- Building a cruising sailboat
Something different this week. We deliver Hazel's new boat from Cowes on the Isle of Wight, England to Wilhelmshaven, Germany, sailing non-stop from Cowes to the German island of Norderney. After refueling there, we headed out on the final leg. We also transit the second-largest sea lock in the world and navigate our way under the Kaiser Wilhelm bridge on our way to our final destination.
A big thanks to Sally for her hard work and company on this voyage :-)

This is the story of my building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk-rigged, schooner dory. The boat is constructed of exterior quality plywood, sealed with epooxy and sheathed in glass fibre and epoxy. One of the great beauties of these boats is that the ballast keel is fitted towards the end of the build, enabling the boat to be kept lower in the shed for most of the construction time. The keel and rudder are fitted shortly before launch.
Thank you!
Tony
First boat, she is gorgeous, wat a lovely girl you must be very proud. A father and daughter trip like this is very few and far between, you must be very proud. Thanks for sharing xx
Thank you Simon 👍😀Yes indeed!
She can't stop smiling. And why should she? Congratulations Hazel. Fair winds
Indeed. Happy girl 😀👍
Congratulations and welcome to the junk rig community! I know that boat and she's lovely.
On behalf of Hazel, thank you. Yes, I was very impressed with the boat- she felt really good at sea and will make a comfy liveaboard for one or two people
Tammy norie
Hello ' .I've watched your video's over and over again! Read all of Mr. Benford books, and have fallen in love with the little Dorys . My discition to go with the junk rig was your Beautiful little video
Thanks.
I've seen them too, William. Nice videos 👍
Well this is marvellous. Thank you very much! And now I have all of SV Tapatya's boat building videos to watch and blog to read!
Your Hebridean wind vane videos are particularly interesting. I know Chris (Emmelene) has built one too and blogged about it. Very interesting!
Watching all my videos and reading my blog should take a while 😂😂😜
I'm an American retired Navy chief, and have made passage thru the Irish sea at least 6 times, and can't remember ever seeing it less than 2 meters. The fishermen were always fighting the swells and waves. That's a very nice looking boat. Should provide plenty of sailing fun. Regards, Solomon
Thanks Solomon. I'm sure you've seen some serious seas in your time.
Swells and waves - yes indeed. From different directions, as they often are. Those are the ones you really notice in a small boat ⛵️
Well done, all! I'll admit to being a little disappointed to not get a look below, but hopefully in the future Hazel will grace us all with a full tour of Alanouwoly.
Thanks Garryck. I’ll see that she does. It’ll be good when she’s had a couple of weeks to settle in to liveaboard mode on the boat 😃
@@SVTapatya - yes, I was thinking she'd want some time to get things ship-shape first. So liveaboard is the plan? Well then, more congratulations are in order, not only a boat owner, but a first home buyer too! Well done, Hazel!
That's the plan Garryck.
Epic voyage, good story. I bet you were pleased Hazel hadn't looked in the American Exchange and Mart though, ha, ha.
Thanks Dale 😂😂😂
Fantastic! This was so much more than a mere delivery passage. This video actually made me smile for half an hour, on a day when the (UK and world) headlines are full of ominous news. Bravo to all three of you. To paraphrase the lyrics of the new skipper herself, "a new day [has] begun." I wish I had had as much nous as Hazel when I was her age.
Thanks Chris. It was a really good passage. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Only time will tell what she does with the boat now, but she has some good intentions, that's for sure!
An excellent video, beautiful cinematic photography and great sailing. Well done all of the crew 👍🏻
Thank you Ray 😀👍
Wow i can smell the salt air ! God your so dame lucky ! Live Life . Thank you for letting me on the sea !
Thanks Mike 👍😀
Bravo! Good on ya Hazel.
Thanks Tim 👍
nice boat... nice Hiwatt shirt!
Thanks Jim
I’ve got the DR103 to match the shirt too 👍😃
SV Tapatya sweet!
Schöne Grüße aus wilhelmshaven
Danke Jan 👍😀
I've been binge " researching "all your writings and video's. Currently reading your article about the concrete boat . You sir have a ' stout heart ' as a former cement Mason, 30 odd yrs , my heart would have been stilled by the chipping away the wee few bits of loose material. You do indeed know pain..OUCH..
This vessel is a dream compared.
Great drive sir. Namaste
It’s all about adventure, William. The thing is, if nothing can go wrong, it’s not an adventure 😃
Great video. Thanks for that. The only thing I missed was a tour or some shots of the interior, and maybe the chance to get a bit of technical info about the junk rig. (For us sloop sailors).
Deliveries are my favourite kind of sailing. We bought ours in Holland, sailed it to Sweden by the Kiel kanal....
