10 Best Places to Live in the United Kingdom

- What are the best places to live in the United Kingdom? The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a country that any decent person loves to live. Also known as Britain, Great Britain, or the UK the country is structured in such a way that you can enjoy a meaningful life in any of its cities. Even then, the UK cities outclass themselves in terms of cost and standard of living and happiness. On these bases, we present the 10 best places to live in the United Kingdom.
10 Plymouth
A city you should consider for a living in the United Kingdom is Plymouth. This is a waterfront city on the south coast of Devon, England. It is located approximately 60 kilometres south-west of Exeter and 310 kilometres west-south-west of London.
The average salary of £27,502 in Plymouth is not bad. However, be prepared to spend some £1,762 of that on commuting and £10,512 on rent. And it costs an average of £223,965 to acquire your own property. Thus, the 261,400 residents of Plymouth may report a lower level of satisfaction with their day-to-day living. Nevertheless, they are happier to be living in a crime-free city. For the safety of lives and property that living in Plymouth guarantee, we consider it one of the 10 best places to live in the United Kingdom.
9. Salisbury
This is Salisbury, it is a cathedral city with a population of 40,302. Salisbury is located at the confluence of the rivers Avon, Bourne, and Nadder. The city in the southeast of Wiltshire, England is approximately 20 miles from Southampton and 30 miles from Bath. If you’re considering living in the United Kingdom, this city near the edge of Salisbury Plain is worthy of your consideration.
With an average salary of £26,502, all those living in this city should be happy. Of course, £1184 of that amount will go for accommodation. Earning that much and spending that less, residents of Salisbury should be among the happiest.
8. Glasgow
Our search for the best places to live in the UK takes us to Scotland. There we find Glasgow, the largest city and a port on the Clyde in west-central Scotland. This city, which is one of the greatest shipbuilding centers, is home to over 801,000 Glaswegians, many of whom speak the most Gaelic especially outside of the Highlands and Islands. The city should score even higher if population adds to a city’s happiness because it is the third most populated.
The average salary in Glasgow is £29,161 while some £1,929 is expected to be spent commuting. You could buy a home with an average of £126,200 while rent/mortgage will continue to gulp £9,048.
7. Cambridge
Famous for its university, Cambridge is one of the best places to live in the UK, for obvious reasons. Interestingly, the influx of academics into the city hasn’t raised the cost of living disproportionately. If anything, it only increases the happiness level of the resident of the top UK center for culture, traditions, education, and job opportunities.
The average cost of living in this prosperous city is about £2,000 per month. Depending on the side of the city where you live, the average monthly rent is £1,100. Compared with the opportunities that abound in the city, the transportation and utility costs are also reasonable. Cambridge is such a place you can live to find inspiration to advance your career.

