    I wish there was more detail on what was done, the montage of thinset and tiles being slapped up isn't much help. Like what kind of prep did you do to the brick before starting to tile? What kind of thinset did you use, modified, unmodified? Talk about how and why you used the Schluter edging, etc. Seems a missed opportunity. At least link to an article that contains more details. Searching the family handyman site found no results that related to this video.

    I’ve been watching fireplace transformations for a few hours. This one is my favorite! You accomplished a great look (and I’m less worried about creating a fire hazard than a lot of the other transformations I’ve watched).

    I have a similar fireplace in the corner. It's a small hearth which I've extended out 8" with cinder blocks and 3/4" plywood. I am doing tile over the red brick facade and wasn't sure if mastic or thinset should be used. Great video! Thank you.

    My wife and I are in the process of doing the same thing. Regarding the vintage items you found in the secret pay sand area, we encountered a vantage coffee lid. I was actually hoping for something of more value. lol However i really wish I would of found your diy. Still possible though.

    Can you tile directly over bricks that have been painted over? Or, do I need to first put up a facing like backer board?

  • @ryanandholliebust1916

    I'm about to tile ours. I am guessing that, since I previously painted it, I won't be able to tile directly to the brick. Right?

    good video, but in reverse. You should start from the hideous black synthetic thingy at the end and convert this to beautiful brick wall appearance like it is in the beginning.

    The brick was bad but the after is even worse. Why the large black tile? The dark color just sucks all the air out of the room. I would have done a light color small stone veneer or something. I also think it needs a mantle. Otherwise it looks like a massive stone column in the middle of the wall and it's hard to tell that it's a fireplace. Ugly! I have an old brick fireplace in my living room. My plan is to drywall most of it, add trim for interest, tile the brick that will still be showing around the firebox, and adding a wooden mantle. I think that will make it look modern and match the decor of the rest of the room while still being cozy and functional.

  • @cherylbrown8430
    @cherylbrown8430 Před rokem

    Combustible material so close to a firebox is a no-no. Thats why the space under the face brick was filled with sand and brick, not framed. You built a fire hazard.

  • @dkc9102

    The brick fireplace looked much better. The stone/tile one looks too cold and like an office space and not a home.

    If your home isn't filled with enough existential dread, be sure to install a gloomy concrete monolith in your living room. No wonder people these days are so depressed.
