What I appreciate about people like Matty Matheson is how they have taken the mantle of Anthony Bourdain’s legacy of learning about food culture. Having the privilege to travel is what it is. However, it takes a curious and open mind to want to learn from the people you meet along those travels. I hope and pray that Matty’s career is long and prosperous because folks like me who can’t get outside right now are able to learn and enjoy along with him. Blessings to the folks at Munchies for this and other shows that open to world to us from our screens.

Aww made me cry. I miss dancing. I was excited for pow wow season this year. Made a new shawl for my regalia too. This covid mess is awful. I lost my brother in law and childhood friend. He led a drum. Now we can't dance for a year according to tradition. I miss the energy and being a part of something that keeps our culture alive. I feel my ancestors in every drumbeat and pride in every feather and bead I put on. I miss the beautiful Native girls with their perfect makeup. More beautiful than any model. And the handsome young men with their long braids and cocky demeanor. I miss the Indian tacos and frybread. I even miss the long lines to the frybread stand! I love how every grandma is your grandma and you are happy to stand in that long ass frybread line for her. Whether you know her or not. I especially miss the anticipation of getting ready for the pow wow. Making sure every tie is tight and part is straight. You can hear the drums way before you reach the parking lot. Rushing to get a good seat if you don't have one saved by your family. And then you step in that arena and show your stuff. You fill with pride. Yeah I miss all that. The closest I got to ceremony this year was keeping fire for my brother in law's spirit. It's been hard not being close to my family during these times. Thanks to Matty for trying to convey our beautiful culture in such a short segment. Migwich.

I love how the Native people treat their horses. That bay horse had a yearling and a newer foal with her, and they didn’t separate them for the ride, just let them come along like they should be able to. I can’t tell you how many English style mares I’ve seen spend all day in the ring with their foal still back at the stall, even before they’re weaned! A foal shouldn’t be separate from its mother even for an hour during those formative months, it can cause huge anxiety issues later in life and make the foal harder to handle and train. The way they’re doing it here is the right way, that yearling will be easy to saddle, she’s watched her mother do it for her entire life! And herd animals are like that. They watch and repeat. I wish more equestrians would learn things from the Native people, and from wild horses. Letting a horse raise its family like this in the natural way is the best way for both the animal and for us as humans who ride them.

Matty, much love, but this is probably one of my favorite videos that you've put out. Something about this land sings to me and seeing this makes it raw, I've been a punk and a metalhead, but something about native song changes the way I breathe, the way I feel, and the way I think. Thank you sir for putting this out there.
