    I love them all but the 1086 is my favorite - they were new when I was working for IHC in the late 70s. Good size, power and balance - lots and lots were sold and some are still in use today.

    • @johnhalter7287
      @johnhalter7287 Před 2 lety +1

      The 86 was great but due to the pain in the ass poor visibility hooking up to implements I got to go with the 1066 over it. It would not have made my list but a very good tractor. In their time the M, 560 and 806 were top of the pile, even the Cub and A. The 1086 was not that far ahead of the competition as they were. Believe me I liked them once you got in the field except the ride on rough ground. The fuel tank in back moved the seat forward making the ride a lot more rough. The tank in back was a big mistake in my view but was much better for filling.

    856 is hard to beat, but the 5488 is like heaven and Imho the nicest looking tractor ever made. Head and shoulders above a 1586 but I liked it too. If you want parts for 88 series see Triple R Tractors and some beautiful pictures.

    International shot themselves in the foot with their late adoption of the three point hitch. Many farmers in my area had used the old M and H Farmalls for years, but had also started using Ford and Ferguson tractors for many chores, and had grown accustomed to the three point hitch.
    International pushed their 2 point Fasthitch, and most people simply didn't want it. People had plows, disks, mowers, and many other pieces of three point equipment. When their old utility tractors wore out, they didn't want to mess with something that didn't accept their implements.
    Allis Chalmers was never as popular as several other makes, but they made the matter even worse when they started building so many with their snap couple hitch. But this didn't have the impact that Internationals stubborn refusal to go with what people wanted. As a result, International utility tractors were virtually invisible on the small farms of America.
    AC, JD, Ford, Massey Ferguson, and countless others had the three point that everyone wanted. In my part of the country, fairly small farms are the norm, and utility tractors rule the landscape. And International simply didn't exist in the market as far as the farmers were concerned. I believe this was among the worst mistakes any machinery maker ever made.

    • @DrJohn493
      @DrJohn493 Před 11 měsíci

      Exactly why my folks switched from International (Farmalls) to Case for row crop farming. My dad used Case tractors, almost exclusively except for one JD 6040 that I really liked b/c it was the first tractor he bought with a cab and a/c. And a radio! When I got to drive the 6040 I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

    The 3588 was actually the most versatile (and popular) out of the 2+2s. The 7288 and 7488 were the coolest (in my opinion anyways lol), as there were only 19 and 16 of them made, respectively. Nothing against the list, I know its one people vote on, just thought I'd put it out there.

    Hey there crazy d, I think at least an honorable mention would be in order for the 4366. The first 4wd tractor Steiger produced for IH. The history of these tractors are quite unique, being IH was the company that actually kept steiger from going bankrupt! Steiger had a contract with IH to build around 300 of these units a year for 3 years. It was based on the cougar series frame with the IH 466 motor and IH front and rear ends. Yes people did bitch about axles failing, but if you actually pulled an implement that it was rated for instead of overloading it you didn't run into that issue! It was a great partnership for both companies at the time cause IH was trying to break into the articulated 4wd tractor scene at the time, and steiger was about ready to bankrupt out of that same scene! Great story of 2 companies that needed each other to keep on keeping on!!

    • @johnhalter7287
      @johnhalter7287 Před 2 lety

      I have run them my whole life and got to agree but the 826 with the German diesel beat it. They didn’t sell near as many but that engine was terrific. I have run 806’s Dynode at 150hp run in the field. I have one set at 130 never been apart. It was definitely my number 1, but the M, A and 560 definitely should have made it also. The greatest tractor IH ever made in its day was the M. 80 years old and I know many that have never been apart still working around the farm. The H would also make the list in its day.

  • @fohjimjohnson
    @fohjimjohnson Před 10 měsíci +1

    Not sure how a list like this doesn't have either the H or M. The H is the best selling model tractor of all time selling over 391,000 units. The M didn't sell quite as well, "only" 270,000 units. Between the 2 over 660,000. That is a lot of tractors. as someone that spent my growing up years driving an H every day there is a good reason it sold so well.

The roughest riding tractors ever. IH was the king of the tractor world with the 66 series - the 86 series was a mistake from which they’d never recover.

      You are a 100% right, the people voting are not voting for good dependable tractors of their day, the are voting for highly rare collectors tractors. The M and 806 should have been number 1and 2. The 1086 was a pain hooking up equipment and the ride because they move the seat forward was awful. The 1066 was way better.

    • @johnhalter7287
      @johnhalter7287 Před 2 lety +1

      I also agree the 86 series was a complete let down after the 66 series. Just plain stupid to move the tank to back blocking view and seat forward to make you feel every bump twice as hard as the 1066. The engineers should have been fired on those mistakes. Other than those Engineering problems the 1086 was a good tractor but because of them the 66 was lots better.
