I only started following football during the season he was at Madrid so missed his golden years but from the clips I've seen, his record and the reading up that I've done on him he's easily forgotten as times gone by as to just how brilliant he was in his first 5/6 years. People have short memories.

@@RaymarFootball partly being the fact that constant running and fast pace is his kind of game. As he hit mid 20s he continued to rely on pace only and that ultimately lead to further injuries. He needed to develop his game further but injury especially at Real really sidelined him for sometime.

Have heard statements from world class defenders, that Michael Owen possessed genuine pace , could score with either foot and was tremendously gifted in the air for a player of his statute..but once that pace slips with those injuries..also football even back then was cut-throat..clubs and players love to cash in..and with that he was gone..still scored the winner in a Manchester derby.
yeah his body took too much of a beating at a young age and he rushed back into play quickly after those hamstring injuries which only made it worse… but those 2 major injuries he got during his newcastle years was just straight up unlucky

His peak might have been short, but he was an incredible player. His career might have been able to be extended with today's level of sports medicine
I think he peaked earlier than most. He probably peaked before even Messi and Ronaldo. He was a spent force by 26, when most strikers are at their peak.

The first three years of his professional career were just absolutely insane, no team had any idea how to stop this young boy, it was incredible to watch. I do feel bad for him, his career was basically over at 23/24, after that, he was only a shadow of his former self

I remember Owen bursting onto the scene as a 17 year old and he was a phenomenon. His pace was so electrifying defenders had to kick him and injure him which ultimately contributed to shortening his career. The injury against Sweden when he tore his ACL literally was the beginning of the end of his career. He was never the same after that injury. He came back well from other hamstring injuries but the ACL injury forced him to change the way he played, just like it did to Shearer. I'll never forget his Hatrick against Germany in Germany when England won 5-1. That was one of the greatest results as an England fan since that was Germany's first ever defeat on home soil in a world cup qualifier.
The first major setback from which he was severely affected was in 1999 against Leeds. They didn't operate his hamstrings, lost 1 of the 6, lost pace and acceleration. By 2006 he was on his way down for quite a while by his own account. Injury against Sweden the start? That was the very last nail in the coffin
what planet are you on?nobody kicked and injured him to shorten his career thats just something a pure casual fan would say,his game was largely based on his pace and acceleration due to his fast twitch muscle fibres making him so explosive,he played so many matches at such a young age his hamstrings and body couldnt cope anymore he was to quick for his own good and ultimately burned out by 24 ish,he changed his game and became more of a fox in the box with clever not explosive movement and still had an ok career with newcastle man utd and stoke even after his legs had failed him

Played to many games when he was young and rushed back to many times from injuries. Had he been looked after he would have had much more success.

There was a feeling at the time that Liverpool did not rest him properly and rushed him back from injury too quickly. Man United youngsters of that era enjoyed long careers: Giggs, Scholes, Neville, and Beckham.
Tore his hamstring, then did his knee, went from being a pacey striker who played deep off the shoulder of the last defender, to being a player who had ltd mobility and re established himself as a fox in the box. He was never going to recapture his previous ability at the top level, so he evolved to utilise his positional sense and finishing accuracy, if he’d never been world class, he’d never have been able to continue at the highest level as long as he did.
Despite what FIFA wants to believe, I think heading the ball without a helmet causes brain damage. I suspect Michael may have suffered sub- clinical brain damage from heading the ball. And slowed that incredible edge and turn of speed he had, while others stood still. He is still one of my few "greats".

He was absolutely brilliant in those first years at Milan, I thiught he's a absolute future world star. But then the injuries started and basically destroyed him before his mid 20s.
I remember in 1995 playing in a Nordic youth championship in Sweden, where England also were participating. We were staying in the same hotel as them but were unfortunately not in the same group as them, so I did not get to play against them. Many of our players were big Liverpool fans, so they got quite disappointed when they found out that there was only one player from Liverpool and he was this small skinny kid. But they ended up winning the tournament and the small skinny kid ended as player of the tournament and top scorer.
What a striker. Imagine if Liverpool had looked after him as pep did with foden instead of flogging him to death.

@@RaymarFootball Liverpool took the best care of him they knew how. Sports science and particularly everything around injury and load were simply not known at the time. We take it for granted today that young players shouldn't play too many minutes and that overall load and sprints need to be closely monitored because injury drastically increases chances of further injury, both in terms of getting a repeat of the same injury and additional injuries elsewhere as biomechanics change to adapt to an injury and place load on other parts. A big part of the reason we know that, particularly the former, is the cautionary tale of Owen. He played in the days when players had only just stopped drinking themselves under the table at every opportunity (in England at least), and if you were a proper footballer, you declared yourself fit the moment you could reasonably move about. We know better now, but not then. Even so, no amount of sports science and being careful can avoid these sorts of things all the time, just reduce some risks. Look at Eden Hazard. Yes, he hasn't helped himself at times, but his body absolutely gave out on him and it's not as if having a few steaks and being a few pounds over just blows your body up (if it were the case, I'd be in a wheelchair).
I used to buy him back in LMA manager 2001, he scored 75 goals one season in the league, champs league and FA cup.

