Sailing vessel Tapatya
Hi, I'm Tony and this is the story of the build from scratch of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8 ft junk-rigged schooner sailing dory. The videos will trace the construction of this cruising sailboat from the first concepts through to the completion of the build. We'll show the methods of construction and the theory behind some of the choices of materials used, as the boat takes shape to become the home and travelling vessel that she will be.
On completion, the videos will continue to actually show how the vessel and various materials used perform, also recording the locations, wildlife and people we encounter as we travel in our newly-build small home.
This is an exciting journey, with much to look forward to. Please subscribe, follow, watch and see how we get on!

Avoiding The Orcas And Sailing In The Fog In Portugal - SV Tapatya S2 EP21
Sailing vessel Tapatya. Following the advice to avoid an orca interaction as we sail down the coast of Portugal. We encounter plenty of fog and show what it takes to get Tapatya ready to set off in the morning.
This is the story of SV Tapatya, a self-built, Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of our adventures as I live aboard, sail and strive to find out just what such a self-built, low-budget vessel is capable of.
These videos take a lot of time and effort to make, in what is already a time-intensive project. Your support in watching, subscribing and sharing these videos is very much appreciated. You make a real difference!!

Sailing Plans And Pushing On Towards Getting Her Back In The Water - SV Tapatya EP317
Nice episode Tony, thank you!
fire crackers
Despite the fog, lumpy seas and the Orca issue, it looks like you still had an enjoyable sail down the coast. Thank you for taking us along, Tony. See you nest week.
You are certainly making good progress down the coast. Running the Orca gauntlet is always a concern, some of the attacks on boats have been extremely persistent. They have also exposed the production boats fragility with the spade rudder and rudder tube and the latter has caused the sinkings. I have enjoyed following your progress on AIS.😉 Have fun.😀👍⛵️
There's a fair chance the fishing boats would leave the AIS off so they can fish with anonymity.
Yes, I think you’re probably right, Mark 👍
Nice if slightly scary sailing trip in the fog Tony. Hope the Orcas stay away. Tapatya goes good. Go well to the two of you
Thanks Rob 😃👍
Nice nice. The famous Orca Avoidance Protocols are working! If that fails, you'll have to smack em with the oar!
Thanks. Yes, so far, so good! 👍😃
😍😍😍👍👍👍👍
😃😃😃😃👍
How's it getting laid for a single guy
I think even orca will struggle to break your rudder, I've seen the damage to to some on other channels and in the news but they were typically foam cored modern stuff, I think you'll be ok, how's Hazels rudder, modern or older fashioned ?
Thanks Bruno. Hazel’s is a good solid piece of wood too; stern-hung. It’s certainly stronger than a modern production boat rudder 👍
A lot of fishing boats don't want their competitors knowing where the are going to catch
Yes, I’m sure it’s a very competitive business these days. And I have total respect for the people that do it!
Most fishing boats are equipped with AIS, but they selectively switch it off when they find good fishing grounds.
Well done dodging the Orca Tony, at least you’ve got a pretty solid rudder more than can be said for some of the plastic fantastics 😀.
Thanks Chris. So far, so good! 👍😃
Nice one.. and remember all dolphins are whales but not all whales are dolphins.. Orcas are dolphins.. 🙂
They are, R.E. And intelligent beasties! 👍😃
I love seeing dolphins!! They say if Orcas do make a visit, to turn off your motor. And they do attach and kill dolphins, too! I won't ever pay to see one again. (Sea World September 1986) Fair Winds! ✝️🙏❤️🇺🇸⛵️👣☘️🍍🤗😎
Yes, it’d be great to see an orca in the wild; just not here! 👍😃😃
As a young boy going to Sea World in San Diego and seeing people swimming and thinking they were training Orcas always worried me. Maybe they are retaliating now, just a thought. Great video Tony, sail on.
Maybe, Tom. Who knows? 👍😃😃
Congratulations on building such a beautiful boat, she looks to sail fantastic. I'm currently sailing solo around Australia and the fishing boats here never use AIS. Fair winds mate
Thanks Dave. Sounds like a great adventure, mate. All the best!
Tony great upload as usual, really enjoyed your routine to move off the pick.
Thank you kindly!
I've said it before I'll say it again... Father / daughter trip ...stellar! Goodonyas!
Thanks Scott ! 😃😃
"Haze up ahead"... in a boat, I hope😂
😂😂
Thanks Tony I’m living vicariously through your adventures!
Thank you Mick 😃😃
I think you have settled down into the leisurely cruising mode now. Life is good.😀👍⛵️
Well yes, Norman. Galicia is a wonderful cruising location; the west coast of Portugal is more a “get down there quickly and safely“ type of place 👍😃
Did you try any local brews or food or snacks?
considering who we're talking about, I'd say the chances are quite reasonable... especially with Hazel in the mix😂
Well, I can thoroughly recommend the “Asturias” restaurant in Viana do Castello, Roland. Filming would have been a big weird though! 👍
Is that the wildfire in the background?😢nice video again Tony, thanks for the trip loved it👍⛵️⛵️
Thanks Henk. Yes, there have been a few forest fires that we’ve seen in recent weeks. The local fire service seem well prepared to deal with them. Mostly they put them out within a couple of hours. They have sea planes that scoop up water and dump it on the fire. Impressive stuff. I did try to video some of the action, but it was all too distant for my puny cameras 🥺
Lovely journey and scenery. Go well Tony
Thank you Rob 😃
hi the boat is looking grate 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😄
Thanks Greg. All the best, mate!