The best place to live is Buckingham Palace. You are relatively safe from crime with tall fences and armed guards. You have plenty of spare rooms, a nice big garden and a lake, free rent and free taxi service. No need to go shopping since the shops come to you.
And when things really turn to s**t, you can hop on your private jet and whiz on over to your secluded 'lodge' in British Columbia...part of which you would also own if you're the owner of Buck House (if you get my drift).
I DIED of laughter when Swindon popped up as number 1, and the "If you've ever been in Swindon as a tourist" just finished me. Who tf goes to Swindon as a tourist? 😅
Me thinks I must have visited the other Swindon.....?
They go there to see the roundabout.
lol yeah had to check to see this vid was released on april 1st, and it wasn't!
I thought it was strange when Wolverhampton, Oxford and Aberdeen appeared on the list, but then they went and topped that by putting Swindon at number 1.
Now if was least interesting place to live I could fully endorse Swindon for number 1.
They left places like Canterbury and Kendal off the list for these dumps.
I'd suggest Luton. It's the ideal dumping ground for unwanted visitors of low IQ.
Some shockers in that list!!
If you are considering moving to the UK, ignore almost everything that geezer just said!!
Absolutely!
You clearly didn't get the joke(s)
A note to all you Londoners who have made a fortune selling your basement flat in Balham and are looking for a mansion in rural Devon and a Pied a Terre in a city please can you give Devon a miss and give the local youngsters a chance.
I don’t think they would consider it - it’s a dog eat dog London
You forgot to say “this video is brought to you by Swindon town council” at the start.
@Pablo Sapanga. My memory of Swindon, got hit by a hippie in a petrol station, it’s a shit hole 😂
😂😂😂😂
Chester is a lovely city on the River Dee and within easy reach of Manchester and Liverpool
Liverpool is imho the best city to visit in the UK, but the hotels are very expensive at the weekend.
@@vordman it is expensive in weekends partly because it has 2 PL teams, LFC and Everton, that play home in alternate weekends. It is especially expensive whenever LFC plays home
Yep definitely recommend Chester! It’s a lovely place with good links to Wales, London, and the rest of the north
Nicest place in the UK
My boyfriend live in chester , sure it's the best place to live in the world, I love you edward
I lived in Swindon for four years. The worst place I've ever lived. A headless place culturally and a nightmare of badly planned expansion.
Correct.
But D-Low is from there and that man levels it up to no end.
Including magic roundabout.
I will never take a single word you say as fact after watching this hilarious video.
Living anywhere in UK on average salary is like living in hell . 60% is spent on rent , 20% on energy and insurance bills . So with remaining 20 % manage your life . No one can be happy in UK if they don’t have a mortgage free ownership of a house . Living standards are falling by the day .
...yet people keep voting for the very party that have given us this...
May I suggest you move to a country like Ukraine and I am sure you will appreciate the UK more
@butterfly but we don't. We live in the UK and it SHOULD be better in the fifth richest economy in the world.
I hate it when people compare situations with smaller economies!! I suppose it could have been worse, most Tory voters compare with Africa!!
@@butterfly-bw6cx Exactly. I've lived abroad and frankly many other countries are either on par with the UK or in some ways actually worse.
The UK is a world leader in many things and you realise that the grass isn't always greener.
sounds just like Sydney, honestly
For people who have a passion for roundabouts and desolate town centres yes Swindon is the top choice.
Yes I found placing Swindon over Salisbury rather strange.
I think Milton Keynes, rather than Swindon, would represent the Holy Grail for the Roundabout Society.
@@richardcory5024 But only Swindon has a magic one.
@@richardcory5024 Uv never heard of glenrothes in fife then. It hold the record for most roundabouts per mile in the uk. There was 5 on my road and u can drive it in 4 mins or less😂😂
@@brianharley6452 Is Glenrothes (of which I had only vaguely heard) bigger than Milton Keynes? I do not know but I think we should be told. Surely it could not challenge MK as the Roundabout Capital of the UK.
Amazed at the inclusion of Wolverhampton and Swindon.
Especially when Dudley was in the top 10 boring places to live in UK and Wolverhampton is not a million miles from Dudley.
I'm more shocked that Glasgow somehow managed to make this list, it's an utter and absolute shit hole
As someone born and raised in Wolves, yeah same. Often joke around with friends and family of how much of a shithole it is. (Ok it's not THAT bad but)
