    Vanessa Atler is one of the most jaw-dropping powerful gymnasts I've ever seen! She would've medaled at the Olympics.

      Summer of Kitty Love I would have loved to see her at the Olympics
      But sadly she had a couple AMAZING years then a year before the Olympics were looming she started having problems. I was heartbroken when every time she did a catch and release on bars she fell. I think the stress really burned her out early

    I think if your bars routine would've been changed everything would be different. But anyway Vanessa you'll always be a class act to all Americans. Thank you for showing us your beautiful style of gymnastics. Your accomplishments matter. Expectations don't.

    no, she was an amazing gymnast that had consistency issues near the end of her career. she ended up off the 2000 olympics team when just 2 years earlier she was on fire.

    I remember this should used to come on weekdays when I was in 2-3rd grade. I never actually watched it but on the rare occasions I got to stay home from school I clearly reason this would come on the same time as the price is right. After that who wants to be a millionaire would come on

    She technically placed 6th. People who had lower scores than her made the team.

    • @MissLilRedRooster
      @MissLilRedRooster Před 6 lety +6

      That was such an awful selection process, the fact that she placed higher than people who made the team always was so upsetting.

    • @WhoCaresHo
      @WhoCaresHo Před 6 lety +2

      MissLilRedRooster the reason that it is that way is because someone can be having a bad day and when they have a full year of competing at the top of their game and they falter in one competition that doesn’t make sense to put someone who got lucky on a team just because the better gymnast had a bad day! If the top gymnast had a bad day and someone wins because of it that doesn’t make them the best gymnast, that makes them someone that got a lucky break and they don’t want that on the Olympic team! They look at your all around record, how you perform under pressure ALWAYS, not just the trials... it’s the reason that we have been unbeatable since this selection process began so if you aren’t aware of why they do it that way you can’t say it’s stupid

    It's interesting to hear that she felt relief after not making the Olympic team and, hearing what she had to go through, it completely makes sense. Granted she isn't a person that shows her feelings very much, but how could a parent not see or sense that something wasn't right? Yes, you want your child to excel and you want them to succeed in something that you have spent so much time and effort supporting, but why would you not listen to them when they needed you most?

    I learned the difficult way that regardless how hard you try, You will never be able to please someone. They will never appreciate the effort you put forth to get that seal of approval or "I am proud of you.". Took me Years to figure it out then realized that I could try to have pleased my Mother, but had to be PROUD of Me first and appreciate myself. Unfortunately this happened after her Death.
    I so hope Vanessa made Peace with HERSELF and continues to do so and has some kind of relationship with her Mom or was able to walk away without any regrets. No Child or Adult should be put under that pressure.

    @BoraBoraGirl2001 just wanted to say that coaching is not therapy. they are not therapists, in fact, if a person is experiencing a nervous breakdown, clinical depression, or any other mental issue- they cannot coach the person. they should be referred to a psychologist or psychiatrist. coaches coach healthy ppl that want help to achieve their goals (very much like a sports coach). some are good, and some are bad. this is a tv show, and in no way "reality".

    @SexyLiLLeilaniMya i agree with that too its a shame too she was the most talented athlete ever and to have that pulled out from under her was a shame and i think its sad that they couldn't have taken that 1 skill from her bar routine that she kept missing for 3 years they robbed that girl from everything she worked so hard at and from the thing that she loved doing and they took the fun out of it for her and i think thats the saddest part

    @JLFAN2009 Před rokem

    I think that Vanessa's main problem was bad timing -- which is commonly the case with athletes who don't realize their full potential. The Olympics are held only once in every four years, and anything can happen within a cycle -- such as the dreaded injuries. In her case, however, the problem seemed to be mostly of mentality: as of 2000, she was pressured to be an all-arounder, because as of then, the public attitude was that "gymnastics is all about being the next Mary Lou" -- which she (like Kristie Phillips, Kim Zmeskal, and Dominique Moceanu) had been hyped up to be. Unfortunately, she had not yet overcome her demon on bars -- and therefore entered the Nationals and Trials with a defeatist mentality (she failed to register a single hit routine). In her mind, she was already eliminated by the judges -- despite the fact that the selection process had made it clear that you didn't have to be an all-arounder, that you didn't necessarily have to finish at or near the top at the championships, to be considered for the Olympic team. That you could make it as a specialist -- even though 3 up, 3 count was not yet the rule: after all, in each rotation, an athlete sat out. Had Vanessa understood that she could have been considered as a three-event person, then she might have approached the whole thing with a different attitude. Instead, it was all or nothing: either you're an all-arounder, and moreover, the top-seeded athlete (meaning that you have the best chance to earn the highest scores), or you're not on the team at all. Gymnastics history since 2000 has shown us that you can enjoy a rich, happy, and fulfilled career as a competitor without being an all-arounder: look at Cheng Fei, Alicia Sacramone, and Catalina Ponor, as examples. Indeed, the all-around has largely lost its prestige, anyway (a parallel development to the rise of specialists): winning it doesn't mean that you're the *best* gymnast -- only that you were the luckiest on a given day.

    • @nmelgar74
      @nmelgar74 Před 8 měsíci

      Vanessa came in the era before the specialist era started. During her time, they still pushed for all arounders and they were not picking gymnasts solely because they were strong in two or three events. The specialist era came closely after this. She was in the wrong squad basically. She was stuck in a strange spot actually. She was too young to compete in worlds in 1997 by just two weeks sadly enough and that was when she was peaking. I think if she was in the squad after the one she was in she would have made it as a specialist at the Olympics for sure. I wish she had not given up and continued as she could have made it to the 2004 as a specialist

    What is that crap ? Only questions like "tell us about eating" (see how the lady is delighted to jump onto that subject !) or "did you have the right to cry", or other clichés... Is that what's interesting with gymnastics ?
    It's not a mater of taboo : it's Atler's personal life, so what's the point showing that to the whole world ?
    And those stupid and fake life coaches or psychologists, what a joke !!!
    Enough for me, I am not able to watch any more. That is just rubish and trash TV. Shame...
