      Unfortunately I think the nature of shortening pre-existing content like this into a short is practically asking for misinterpretation. It’s not that the short is bad or something, but some people are… well, they’re beginning to have attention spans as shallow as the length of a TikTok. I guess that separates the people actually paying attention and not, though.

      Nothing past the first five seconds really rescues this video. The comments also fail to mention that such smooth run cycles were common in 2D games in that era. This was likely a product of the stigma against 2D and bias towards 3D, which would have led developers to try and imitate 3D's smoothness- The very thing that makes it seen as undesirable for games meant to be in an animated style today.
      Absolutely everyone just missed the pink elephant in the room.

    It's been a while, but I remember in a lot of older vampire novels, it was described that vampires don't really "walk" per se... Like, they definitely take steps to move around, but it looks more like they're gliding along the surface of the floor. Kinda like, they've perfected ground movement to the point that they don't really need to make any unnecessary movements in their upper body.
    That's how I always thought of it, anyway.

  • @BrymalDX
    @BrymalDX Před rokem +97

    I love his walk cycle. I've always considered it to be kinda half floaty and not exactly 100% firmly walking on ground. I always got that impression since when you start walking he kinda flies/floats forward a bit THEN starts doing the walk cycle

  • @AustinOnSugar

    I really appreciate this kind of thing where "Here's the parts that look unconventional" recognises that in a vacuum these would be poor choices, but given his Dhampiric nature, the hypersmooth motions bursting into snappy attacks turns out to fit Alucard better than something conventional would.

  • @Aisubun
    @Aisubun Před 9 měsíci +13

    The fun thing about saying Alucard's run cycle is like this because he's half vampire is that Soma's run cycle in Aria and Dawn of Sorrow is practically identical to Alucard's in terms of movement, basically being a subtle animation hint as to the big twist of Aria.

    It really stands out in Dawn of Sorrow when the Bad Ending unlocks Julius Mode. Since you get three different characters its really fun to compare their 3 movement styles.
    Julius is alot heavier in his movements.
    Yoko is slow and gentle unless she uses melee since shes a magic user.
    And Alucard feels even more vampiric and weightless in comparison because of the other two.

    To me, I think it's reflecting his heritage to Dracula. Dracula always has his movements convey a sense of unnatural power and smoothness, as if the laws of reality simply dont apply to him. Alucard's slick movement feels like a reduction of that effortlessness, as though the fact that he moves his feet along the ground is only a formality. He's not *as* powerful as his father, and yet something about the way it looks feels as though if Alucard broke into a dead sprint you wouldnt hear him at all. He's just *that* fluid and graceful. It's a really solid visual indicator of Alucard's nature as somewhat terse and distant despite his power, compared to his Belmont counterpart's stoic, almost dutiful march/strut. Despite the animations not really showing their face, you can tell with certainty that whatever Belmont has the face of a no nonsense ">:[" expression. "I am here to kill the supernatural and by god I will." Whereas with Alucard it conveys a near emotionless ":l" expression, as though the hordes of supernatural against him are a minor inconvenience, like a fly landing on your arm.
    It's really impressive just how much "language" in character design a movement cycle can deliver.

    I kinda like Alucards run animation because I’ve stared at it so long, but when I thought about Alucard being in smash as a playable character, I thought yeah they’d definitely have to tweak his run cycle a bit because it’d look a bit silly in 3d animation. So does the Belmonts walk animations in smash, but it works because it’s so iconic to the characters, it wouldn’t feel right if they didn’t have that overly manly walk animation. Alucard's run animation on the other hand could definitely use a change, and I don’t think people would mind.

    An important aspect of his run cycle that's absent here is the gliding animation that it beings with, before transitioning into the full run cycle. It gives this effortless, ethereal ballet quality to it. When you're moving through the game; stopping to fight enemies, jumping across platform, etc, you mostly move in short bursts, where this glide animation is what you see most of the time. It makes it feel like he's just skating and dancing between each action. The transition to this stiff, steady, determined walk cycle for long spaces becomes sort of special, because you need such a long stretch of area to even appreciate it.