All the best, C
Thanks Carlos. We went on through the Kiel canal this year, too. Most enjoyable. I think there's a look down below in a later video. A talk about the junk sails is a good idea! Coming one day 😀😀👍
Congrats on the safe journey, looked forward to seeing Hazel's Boat and you guy's sailing her back. Note the sails are a junk sail configuration, much like svseekers future sails, very cool. Beautiful shot of Dover, closest I have ever been, well besides in movies but felt more like being right there watching your video. Best of luck in the future adventures. Thanks for the sail along !!
Thanks Barton. Yes indeed, junk sails 😀
Congratulations to Hazel what a great story. Sorry I’ve been absent for a bit, I’ve been busy with my own build (unfortunately not a boat 🚣♀️ but on my home 🏠 Glad to have caught up now and excited to see the progress 👍
Thanks Edward. Hope your build has gone well 👍
hi very nice boat
Thanks Greg 👍
Great job Hazel and crew!! Be sure to let us know when you start your own channel:)
Thanks Stew 👍😀
Nice ep.
I wich you all of luck with your new boat Hazel and my you allways have more than 3 ft water under the keel.
And one tip, get a sprayhood if you go liveaboard it is a usefull thing when ist raining.
Thanks Mike. The metalwork for the sprayhood can be seen taped to the stanchions. Good advice 👍
Very enjoyable thank you for sharing hope keep having fun with the boat
Thanks Rob 👍
Great video, enjoyed that. 👍
Thanks Derek 😃
Gday from Australia congrats to hazel on her boat just asking how do feel about the junk rig as i am a long time fan of sv seaker .
Hi Peter
I have sailed thousands of miles in junk rigged boats and am currently building one myself. I like them a lot. Down wind and on a reach they are excellent; upwind performance is similar to a gaff-rigged boat. They don't point as high as a Bermuda- rigged boat, but do sail to windward. They are cheap to rig and easy to maintain. They put far less strain on the boat than conventional rigs, and reeling sail is so easy that you can put in a reef and shake it out again as and when you feel like it. The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages
@@SVTapatya yep i have been following your build for a long time now very cool .
Thanks Peter 👍
Hi Guys, enjoyed the video. You pasted my home port Folkestone
Regards
Thanks Russell 👍😀
Great video. Maybe we you both in Denmark some day. Regards Torben
Thanks Torben. Denmark is a lovely cruising ground. I certainly intend to be there in the next few years. I'd be happy to meet up for a cold one 🍺
Nice daughter, nice boat, nice video, and I wish the best to you all. Question: should you have blessed the boat on your first voyage with some good wine your was that at dinner🙄
Thanks Mac. There are various boating rituals that people can chose to participate in if they feel so inclined.
Very nice you two! Congratulations! And you both look tanned and healthy (although the night watches took their toll as you mentionned) The white cliffs of Dover are always impressive, much history there, hats off salute... All in all, the boat looks quite safe from what you've shown us, perfect school for a young skipper, coastal navigation at least. And it got me thinking, with car motoring being so expensive in Europe, sailing just might be the best kept secret around, for those who don't care much for public transport, that and bicycling of course. Congratulations Hazel! I didn't get the boat's name, what is it?
Thanks Pierre. The boat is called 'Alanouwoly', which, at least, is an unusual name - not too many of them around!
Well... That's no Christian name! Kidding✌️😄
😂😂😂
Riddle of the Sands
Indeed!
@@SVTapatya Great channel. Its brilliant to share a common interest with your kids. You will have a family flotilla before long.
Thanks Sean. Yes, I'm pleased the kids are all interested - 2 at least are heading in a boaty direction. We'll see what comes of it all!
@@SVTapatya My two kids have no interest in by boating sickness. My daughter pays lip service to it but my son has zero interest. Luckily my partner is tolerant lol.
Hi Sean
A tolerant partner is probably the most important thing! The kids may come round with time.....
need some grease on the wheel bearings.
Yes Dave. It needs a drop of oil in a few places. All minor things though 👍
Nice video, what was the rope out the stern for ? or had somebody nicked the dinghy. Best wishes.
Thanks Stephen. It's a trailing log to measure speed and distance through the water 👍
Great sail. Would have like to see more detail of the boat, though. What class?
Thank you. She’s a Freedom 28, originally cat ketch. Built in Rhode Island, Designer is Garry Hoyt
@@SVTapatya Are these older classes of boat easy to convert to Junk rig? Mast seems to be stepped well forward?
@@asd67lkj Yes, particularly the Freedom cat ketch range are ideal for junk rig conversions. As you say, the masts are already in the correct locations. But actually, pretty much anything can be converted. There are a lot of projects discussed on the Junk Rig Association forum 👍😃
Herzlich Willkommen in Wilhelmshaven.
Nice boat, what kind is she and was she originally junk rigged?
Thanks Ed. She's a Freedom 28, originally rigged as a cat ketch. Designed by Gary Hoyt, built by Pearson on Rhode Island, USA
