I worked more than 20 years in brand marketing of FMCG companies, including major multinationals. Marketing communication is not more than 10% in BM's scope of work. I'd rather use the concept of Marketing Mix to illustrate what a BM does: Product (management of product range and NPD), Price (management of brand pricing and profitability), Sales Channels (development and coordination of brand initiatives in various channels with the Sales Department) and Communication.

I believe the role has evolved beyond traditional concepts... There are many aspects to a brand from customer service to brand culture to employee branding that are overlooked by the 4p's

I see a future where companies will eventually choose critical brand performance measures like distribution ( brick & mortar + online), bare bones communication like un-paid digital media for e.g twitter or on-pack and minimal promotional actions like wet sampling, Limited Edition Pack launches and events participation, to support their brands.

@@BrandMasterAcademy I work in the packaged food and beverage category. While critical focus remains for business to keep our neck above the waterline, it's not all doom and gloom. For instance we've held all TVC production and terrestrial airing spends, shifting them to generating online content and SEM (paid digital), which far cheaper than conventional media spend.
We've cut all customized research, simply because for e.g retail audit is giving misleading data on brand switching, when consumers grabbed whatever they could lay their hands on off shelves during the pandemic and its resulting supply chain disruptions.
Instead of the conventional heavy distribution & promotional spends on new launches, we are opting to partner with Amazon and Alibaba etc for direct to consumer delivery as well as new brand trails and conversion.
The bottom line is not for companies to wait for normal to return, but for recognizing new realities post covid and leveraging brands in new ways.

With the cost of Research ( Consumer, Trade, Product, Media, Brand Health tracking etc) going up, alongwith the cost of communicating the brand ( across online and offline, in-trade and OOH) going up, as well as the cost of brand Activation and Promotion (both ATL & BTL) going up, it has become an increasingly uphill battle for BMs to manage brand spends and stay in budget. Corners will be cut as a result and equity will suffer long term.
It's a pity that cut backs and savings in critical brand housekeeping, planning, Communications and promotion in the short term are being praised and justified at the cost of future brand salience and strength.

Hey man, hope you are a people person in the comment section and respond in an occasional manner.
I came to ask and see what a brand manager is, but I would also like to know what a brand manager is not.
If a brand manager works at a company that sells fictional books, there's multiple franchises/series of books made by the developers/writers.
I would like to ask, if a brand manager ran a fictional book company, does the Brand-Manager have full-control over the story/canon of these franchises/series of books?

    • @BrandMasterAcademy

Every writer-publisher relationship is different... Although the brand manager of penguin books wouldn't be involved in the writing of books... they would most certainly have a say in the type / stely of books they publish to ensure they stay on-brand

I am called a brand manager for one of my clients. I have a designer, a web developer, and a social media manager who are executing the strategy. The business I work for is small and I found myself lately being either asked to fill in other roles (write copy, create newsletters, come up with sales campaigns in 2 min over the phone) or only advise when there are no ideas of how to move forward. Basically, the owner doesn't want to invest in the role but he expects to get the answers and strategies to grow his brand. How can I explain that an answer doesn't come without research, analyzing, and coming up with a plan and that all of that takes time and of course resources?

    • @BrandMasterAcademy
      @BrandMasterAcademy  Před 3 lety +4

You need to draw a line in the sand Ioana.
Essentially, they want a branding and marketing department in a single person... A unicorn that doesn't exist and if they are playing that role (Like you) they're spread way too thin.
Define the roles you're prepared to play and the ones you're not.
When you need something outside your role, tell them we need to invest to move forward.
If they don't, you need to ask yourself about your long term relationship with them

Market research in regions like Africa can be challenging due to limited data availability. You might consider leveraging local insights, conducting direct surveys, or partnering with local firms to gather data.
Guerrillia research is also particularly useful where large data sets are unavailable.

The first step is to understand branding & brand strategy. (Plenty of videos on here and articles on the BMA website). The next step is to develop a strong understanding of marketing. The third step is to begin to offer the value you've built up in the knowledge you have to smaller brands to gain some experience or to find a junior position where you can apply your knowledge. From there your goal should be to continuously acquire more knowledge and experience in your area of expertise
