    9.8 is very apprpriate. A routine with three release moves and a stuck landing deserves a 9.8 and this was back in 98 when scores like that were given out more often. Maloney and Ray got scores like that too.

    • @rolandgreen7484
      @rolandgreen7484 Před 6 lety +7

    If Vanessa did this uneven bar routine in the event finals in Sydney Khorkina could kiss her uneven bars gold medal goodbye. Vanessa was really capable of winning all 6 golds in Sydney, even uneven bars, as this video proves.

      @@turbojon8117 Except many US gymnasts got bigger scores at the Games than they got here. Danchtzer scored MUCH higher on both bars and floor at the Games than she did at these 98 Nationals. Ray scored bigger on vault and beam by far at the Games than she did here. So that shows Atler would likely score much higher than her 9.8 here at the Games and easily beat Khorkina for bars gold.

    They should've taken that Comaneci out a long long time before this. I realize that she hit it just fine here but, this was not typical of Atler by any means and the score is extremely high for this set. For some strange reason, her coaches gave me the creeps. I mean, that is always the goal of any gymnast, especially back in those times. The "specialist" thing wasn't really a popular thing until around 2004. I was an elite gymnast back in the early and mid 90's and not training and competing on all 4 events was really unheard of. I mean, of course you would see gymnasts compete in event finals or possibly only compete on one or a few events in a team final at major international assignments but, you just didn't hear of a gymnast only training on 3 or less events.

    I think it was the general pressure surrounding her, that caused her to have this huge mental block in competition. She became the anointed one, the next one in line to become the “it” girl in USAG. She mentioned in an interview that she didn’t want what happened to Kim Zmeskal to happen to her. I think her coaches put too much pressure on her to try and win every competition. Sadly her support system failed her, in my opinion. Her natural talent was too great, and so Steve and Beth thought she would just get over her mental block on UB in competition. It’s a shame her talents weren’t fostered properly during that quad.

      @@carrietremble that was an unusual circumstance- fpur team members meant all arounders were a must. It’s why they immediately decided to go back to five team members. And the two individuals being all arounders was surprising, and one of the few instances where that was the case. Take China- Fan Yilin was an individual participant- mostly just for uneven bars. • @rolandgreen7484

      @@saragrant9749 Totally agreed. If she were born 8 years later she is an even better version of Sacramone. Or an almost equally good version of the great Cheng Fei. Even 4 years later would work just fine as 2001-2004 quad was already using the new format. A 6-3-3 format it would be easy to include her even though her bars was almost as useless as someone who doesn't even train it consistently like Sacramone. You could have her do a token bar routine in qualifying maybe if you wanted to give her a shot at the All Around, as there wasn't much risk there, but regardless you could use her, including in team finals, on all the other events. Under even a 6-5-4 format she was still too much risk with her bars she fell on 98% of the time. This routine could be put into a time capsule as it is so rare.
      Even an old Gutsu tried a comeback in 2003 doing everything but bars, even though it didn't work (strange since bars was one of her best events in 91-92, but maybe she had shoulder problems since retiring or something).

With 6 on the team and 5 up on every event, if one gymnast on the team did not do an event at all, there was no margin for error if a gymnast got hurt after the time an alternate could be put in.