@@Nintendan95 And do they appreciate your so-called jokes on the subject?
@@653j521 I can imagine they do. everyone who lives or has lived here thinks it's a dump but we will defend it when people are too harsh. only people from wolves can poke fun at wolves.
I’m from Cambridge and when I heard it’s “affordable” I laughed my head off 😂 we’re on the list of the most expensive cities in the country to live and are more expensive here than parts of London.
This guy's lists are just awful. It's like this guy been to these place once and read some quick snippets on wikipedia.
Agree entirely. I just posted my comment before reading yours
Well according to the information about this channel the person is giving his location as Ukraine and I don't think he has a clue about any of the places on any of his ridiculous lists.
I live in Cambridge and completely agree! The cost of living in the city is astronomical!
Yep I stopped taking this list seriously when he labelled Cambridge as "affordable". In my previous job I had to research this type of thing and incomes, especially of normal middle/working class folks and Cambridge was an eye-opener!
"Honey you said we're moving to the best place in the UK! Could it be London, no maybe Bath? Edinburgh is a lovely option too. Oh I'm so excited!" "No no darling, we're going to the Barcelona of the North...Swindon Town awaits!" "I'm leaving you."
@@djh9022 it's a joke, Edinburgh's nickname is the "Athens of the North" and I thought I'd use it here.
I once had the great misfortune to be short of petrol while making my way home to Carmarthenshire from Oxfordshire. I became hopelessly enmeshed in a bewildering tangle of roundabouts, mini roundabouts and little twisting roads that led nowhere, all on the outskirts of Swindon. I was apprehended by a woman Police Officerette in a patrol car who asked me, roughly "What the 'ell are you doing ?" After a brief explanation she gave me instructions which were supposed to lead to a petrol station but never did. I eventually found one myself, quite by chance.
If we ever do become invaded by a foreign power I hope they go to Swindon where they will go aimlessly in circles for ever and ever, to be picked off from the sky by the RAF
😂
@Andrew Williams😂my experience of Swindon in the 70s was being smacked in the face at a petrol station, by what I thought was a long haired hippie, I was a hippie at the time, so much for love and peace, as for Wolverhampton, this list is a piss take!
🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😂
This channel lost all credibility for me when it put Swindon as the number 1 best place to live in the UK
Who else choked or slapped themselves when he said the words: 'Number one - Swindon'??
I grew up in Plymouth! It's a great place to be a child growing up, a fabulous place to be a college or university student, and a lovely place to retire and grow old in... but for all those years outside of those stages... not so much. The majority of job opportunities sit squarely in hospitality (which are seasonal, and therefore attract the aforementioned college students, so you're competing with them,) or care work, which you've really got to be cut out for. Not many industry or 'professional' type career opportunities down there, so most young adults end up leaving the town to get better jobs in other parts of the country. And now you have the problem of 'Holiday Commuters' pushing up the house prices, because these people on six-figure salaries in London buy property down there for 'weekend getaways,' which pushes up the house prices and means the locals who grew up there now can't afford to buy a house *in their own town.* Meanwhile, the economy also slows down because all these Holiday Commuters have bought up all the decent houses but are hardly ever there to use the shops and local businesses, so they make less money.
Shrewsbury is like that (Where I live)
It's a crap hole.
Hello😊😊
But the locals are not exactly innocent, as they were more happy to take the money from the Londoners in the first place!
theres no place to hide in uk -- russia will wipe it out.
If I could choose one place to live in the UK it would be Keswick in The Lake District Cumbria. Beautifully clean place and has everything you need, friendly people and just a few minutes walk from the town centre to Derwent Water Lake which has stunning scenery. Love it and have many great memories.
Great choice. Lovely place, always feels quieter & more laid back than Bowness, Ambleside & Grasmere.
Glasgow! OMG. Did my PhD there, the weather is dreadful. Has amazing culture, lovely people etc but if I lived there the endless grey damp days would destroy my soul.
I live in Taunton Somerset and i have lived in quite a few places in England and I love it here and its winters are not so cold as Scotland.
Is this a comedy channel? Because I'm laughing my head off! Wolverhampton? Swindon? Plymouth?
Swindon lol lol

