  • Gilda (1946) is a black-and-white film noir directed by Charles Vidor. It stars Glenn Ford and Rita Hayworth in her signature role as the ultimate femme fatale. The film was noted for cinematographer Rudolph Mate's lush photography, costume designer Jean Louis' wardrobe for Hayworth (particularly for the dance numbers), and choreographer Jack Cole's staging of "Put the Blame on Mame" and "Amado Mio", sung by Anita Ellis.

I first saw this movie as a kid. My mom used to drag me to old movies at a theater that played them. I usually paid more attention to the concession stand, but that night, I sat up straight and gawked at the screen. This number from "Gilda" and the dancer knocked me out. Rita Hayworth owned that scene and the whole movie. The way she sauntered across the screen was mesmerizing! I put down my candy bar and I immediately became a huge fan of hers. Sure, Marilyn Monroe was plenty sexy, but Rita
oozed a more sophisticated brand of sex appeal. She was incredible l!

Yeah, except that the angelic voice belonged to 'ghost singer' Anita Ellis, who lived to be 95 but also suffered from dementia in her last years.
Rita resented Harry Cohn at Columbia refusing to let her take coaching so that she could perform her own songs- unlike Ginger Rogers or Betty Grable but like most dancer-actresses. Cohn said people would turn up to see Rita whether dubbed or not. During wartime USO tours, servicemen would clamor for her to sing her movie hits and she would have to make excuses.
However, in the brief guitar version of 'Mame' it is Rita.

I was shocked to read that Princess Yasmin's father, Prince Aly Khan died in a car accident around 1960. Thank you for posting the breathtaking beauty of Rita Hayworth !

    • @JohnSydney225
      @JohnSydney225 Před 2 lety +12

Rita wasn't pregnant while filming "Gilda." Every scene was filmed in chronological order (I forget the term for that). In 1943 she made "Cover Girl," and in 1944 she made "Tonight And Every Night." It was in "Every Night" that Rita was pregnant. All the dance numbers were filmed first (she was three months pregnant when filming "You Excite Me") and items such as bags and furniture were used to hide Rita's growing tummy.
Princess Yasmin, born in 1949 and her second/last child, looks just like her mother. Rebecca Welles was born in 1944 and looks more like her dad, Orson Welles. She and Rita had a falling out in the 1970s as Rebecca was always being bailed out by Rita for financial problems. The last time Rebecca saw Rita was in 1983, and she hadn't seen her mother in 7 years. Rita completely adored her daughters but her sheltered upbringing led her to do the same to her kids. Rebecca and Yasmin have never craved public attention since witnessing stressful situations the public would put their mother in - they wanted privacy.
Rebecca died in 2004 from cancer and Yasmin continues to further research Alzheimer's disease. Rita still had a bit of a tummy from her pregnancy and was tightly corseted into the "Mame" dress. Apparently, it felt like plastic and wasn't comfortable to move in. She did film this scene in two takes which is just astonishing. Sorry for the long reply 😅

This scene is kind of historic beyond its place in Hollywood noir legend. Glenn Ford's first sight of 'Gilda' also marks the beginning of possibly Tinseltown's longest running secret affair. They would make five pictures together and were 'friends with benefits', in between Rita's multiple marriages, until she began to lose her mind.
Ironic that Ford here plays a bisexual, seemingly the pet of George Macready. Ford was too hetero for his own good. His image was Mr Ordinary Outdoorsman, but in reality he was a compulsive romeo- c. 150 conquests recorded meticulously in his diaries, says his son and biographer Peter Ford. Rita, the #1 glamour girl of the mid-40s, was his biggest victory, though their affection endured.
Ford had only been back from the war for a year, starting life as a husband and father with Eleanor Powell, when 'Gilda' was cast. After his heroically forgiving and pious wife finally tired of his tomcatting and divorced him in 1959, he moved into a luxurious bachelor pad near his marital mansion on Cove Way in Beverly Hills. His new address was next to... Rita, who sold him the site. Eleanor and Peter could not afford to keep up the family home on the alimony squeezed from him (he was also cheap) and had to sell in the end.
Ford remained in Bev Hills until he declined- in body, not in mind like Hayworth- and had to have round-the-clock nursing care, bullied and looted by his nurses. What a fate for the two glittering stars of 'Gilda'! He deserved his karma more than she did hers.

They once had a shootin' up in the Klondike
    When they got Dan McGrew
Folks were putting the blame on
    The lady known as Lou
That's the story that went around
    But here's the real low-down
Put the blame on Mame, boys
    Put the blame on Mame
Mame did a dance called the hoochy-coo
That's the thing that slew McGrew
So you can put the blame on Mame, boys
    Put the blame on Mame

Hollywood also kept it a secret that '40s movie goddess Rita Hayworth didn't do her own singing. She may have been Fred Astaire's favorite dance partner, her singing voice was less than satisfactory. It was Nan Wynn who sang the standards "I'm Old-Fashioned" and "Long Ago and Far Away" in the films "You Were Never Lovelier" and "Cover Girl," and Anita Ellis who performed the hot "Put the Blame on Mame" for Hayworth in the box-office hit "Gilda."
