  • Pandit Santosh Banerjee is one of the few surviving masters of the Kandahar Vani style of Dhrupad. A student of Muhammed Dabir Khan of the Rampur-Senia gharana, he is one the most accomplished players of the Surbahar of our time.
    Apart from having been a performing artist who has toured several countries of Europe, Panditji also retired as the Head of the Department at the Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. Professor Santosh Banerjee, as is his academic title is also known to be one of the finest teachers of the Sitar and Surbahar and students flock to his residence in Kolkata from the world over to receive his talim. The octogenarian currently resides in Calcutta.
    He is married to Chobbi Banerjee, daughter of Sangeetacharya Kashinath Chattopadhyay of the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana and his daughter, Sahana Banerjee is also an accomplished Sitar player and performs regularly in India.

    This is one amazing performance. The Surbahar is played exactly the way it is intended to be played. There is a little resemblance to the Veena, but that is expected. Thank you for this amazing video. Blessings to Pandit ji.

    Very nice unhurried performance. His Ustad, Md. Dabir Khan was my examiner in Sitar in 1969 in West Bengal.

    I used to learn vocals from Panditji's wife Kaki Ma when I was in Calcutta. Currently I learn Vocals from the grand-nephew of Ustad Muhammed Dabir Khan, Ustad Maqbool Hussain Khan of the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana! The intricate web of the Rampur gharanas!

    He is the father of Ms. sahana banerjee ji. He is also fondly called as Prof banerjee.
