    I was dead wrong about the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, and I’m here today to fess up. Through his first two seasons, I just didn’t see how he could turn into a viable NFL QB, and then 2022 happened. Hurts almost won MVP, he’s gotten the Eagles to the precipice of the Super Bowl, and ultimately, I was wrong. However, I still have some problems that still pop on his film, so today we dive into first where and why I was wrong, and then get to those trouble areas. This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze the Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts.

      We learned not to cap the eagles as a team, they will win sunday. And i cant see the cheifs losing to cincinatti 2 years in a row, they will go off and win a close one. If im right, then logic tells me that the eagles should beat the cheifs in a close superbowl, with the seperating factor being their Defense. ...but the cheifs are soo good this year, mahomes and andy fckin reid! Big star power on KC. Ill say the cheifs win the super bowl this february because they are the new patriots, and they will find a way to win, and theyll also will have the slight benefit of having the refs on their side ( since mahomes is the face of the nfl).

      @@Diloposaurus I don't think its that dumb. GMs get the QB position wrong every time and I have seen fans champion their 'home grown guy' when they aren't in a situation to do what they do best. Hell even fans get it wrong when its the QBs fault for 'losing a game' when the talent around them isn't enough help to get them over the big games in January. But it definitely takes a student of the game as a fan to admit being wrong about what you saw of the player before and to acknowledge their improvements on tape.

    As an eagles fan, I had my doubts on Jalen. This year is really a testament to the organization with great coaching and a great roster around Jalen. Exactly how teams should surround a young QB. His work ethic is clearly elite and I don't think many QBs in his position last year could have made a similar jump because of that. I do have to wonder how good he can be when on a big contract. The Eagles can't load up on as much talent around him but we're gonna find out. As always great video Alex.

      Everyone did he had a lot of problems and he developed this is what it's all about. Honestly I think Hurts will be fine on a big contract because of his mobility allowing for deficiencies in the O-Line but yeah it's something I think about a lot and I'm super interested in seeing if Brock Purdy is going to get a contract

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W Před rokem +4

      Depends really on the contract. Mahomes on his 10 yr deal is actually kinda cheap along with the production he puts up on a tier by himself. So the Chiefs can always scour FA on decent margins to add better talent if they can. Along with restructuring the deal if they need to free up money. If Hurts takes a long term deal himself, it may cut on his short term money but it will always give Howie enough ammo to make a splash in the FA/trades to get great/elite talent in the building.

    • @choosecarefully408
      @choosecarefully408 Před rokem +2

      There's a missing element here that I'm stunned everyone doesn't know about: how old is Hurts right now? About the same age as Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields & Brock Purdy, right? 23 is usually the year when our minds & bodies synch up.
      For *men,* anyway. _Before_ that, good luck telling ANY 22-year-old how to develop good habits now for your future.
      The problem with 3 out of those four is that they were thrust into situations where they _HAD TO_ develop _some habits_ in order to survive the oncoming 200+ lb defenders coming after them. So what do you get when you put a mind not yet capable of working through this pressure _into_ it? Panic that sets in & produces patterns of action it will repeat _next_ time.
      _Aside_ from the fact that the 49ers have the best o-line, everyone's noticed that Purdy doesn't panic. Yeah, well he didn't play at the NFL level last year.
      Look how much Aaron Rodgers benefited from sitting too long behind Brett Favre. Sure, he may have had the *physical* skills to throw the football. But to stay in the pocket? Not without panic.
      It's stupid putting in anyone under age 23 into being an NFL starting QB & I don't think we'll ever find any QB, great or not later that was good before age 23.
      We'll find _plenty_ who, *like* Hurts, still can't shake off _some_ of the bad habits they developed. Isn't that right, Zach Wilson? & I think that we'll find that the later they start, the better they tend to be. Rodgers was 25 before he got to start & *immediately* silenced all the haters. Peyton Manning was only 22 & had a _terrible_ rookie season. But he didn't retain any bad habits thank God.
      Coaching is huge. If it wasn't for Doug Pederson, Trevor Lawrence would not have shaken off _ANY_ of his old bad habits.
      But most coaches treat their QBs like plug & play devices they have to talk down to like children, then treat them in games as if they're Video Gama Avatars. If Hurts is repeating errors & the coaches can't straighten those out yet, it's likely because they're just doing the Every Bad Parent tactic of staring at them, refusing *to* stare at them & acknowledge the problem, or not trying to.

