The Faculty Was SUPPOSED To Be The Next Scream

  • When the Faculty was produced, it was hot off the tails of teen slashers like Scream. All things considered The Faculty should have ben another box office smash for Dimension Films. But what happened? Why did a movie made with such star power in front and behind the camera fail? How did a movie with all the ingredients of Scream flop so hard?

This movie is so underrated, in my opinion, "Breakfast Club" meets "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." I love how Mary Beth is the only main character who doesn't have a Breakfast Club counterpart. Foreshadowing at its finest...

I've wanted to see this movie and I'm not even into the horror genre. Not because I don't want to be scared, but I want to see some originality in them. Marketing is EVERYTHING and that APPLIES to everything. For instance, NBC barely advertised Manifest, a show I actually like, explaining why the ratings were average to low and they cancelled them because of it. But when it was added on Netflix, it was #1 on the most watched list for probably two and a half months, leading to them ordering another season of the show!
Or how big another show I like You was when they added that show as part of their content and ordered another season after Lifetime cancelled it. But even before the renewal, so many people suddenly talked about it as if it's brand new and originated from Netflix even though it started on Lifetime.

I really like the Faculty. One of those movies I've watched multiple times, but not for a few years now. I actually think the concept is perfect for a streaming show remake. It's the kind of plot that would benefit from the extended run time of a show. Netflix would do a good job with it I think, if it was more like Stranger Things in tone than their Scream remake. If they set it in the 90s that would be amazing, so that the ability for research and communication would be hampered by the lower access to technology... I remember watching the Faculty for the first time and thinking it should be more famous. Glad it's considered a cult classic now.

I didn't even know that, I thought it had scream vibes, especially near the end with the 'who's the queen" plotthread and the chase scenes. It totally made sense why.

The Faculty is the film version of "this didn't give what it was s'pose to gave" for the studio but for me ...it gave!!!

I remember renting it when it first came out and I didn't like it, a few weeks ago I decided to watch it again and liking it. Now I realized why I didn't like it the first time and it was because I was expecting a Slasher style movie, that was my favorite genre of movies. Since that time I've been watching more Sci-fi movies and I think that's why I feel differently about the movie now.

The Faculty is an example of trying to make something popular for the sake of it being popular. If you focus solely on making something successful, you won’t have the creative touch it takes for it to be good

The thing is sometimes box office failure and even critical failure at the time of release, are a godsend for films like this. The Faculty is great still today, because it is the only one. There was no franchise. And that is actually a good thing.

I remember some friends forcing me to go see this when we were in high school. At the time, we all hated it. I wasn’t a horror fan, and I didn’t understand what it was trying to do. You’re 100% right about the marketing of it. I don’t know what we expected, but none of us expected what it was, and everybody just felt confused by it (though it isn’t a confusing movie). However, I feel like I should revisit it now. I have a feeling that I would actually like it 22 years later because I have more context for it.

When "The Faculty" came out, we weren't going to see it. My sister went and saw it and said "you've got to see this". I went and it ended up being one of my favorite films to come out of the 90s. I LOVE this movie and yes, the marketing was bad. I didn't want to see it because it came off like a "Scream" and that's my favorite slasher film. I didn't want to see another rip off. This movie was one of the most unique teen horror films of it's time (maybe even ever) and it's a shame it didn't get it's roses.

The thing about marketing reminded me of The Village, a SPECTACULAR drama that was murdered by its marketing. I saw it in cinemas and my friends hated it bc they were expecting a gore fest and not a nuanced tale of love and family with some maybe monsters

Yeah from 1996 to 2003 there was a flood of Teen Horror movies after Scream’s success. And most of the actors who were staring in these movies were big and young upcoming stars from Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, Mathew Lillard, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Sarah Chalke, Rebecca Gayheart, Alicia Witt, Tara Reid, David Arquette, Joshua Jackson, Seann William Scott, Anthony Anderson, Jennifer Morrison, Nick Stahl, Jessica Cauffiel, Marley Shelton, Katherine Heigl, David Boreanaz, Josh Hartnett, Ryan Phillippe, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr, Kerr Smith, Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, AJ Cook, Alexandra Holden, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Mena Suvari, Rose McGowan, Jamie Kennedy, Drew Barrymore, Britney Murphy, Michael Weston, Katherine Isabelle, Chad Donella, Derek Hamilton, etc etc.

Another component to take into consideration is that the sci-fi horror subgenre was not particularly successful at the box office during the mid to late 90s. I can see a hesitation by the studio to show its hand as an alien film. But yes, The Faculty is a bizarre film but I’ve always thought that’s what made it special. I loved this film when it came out and still. I saw it in theaters!

I enjoy this movie immensely, love seeing a young Elijah Wood be pretty much the male equivalent of Sidney Prescott, and the practical creature effects towards the end look pretty neat.
But I totally get the sci-fi Scream vibes.