Swindon?!i laughed my head of when I saw this!
My top four places Oxford Cambridge Glasgow Edinburgh all have great architecture and vibrent areas to stay and nice green parks
Swindon!! You might as well have put Slough. Stratford upon Avon is beautiful and Bristol is fun with plenty of entertainment and good options for eating out.
I lived in Edinburgh for a while during my childhood and I can confirm it is the greatest city in the world.
Why?
Norwich is a fine city - it says so on the sign. It should definitely be on this list.
Please don't put it on the list. The fewer people who know about it the better.....it's an oasis in a desolate country.
@@snowysnowyriver Yeah, you're probably right. I've always said one of the joys of Norfolk is that it isn't a drive-thru county - unless you're heading for the North Sea - so most outsider-people don't even know it's there. No motorways, lots of B roads and By roads for tourists to get lost on - brilliant.

I've got an head ache with laughter after watching this list, some right dumps and I've personally seen them. Of for Paracetamol 😂!
This was the best comedy video I've seen for a long, long time!!! (I do agree on York, though).
Swindon and Wolverhampton??? Best laugh I've had in a long while
Exeter, lived there for a few years in the 60's but visited this past September.Changed but still beautiful.
I had my suspicions that this was a satirical humour channel and these were confirmed by the No. 1 choice of Swindon. By most people's reckoning Swindon would be ranked amongst the most desolate and depressing. It did give me a genuine laugh. Thanks to whoever made this programme! Surprised Slough did not make No. 1 though!
I was wondering where Bath was
I have done well I have lived in Wolverhampton and Swindon
And also York being safe… because of its walls! 😂
This has to be a joke. Glasgow is an okay city should definitely not be in the top 30.
@@nacantremember Bath is way too nice for this list.
An unconventional list. I don't think anybody watching had Swindon in their Top 50. Wolverhampton and Glasgow were bold choices also. Seems rent and commuting cost are the key variables here. Leisure facilities? Crime rate? Education? Nah, not important. So Swindon it is then. I apologize to all the Swindonians - had never thought of you living in the best place of the UK. Now we know! We'll all moving there now. It's about to get busy
I’ve just got here from another vid he did where he reckons Torquay is the worst place In England to live so I’d take this list with a pinch of salt

I'm off to Swindon for the money, lol. (I bought "Love Me Do" for my girl the day it came out at Swindon's music shop. Those were the days.)
Swindon was the first town I ever visited where walking down the high street I literally forgot where I was it was so indistinctive.
Have lived in both Sailsbury and York. Lovely cities enjoyed by both younger and older generations.
Yeah used to live in Easingwold York that's a nice place.
Not so much Wolverhampton lol
What is there to do for young people in Salisbury? Everything catered towards young people has been shut off and redirected to Amesbury. Salisbury is a town for geriatrics and tourists now.

I’ve heard bad story’s of friends getting in bad situations on nights out for not being Scottish

Wolverhampton 🤣🤣🤣 I used to live just outside Wolverhampton, and worked in it, and it's an absolute dive!!!!

Yup went there last year after several decades -I was shocked!
Beverley, East Yorkshire. A beautiful Georgian market town with a race course and a medieval minster.
Yes it's lovely
I liked Beverly when I visited a few years ago. But it's dangerously overshadowed by its ugly nemesis Hull.
Also one of the best pubs in England. The White Horse aka Nelly's!
you're having a laugh putting Swindon 1st, might as well have said slough or Scunthrope lol
I spent 3 years in Swindon. Have to say I'm surprised to find it topping the list- unless they only surveyed higher earners, or there's been a massive influx of well-paid jobs. People also used to say don't live in a district beginning with P, and it had one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy back then.
When I visited there forget abour Miracle Junctions but the Weatherspoon had like a proper Library 🎉

Oxford is a good place to live. I live in London but I’v visited before and it’s actually a nice place
Very easy to get into Swindon but the roads are jammed going the other way.
I grew up in Plymouth and yes it was nice, though there were some less desirable parts like anywhere.
I'm from glasgow. It's got lots of concert venues. And people enjoy socialising at the theatre or the cinema or even see your favourite bands at a concert venue of your choice
Most underrated city in my opinion as well. Found myself in love with Glasgow over the summer. It's for sure got a really bad name but my visit dismissed what everyone says about it.
Oh, the famous "Glasgow effect".
Have you visited Shettleston, Govanhill or Hope Street lately? Absolute dumps.
The weather… it’s the gloomy grey weather. Scotland would be perfect with more sun
Wolverhampton? At that point, I switched off.

