Why Lane Johnson lets pass rushers hit him first.

  • Lane Johnson actually lets pass rushers hit him before he tries to hit them, which is incredibly rare. Usually offensive lineman try to attack the defensive lineman first so they can’t get past them, but Johnson is so supremely talented, and has such refined technique, he is able to force them to show their cards, then shuts them down every single time. How does he do this down in down out with sustained success? This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film analyze Philadelphia Eagles Right Tackle Lane Johnson.

      I understand the face-value logic for Houston going back up to get Will Anderson, but I think it was a long-term detrimental move for them. Obviously not because of getting a freak like him, but because it's been shown again and again that getting your (young) QB a WR1 elevates them like nothing else. Allen got Diggs. Burrow got Chase. Hurts got Brown. Dak got Amari, then CeeDee. Hell even the Giants are trying to do that with Waller for DJ. The Bears just gave Fields Moore. Houston could have sat pretty and taken JSN (not even to mention JSN and Stroud already have major chemistry) at 12 instead of mortgaging the next two drafts to have an average offense (with a defensive HC), and another Chandler Jones (possibly great sack numbers but on crap teams). To me, going back up for Anderson was almost like hedging your bet on Stroud.

    He and Kelce were inexplicably underappreciated for a long time outside of Philly. Their opponents knew how great they were, but you rarely heard TV commentators or fans of other teams recognizing them.
    I think it's just tougher for the average fan, and commentator as well, to appreciate great OL play. There's so much going on each play, and our eyes mostly follow the ball. Still, it was always mildly annoying for me to hear different names thrown around, over the years, knowing damn well that Lane and Jason were superior. 🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅

    Im by no means a football x’s and o’s person, so without paying that much attention to the offensive line I have always assumed offensive linemen waited for the defensive lineman to make a move. That always made the most sense to me. If the purpose of the defensive rush is to be aggressive then your role, to balance that out, is to be passive and reactive like Lane is here. Especially because you aren’t as athletic as an NFL pass rusher…being aggressive, I would think, would see you either being ran right past because you’re not as quick footed, or would see you off balance and looking silly, as they convert speed to power…
    Basically what I’m trying to say is that the goal of the offensive line on pass plays isn’t to get a pancake, it’s to prevent pressure to the quarterback or a sack of the quarterback, so I just find it interesting that being passive and reactive like he is, is a notable and distinctive quality.

    Awesome stuff. The secret here seems to be...Lane is just more athletic than 99% of OTs. You touched on it briefly, usually it's been the fast strong athletic DEs against the slow fat guy OTs where the only advantage they have is arm length and mass. So the prevailing technique usually is to use that length, to get their arms on the DE first to contain them, then use that power/mass to overwhelm them. If they use speed the goal is to keep those arms on them and ride them upfield. DE technique evolves into anticipating the initial hands from the OT and learning counter moves to use the OT's reach against them. AKA when you know what's coming you can plan to counter it. And then OTs are trained to watch for and anticipate this handfighting and counter moves etc. But it's all predicated on the OTs making the first move.
    Lane is athletic enough that he throws that whole pass rush meta on its head. 99% of OTs fall into 2 categories. Huge behemoths with length/power but slow feet and their focus is that huge kick-step because they know they are weak against speed rushes so they compensate with those huge kicks. This leaves them open to inside counters, and they frequently get beat around the edge because they're just too slow. The others are athletic with good footspeed but they just don't have the power to stop good bullrushers. They can wall off the edge against speed, but anybody who can turn speed to power or just straight bullrush off the snap will give them fits.
    Lane is elite in both facets. That's the difference. He has that elite footspeed that he doesn't have to lead with huge kick steps off the snap, but he also has plenty of power to stop bullrushes. So because he doesn't have to lead with huge kick steps, he can wait for the DE to declare an outside speed rush before defending it. Knowing if they convert it to power he can still handle it without getting bowled over. 99% of OTs cannot get away with this because, as mentioned, if they get on their heels and give ground etc they get overwhelmed by speed-to-power.
    Throwing the DEs normal pass rush meta on its head and making "counterpunching" his primary technique is proving effective for a guy athletic enough to get away with it. And I would imagine this works against most all pass rushers he faces, because he's simply more athletic and mentally prepared they are. He lets them declare first and reacts with either speed or power to neutralize their first move. And by the time the DE reacts to that counter, you're already pushed 3-4 seconds and it's too late to get home anyway.
    What I would be interested in is seeing is how Lane fares when he plays strictly against those ELITE elite pass rushers, to see if this throws a wrench Lane's play. Garrett, Bosa, Watt etc. Watt didn't play when Philly played the Steelers last year, and Lane did give up 2 of his 11 pressures against SF. Still no sacks, but did Bosa give him more trouble on a per-snap basis than usual. And then how does Lane react over the course of those games to facing an elite rusher.
    Anyways, great stuff.

    • @theelike4302
      @theelike4302 Před rokem

      I hope we see someone develop something against it but I don't really see how defenders have any other option. They HAVE to get to the qb so if he doesn't hit first the def HAS to make that first move. Lane has such a strategic advantage on them just from how the game works that adding his elite athleticism on top is proving to be genuinely unbeatable. For now, at least.
