I can't tolerate another tire that gets squirrelly in the rain. So it was RTs or Wildpeaks for me.

I have witnessed the same thing first hand. I have 33" Wildpeaks and have been wanting to go with Ridgegrappler's since they look badass. However, two buddies with 37" grappler's couldn't hang with my small 33" wildpeaks in the snow. We were all aired down around 10-15 PSI. At first I thought it was a driver issue but both trucks with grappler's kept getting stuck so I figure it was a tire issue.

Good day! So, I’m in the market for new tires on my 2017 RAM 2500. I live in a small northern town in Ontario Canada where our colder weather usually begins in October-April/May..ish. We get a lot of snow, and icy roads. Hot temps in the summer. I can’t afford to buy winter and A/T tires, so I need a jack of all trades. Currently running a LT305/55R20. (Watched your vidéo on suspension/tire-wheel setup). Can’t afford smaller wheels right now either. My current tire is a Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac which has worn quite quickly. I’m looking at the BF Goodrich A/T KO2 and the General Grabber AT X . Open for suggestions if you can help me out.