My wife and I live just outside Swindon and when the No 1 Town came up we just were sat there speechless. 10 minutes later we still haven't passed comment as our bottom jaws are locked to our chests. I don't want to be disrespectful to Swindon Town, I've lived here for nearly 35 years and it has many pleasant areas, but there is no way this Town deserves the title this site has given it.

The best thing about Swindon is the fast rail and road connections to get the hell out…
Swindon, Wolverhampton are a bit dodgy on there!
It depends where in Wolverhampton. You have got really lovely places. Unfortunately the city centre is a disgrace. It has so much potential though. People are overall friendly. People make a place :) Let's not judge people by the cover sometimes.
Swindon is infested with beggars
@@helenefrench4275 please what is all about Wolverhampton? I just got admission into the school and preparing to relocate
@@rabiattoyin3113 You have got lovely places like Wightick Manor, Bantock Park, Penn, a theatre, an art Gallery ( it is not Paris or London of course but it is quite pleasant), Saint Peter Church, an hospital etc. Not far from Wolverhampton, you can take a bus to visit the Walsall Gallery ( free of charge) with paintings from Delacroix, Picasso, Gaugin, Matisse etc It is clean, spacious with a souvenir shop with a cafe near by. Wolverhampton It is about 20 minutes by train from Birmingham, you can take the tramway if you prefer ( it s a bit bit cheaper than the train). As Wolverhampton is in the Midlands, you have got easy access to Telford, Stafford, Shrewsbury, London, Manchester, Nottingham etc. The city is surrounded by lovely villages like Albrighton, Bilbrook etc : easy access by bus and trains. You have got also two big parks: East Park and West Park. Both being a short distance from the city centre. A cinema : the Lighthouse with regular Meetups and an excellent selection of films, cultural meetings etc. The city centre is a bit of a disgrace like many cities in England but there is potential and things are getting better. I heard it used to be a much better place ( a long time ago) with House of Fraser which closed a couple of years ago. The city centre is not the poshest place on hearth but
people are usually friendly and helpful ( never had any problems). There is a Mark and Spencer, a Sainsbury ( a bit far from the city center though), and some regular shops you usually find in any city in the UK. There is a tramway from the city which goes to Birmingham as well.
I am an American who lives outside of Swindon, and honestly, it reminds me of an American city like Chicago, if you’re not from the area. You see people staring at you like they’re in a gang, looking like they’re about to make a move. Causing you to leave the scene for safety reasons, knife crime in Swindon doesn’t help. Graffiti absolutely everywhere even in the city center just makes it more depressing.
What about Wales? Wales has the lowest crime rate of all of the UK and is a beautiful country with lovely people and I live there and can tell you that I've been around the UK and Wales is a wonderful place to live.
Have stayed in Mumbles.... Really nice
@@gj91471 yes it's a lovely place, mumbles is called the Welsh Riviera and has a wonderful castle and a really nice beach and very nice pubs and shops too, I live about 25 miles from there and it's one of my favourite and places for getting away for a day, thanks for your reply Graham.👍🏴