If you think of it too many teams settle to give big money to a Kirk Cousins/Dak Prescott/Carson Wentz and those guys struggle to go deeper in the playoffs when you can't get the talent right around them. Hurts not only deserves the big contract but its clear if he has the O-line and at least a receiver talent like an AJ Brown along with other guys like DeVonta Smith/Goedert, he's still going to help push the offense all the way. Leave it to Howie to put it together like trading a happy meal draft pick to the Titans so he could get Hurts an elite receiver teammate for him.

    Yeah its fair to say Hurts improvement and statistical result was on him as well as added marquee/elite talent like AJ Brown. Which allows Hurts to feature his prowess for the deep ball with AJ Brown/DeVonta Smith on 9 routes on the sideline after the run game starts to scare the defense. In similar fashion for the Niners how Brock Purdy stepped in after Jimmy G got hurt and their offense stays consistent because the talent around him is still too good. So you always need those elite guys to have the offense be a threat even when Hurts defaults to bad habits in the pocket. Also his break out is a good case scenario as the Eagles won't have to look at better QB prospects this season with their newfound draft capital (thanks to the Saints).

People talk about burrow and mahommes like Jalen is supposed to be punished for scoring with his legs in the red zone. Not his fault he can scoot.

      @t4d0W Před rokem

      His ability to run is a huge asset in a league where many defenses just default to playing braindead base nickel formations against everyone. Eagles is also one of the top teams in getting explosives in the ground game and consequently, made them threats to score in the red zone. So it was a matter of getting their pass offense to be as potent as their run offense in terms of explosives. Way I see it the staff optimized what they saw from Hurts last season and adding AJ Brown as a target made his deep ball game just as more consistent. So while the rest of the league tries to move downfield by attacking the middle of the field, the Eagles can do it running at various angles and just toss deep balls on the outside. And only they can do it that way because of the their O-line talent and Hurts' unique talent as a runner.

    You forgot to factor in how hard he works. I prayed last off-season Eagles didn't trade for Watson or Wilson and not give Hurts a chance. His first season as a starter was better then his numbers. Reagor dropped his completion % and didn't have experience at wr. Also first six games Eagles didn't play to their strengths. Didn't run the ball and forced the pass game . The BUCS game they went back to what they did earlier in season.

    You have to give the Eagles coaches a lot of credit. Last year they retooled their offense on the fly and crafted a running attack that took advantage of Hurts athleticism while simplifying his progressions often utilizing half field reads. Acquiring Brown put the finishing touches on a skill group that now has all the clubs in its bag. The Eagles have continued to make Hurts' progressions fairly basic which is something you can do with an array of pass catching talent that can win against every coverage and the best O line in the league. I am fascinated to see the Chess match with D'amico Ryan's who has very quickly established himself as one of the best coordinators in the league with his own spectacular array of talent to deploy.
    This is one of the best matchups we've seen in an NFC title game in awhile and will go a long way to cementing Hurts' legacy one way or the other.

    • @Bewbscueser
      @Bewbscueser Před rokem

      @@WhiteG60 I said Ryan's has very quickly established himself as one of the best coordinators in the league. I'd be shocked if he isn't offered a head coaching job this off-season.
      Last year the Niners were ravaged by injuries on D with the secondary in particular down to starting street free agents. As a first time coordinator he not only kept them afloat but had them a dropped pick away from the Superbowl. They are loaded on that side for sure but Ryans has in my opinion elevated them even further.
      I'm super excited for both matchups tomorrow!

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W Před rokem

      @@WhiteG60 Niners defense is loaded but its how Ryans coaches them that really stands out in big situations. As a group they communicate and tackle well which is important in playing zone heavy. But they can also change stuff a bit to play man and still carry out their gameplan consistently. Its one thing to have the talents but to get them be as consistent every week takes a good tactician.

    Everyone except Jalen was wrong about him. No one...(maybe his mom) who wasn't him thought he could make these leaps. Some said he would be better but,... he wasn't good before, so that's no stretch. But,...what he worked hiss ass off to become.. that is amazing! I didn't like him( as a our Q B ) after last year. He'll be the first to tell you he hasn't reached his ceiling yet and in the off-season I'm sure he's gonna work on it. Testament to organizational patience, coaching, building a scheme around your QB instead of dropping a QB into a scheme, and personal growth! I also look for the same with Daniel Jones with Dabol (if they truly extend him)!
    These are reasons I wanted my 49ers to NOT move up in the 2021 draft bc I knew it would result in Trey Lance or Justin Fields! I have always doubted Kyle’s ability to scheme around his QB and build off it vs here is the pre set scheme I think you are fit for.
    Which is why guys like Trey Lance, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Justin Fields, Jalen Hurts etc would never work in the Shanahan scheme! They require patience, understanding, and freedom within the offense that would drive HC/ OCs crazy!