Very nice adventure, you two pirates!
Thank you. This west coast of Portugal has its challenges but we’re enjoying it 😃😃
Have you decided on the wintering location yet.
We’re looking into somewhere on the Algarve, Tom.
Oh, I love Portugal!!! Wish I was with you!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Excellent !
Thank you 😃
Thank you, Tony, for the afternoon video. Just sat down for a snack and got to enjoy a lovely sail at the same time. Every country should have a month of festivals to make life so much more fun. Best wishes to you and Hazel for continued good cruising.
Thank you Matt. Much appreciated 😃😃
Thanks for the underlay tip and review Tony, do you have a brand name for it and happy sailing ahead!
Thank you. It’s this stuff; www.svb24.com/en/mattress-underlay-white.html SVB have a very helpful phone helpline if you need further info. I’m sorry I can’t actually remember the brandname 🤔🥺
@@SVTapatya Thanks, found it online! 🙂👍🏻
That’s good to hear, Bruce. All the best, mate!
A sailing friend and I discovered a product in the US that has ceased operation. It was almost the same as the material you showed in the video. It still works great on both our boats after 10 years. I.m told that a company in the UK is selling a similar product to yours by the roll.
That’s good to hear. The underlay I use is readily available in Europe 👍😃
So pleased you're not doing the advertising thing. Thank you.
Thank you Roger 👍😃😃
Danke!
Wow! Thank you Andrzej 😃
As the weeks and sea-miles go by, we can tell that Taptya has really become your home, Tony. It'a very enjoyable to watch. All my best to you and Hazel as you negotiate the Orca corridoor... take care of each other. Faire winds and enjoy the sunshine. - Chris
Thank you Chris. Yes, she feels like home now 😃😃 It’s where the heart is! 👍
There's this new product you put together like stick legos but made of plastic. At the joints are squares. Then there is a piece you clip into that. Well there all connected. You put your matress on top and it doesn't touch the boat surface. Of course that depends on how stiff your matress is. No, i dont know the name.❤❤
There are certainly different systems out there, Melinda. I dare say there are a few that work well. Thanks for sharing 👍😃😃
Do a video about Hazel's boat sometime! Looks like a production boat converted to junk ketch rig.
Hazel’s channel is here; czcams.com/video/zP6LB0rT7Dw/video.htmlsi=pY3kyI5F3CEaLKbe It is indeed a Freedom 28 with junk rig conversion 👍
How is your power consumption doing ?
All working perfectly, Graeme. That could be a good topic for a video 👍🤔
If you are going to south Portugal for winter, Nave Pegos (Bruce’s yard) in Faro is a good boatyard. Close to the city center, supermarkets and the airport. We let the boat there past winter before going up north.
Thank you. Good tip 👍😃😃
You could visit The Boat Rambler in Portugal.
Ok. I assume that’s a YT channel. I’ll have a look. Thanks 😃😃
Use the same underlay stuff and it seems to work fine
Good to hear, David 👍😃
You don't need umbrellas with daiquiris, they're like rocket fuel, you take off like Mary Poppins. ☂ If you've already decided that you want your reviews impartial and no two ways about it, that's cool. I'm in the camp I don't mind CZcamsrs getting free items and commission for reviewing items. Near enough all the channels I watch do a fair and impartial take on whatever product they are doing. Anyways, your channel, up to you Tony!
Fair enough, Alston 👍😃
Lovely video enjoyed your talk about the mattresses and mould very descriptive well done the scenery up the mountain was brilliant very hot by the look of it good luck to the future 😊😊
Thank you Kevin. Much appreciated 👍😃
Very nice Tony. T`is good you buddy boating with Hazel through lovely scenery. Stay safe Enjoy Go well ok
Thanks Rob 😃😃
Where do I get this material?
Most chandlers have it, John www.svb24.com/en/mattress-underlay-white.html
Thank you for the update, Tony. Those looked like delicious daiquiris. Best wishes for a great week of sailing ahead.
Thank you Matt. I’m up and getting ready for the next leg of this adventure. 😅
The Grand Adventure continues!!! Stay safe though, apparently it's gnarly in the Med.....
Thank you. It’s gnarly everywhere at times, I’m inclined to think 👍
hi grate i dear👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😄
Thanks Greg 😃😃
Moisture build-up underneath mattresses and seat cushions isn't restricted to boats. It manifests itself more quickly perhaps on boats, due to the marine environment and comparatively limited ventilation. That high-tech underlay looks like an excellent solution, thanks for sharing the tip. (I was one of those questioning the lack of vent holes in your bed base!)
Thanks JayGee 👍😃😃