Wales has the lowest crime rate because it has a smaller population than Scotland and a significantly smaller population than England. It's better to look at crime rates from a percentage.
Are you joking 😅 Swindon 😂😂 what about Winchester 🤦♀️
No idea where you got these towns from but Swindon as No.1 your having a wind up!!!!!!
It's very good video!
My favourite is Sheffield, it feels very safe, excellent center, for someone into professional recreational facilities.
You have to be kidding me. It's the lowest paid jobs in England for a city. It's dirty, smelly horrible and they don't speak English it's a grimey place...oh!!!! and dog 💩 all over the place, don't look up when walking.....
I'm been living in England for almost 20 years, I never thought Swindon as the best place to live in UK. UK has many wonderful cities & towns, but Swindon in my opinion isn't. For me Bath, Strafford Avon & Devon are ones of the best places to live in England. United Kingdom in General, I think Wales has the best places, especially Noth Wales. Oxford is very expensive, I live close to Oxford and you have to be wealthy to afford a decent place there. Even when I was working there, I couldn't afford to paid for a decent apartment.
Thanks for the laugh at the end. Swindon is surrounded by beautiful places but that's it. Everyone leaves swindon to shop as the town centre is desolate with only shops like the Pound Shop and Primark - could have been better but the Council don't like making improvements.
Nice video tnx for sharing
I am of course prejudiced. I loved in Swansea, South Wales, for three years. The beautiful sea, the wonderful Swansea University facing it, the cosmopolitan nature of the city, the relatively less expensive cost of living, the calm and safe City that Swansea is, the Mumbles bay, well, I could go on. If ever have to choose a city for permanent residence, I will any day choose Swansea.
We all know that Slough is better than Swindon, David Brent proved that when the Swindon lot transferred after their office was shut.
Slough is a bad place to live 😂😂😂
When I saw Swindon as the No. 1 choice, all I could do was laugh...with Jon Richardson!!!

@@Matthew89593 no it's not it's alot better now they are spending money on it, Manchester is a shit hole it's like going back 50 years
Agree with your list, but I would replace Manchester with Cardiff (I'm not Welsh!)
You're right 😁😁
who told them there was no crime in Plymouth, They obviously haven't picked up a paper ever. Also I definitely wouldn't put Wolverhampton on this list while it is not the worst place I have been its definitely not one of the best either.
Wolverhampton isn't great, but neighbouring Walsall makes it look like Monte Carlo.
No doubt quite fabulous to reside in any one of those places when you adjust yourselves with your job satisfaction and good friend circle.
👏👏Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Izmir-TURKEY. 👋
How about Chatham Kent ? I spent some valuable time there and found good and best place. Any views ?
Congratulations for your national holiday on 21st April Great Britain from your friends in Germany
Deutschland is so schon auch. Ich mochte gern nach Hamburg und Shwering Fahren. Tut mir leid : mein niveau auf Deutsch is nicht sehr gut :)

Hello
Thanks brother ❤
We loved our stay in Germany recently, so friendly and lots to see
Nice video 👍💖
I’m from Wolverhampton id recommend Heath town, whitmore reans, all saints, bilston, willenhall, Blakenhall, parkfield and eastfield and bushbury
Hello, please can you shed more light on why you would recommend Willenhall as a good place to live in Wolverhampton?
An interesting list but for me number one is Norwich for history, low crime and the feeling you are in a confident 'capital' city- with two universities, two cathedrals, a castle, one of the oldest and biggest markets in the UK and a young friendly vibrant population, Norwich is the best!
Until Colman’s Mustard moved out of Norwich, they will go down.
@@swaldron5558 you think?! Norwich is doing just fine 😁😜🎉
@Ima Rebel haha! Jealousy is a terrible thing😂
@Ima Rebel in your case then ignorance is bliss?
@Ima Rebel Yep, that’s Normal for Norfolk!
Despite Swindon long being home to one of my favorite bands, XTC, a true challenge of living there would be dealing on a daily basis with all the nerve-racking roundabouts, even mini-roundabouts nestled within larger round-abouts.
One of mine too! ❤️
There are some respectable streets in Swindon
I went to Edinburgh it rained all day long. Visited Oxford, Cambridge.

Amazing
Glasgow was one of the greatest shipbuilding centres.

@@darrensmith2734 But it isn't that great to be on this list mate!!
You can't blame London in why Wolverhampton don't have money money money. I'm glad that Wolverhampton bad days are gone but it still isn't nice but hey at least Wolves are playing well in the Premier League - that is a plus factor lol
Thanks for sharing 👍 mmm 😎
