  • Hi Friends.
    Painting watercolor shouldn't be about rules but about finding JOY and using your precious free time to elevate your life. I'm here to push fears aside, avoid complicated tools and inspire free spirited, mood shifting watercolor experiences in short bursts of time.
    1. Loose with pencil
    2. Bold brushstrokes
    3. Sketching with watercolor
    I hope you'll paint along with me and ask all the questions you want in comments! Post your creations using the hashtags #artforjoysake and #forgetrulesforgetrightrememberjoy
    Happy Painting!

    I can’t wait to start my watercolor journey. I am leaving on vacation tomorrow and I packed my (your) journal and paints and brushes. If I don’t start now it’s ok but I’m doing a daily acrylic painting challenge and I thought if I can’t get to my daily acrylic then maybe I can start some practice stokes with your book. I love your videos and will continue watching. I am so happy I found you and you have inspired me so much.

    I was not aware that there are rules in watercolor. There are techniques to get a certain look you may like. These are your techniques or rules to get the Kristy Rice look. Which are lovely, loose and very freeing way to paint. I am amazed that you don't a lot of bleeding with the amount of water you use. It must of taken you years to learn that. You are very talented. Thank so much for sharing your techniques with us!!!

    At last! I've found a tutor who paints the way I like. I used to water colour years ago, but could never get my work fluid enough for my liking. I always ended up over working the paint and was disappointed withe result. Thank you Kristy , now I am eager to have another try. Can't wait for your book to arrive, I'm champing at the bit !

    One thing I have noticed is that a risslon brush works the best with this paper! Sable absorbs too much water thus grabbing hold of the fibers, synthetic depending on the kind is too stiff thus pilling the paper if pressing too hard. So risslon brushes which are a synthetic faux squirrel isn't as floppy as real squirrel and not as absorbent but holds water and pigment really well all while being soft in the bristle! Just an FYI on what I experimented with. Love your books! Can't wait to order the last one in your collection!

      Thank you so much for saying this!!!! I've had no issue with 100% synthetic but I don't use a lot of pressure on my brush at all :)

    Lovely! Adding lots of pigment at once is how I watercolour too. No apologies for doing it my own way. I love lots of colour and putting it down makes me happy. Your approach is perfect for me - thank you. I paint to be happy, but I also want to learn a bit and improve my work. Your books are beautiful!
    The thing I tell people starting out is: please don't try super cheap paints and then say you don't like watercolour. Those things are basically chalk and sit on top of the paper. When I used them (at a make'n'take) I didn't enjoy painting and the results were awful. They actually brush off the paper once dry! Nice paints are such a joy to use. Real paints don't tend to come in a palette of 36 little circles 😆 You're better off having ten basic colours of real paint (even a student version from a good brand) than 36 chalky colours. Real paints last so much longer too.

    Kirsty thank you so much for sharing your painting gifts with us. I started painting in the woodland book today and I love it. I have ordered the R&L dagger brushes today and can't wait for them to arrive. I have always been unsure about watercolour but your lovely relaxed painting style has encouraged me to throw out all my preconceptions and enjoy the JOY of the paint and not worry about the RULES! God bless you. Janet (UK).

      Kristy Rice Hi Kristy. I received the dagger brushes and have been using them in the Woodland book. I need a lot more practice, before I could come close to your technique with them, as I am more used to using round watercolour brushes, but I do like the effects they give. I really love the Woodland book. it's so relaxing to sit down and just paint without struggling to think of subjects. I shall continue to watch you videos and learn. Thank you again for sharing. God bless. Janet.

    • @KristyRice
      @KristyRice  Před 7 lety

      Ahhh wonderful news Janet!! I'd suggest using the beginning pages of the book to make tons of practice strokes with your brush. See how thin and thick you can go with just that one brush :) Maybe I'll do a video on brush exercises!

    • @janetparker2722
      @janetparker2722 Před 7 lety

      Hi Kristy. A video on brush techniques would be great. I learn better visually rather than from looking at books, but when you learn to paint it just seems to be assumed that you know how to use all the different brushes properly. I look forward to watching if you are able to do that. Thanks for all you encouragement. Janet

    This was a cute simple tutorial. You taught a hard edge, a soft edge, charging, lifting, wet in wet blends, glazing, without all of the technical terms in an intuitive fun easy to understand way. I've watched so much about watercoloring in coloring books because I'm just a beginner and I look forward to purchasing, Woodland specifically, but I gathered a lot of tips from this short video. I've seen some more experienced colorists create these wonderful watercolor bloom backgrounds where it looks like the water color pools and swirls on paper that's not meant for watercolor and I wonder to myself, how in the world did they achieve that look without using too much water on such paper. I would like to know a technique for that if you see fit to explain.

    • @KristyRice
      @KristyRice  Před 3 lety

      So glad this was helpful!! I find for beginners it’s wayyy too easy to get caught up in technical explanations so I try to keep things simple :)

    Thank you for your wonderful books and videos! So inspiring! I was very interested to hear that you mix watercolors from pigment. I have been looking everywhere for a good description or a video on how to do it since I discovered that Sennelier has pigments and a watercolor medium but can't find any. Would you consider making a video about making your own watercolors?

      Oh I'm so happy you love them!! Oh wow the background question - I plan on doing a demo on this soon...but the quick answer is work in small areas and use a lot of water so you can keep a wet edge as you fill an area with color - you don't want any part of the area to dry until you've filled the entire area :)