To be fair about his time with Real Madrid, he was consistently being played from the bench around the 60th or 70th minute and above, which does affect his goal-scoring stats (which is still respectable considering he still scored double-figures as a super sub).
Still, the team was already too star-studded, plus he was already known to be injury prone at the time, so he had to see it coming.

Such a shame that Owen missed out the historic Champions League victory with Liverpool (Miracle of Istanbul) when he left for Real Madrid in Summer 2004, then somehow ruined his own career completely with catastrophic injuries, especially that one during England vs Sweden at the 2006 World Cup, after which FA blames Newcastle United for selecting him while being unfit enough due to the injuries.

the greatest strength of owen is his technique to run behind defender (break offside trap) like inzanghi, and his instinct to finish the goal. It is very apparent when he gets older and slower, u can can see him not losing these 2 skillsets.
He had some similarities to Inzaghi, yes they both played off the shoulder wonderfully, but Inzaghi was more of the pure poacher, playing off the shoulder with a small burst of speed and his finishing was as clinical as it got from anywhere in the box. Literally half a chance and he would score. He would spend an entire game getting constantly caught offside, then have one chance where he wasn't and it would be a goal.
Where as Owen was a lethal finisher and played off the shoulder, but he could do it from further out because he was lightning quick, defenders rarely caught him. So he was a devastating player to have on the break. Where as Inzaghi was better in shorter spaces. But Owen also had much more ability to beat a man compared to Inzaghi too. If Owen was isolated against a defender or 2 he would often drive at them and beat them with ease.

Agreed, the number of, and different types of goals, with such a high level of technique and composure was amazing for a player so young. His pace was very much an asset but he much more than just pace, the types of goals showed that.

Those heavy boots caused him to put extra effort into running, which took toll on his hamstrings.

Some real harsh comments on here without any nuance. Owen was a phenom and unplayable as a child ; *'Solid' technique...but super- fast, great footballing IQ / positioning and SUPREME finishing = prime Michael Owen* . Ultimately, he was simply too fast for his leg muscles to cope (just like R9) and you can't do anything about that. N.B. Perhaps modern sports surgery would have repaired his hamstrings better and given him an added 3 -4 peak years.

I truly put it mostly down to most people's physiology can't handle that level of speed / movement. But yes, treatment standard back then (when he began having problems) sadly wasn't as good as now. Beware though ...look how Ansu Fati's career was still badly compromised even today...

@RaymarFootball yeah I know, what got me was nobody touched him his leg just went, I saw a similar thing at school about a year before Owen's injury, I was on the rugby team and one of our wingers was running down the wing in training, then while running with no one near him he just started screaming and collapsed in a heap on the floor, same injury as Owen, he came back a few months later but was never the same again, when my cousin asked me "why do you think that?" I said "it looked like what happened to Bryn at school" it's a horrible injury

Can't remember where I read this, I'm sure but one sports journalist claimed Owen may have suffered from congenitally-weak hamstrings - because his father (a former player himself) was also plagued with hamstring injuries during his career.

He was devastating at a young age, can't remember what the competition was doing at that time but he was certainly one of the most dangerous strikers in the world at the time he won this. The injuries were ridiculous though, he once - and I forget the name of the actual injury - he once managed to detach part of his shin from his leg by stretching for the ball. Might have been against Arsenal. As good as he was at a very young age though, Robbie Fowler was better. Pushing prime Alan Shearer for the golden boot in his 1st full season. Same deal, injuries did for him.
in my humble opinion prime micheal owen and prime brazilian ronaldo are the best two strikers ever,both blessed with those fast twitched muscle fibres in their legs that made their change of pace and top speed literally unstoppable for a short period,unfortunately that explosiveness was their ultimate downfall as their bodies couldnt keep up,they had played so many games so young that their bodies burnt out fairly young,it would be great to see them nowadays with the advances in sport science and recovery of the body,there is a great interview on sky sports i think it is where owen breaks down his career and laments the fact that at newcastle man utd and stoke he had to basically change his whole game because his body was just unable to make the runs that he would want to make,he had to just become a fox in the box with clever movement to get goals and not his previous explosive unstoppable self,and he still actually had a decent goal return when he played despite his hamstrings giving out at basically 24 ish

Neymar hasn’t lost his skill or production though. Last year he had 18 goals and 18 assists in like 28-30 matches

I think doing step overs is a vital factor. Each step over is an additional stress to the knee. And if the foot isn't plant straight, it ruins your knee. And he is the king of step overs.
